Installing some polish program that downloads 300 random files + some rather shady ones, to his harddrive doesn't really help him to understand what ioq3 cnq3 and so on, are.

That being said, I tried the program for the first time (since I'm formatting soon anyway) and it baffles me how a "program" that's basically just a simple downloader+unzipper can be +5mb.
You also lack an option box to unselect hack pk3 files (which the 3 additional files in the cpma dir are).
It also stopped at 94% with the message DONE!
It doesn't even make shortcuts to start the game, which would be newb friendly
Plus the irony of your chosen name for a newb help program isn't lost ;)

It's a nice enough effort, but it could have been done better and simpler. You could have done it purely in a browser. It would be much less suspicious.

PI 2.0 will be smaller and better but no some "browser shit" - i don't care if somone call this "random(virus,trojan,malware,spyware) polish(so it MUST BE SHIT) program" There are a lot problems, even with simple 1.32 instalation and PI solve many of them. If you don't see how problems newbie can have with 1.32 instalation, then spend one year with helping them with Q3 installation and you will discover a whole universe of simple problems.

About shortcut - nice to you that you discover this now. We have this in "to do" list from the begining.

I'm quite sure these files have never been published that way by the CPMA devs and should therefore not be included or named accordingly. A "Pro" installer should do exactly this, provide a clean minimum setup of what is needed to get started, and not additional content that bloats the install or even makes you unpure/possibly screws up things. If you want additional content, declare it as such and make it not a default option. Descriptions would be very helpful for each option that you can select, too.

Good idea and great to have people who try to help the community, but keep it clear and clean imo. :)

Ofc that Update Pack files was not relesed by Cpma devs, but it's call "Update Pack" for Cpma. Short story is: i myself discover how to give players a choice of using old simple items icons(as you see without even adding "opthionz") and when i post it at Cpma forums, ArQoN del my posts and say "You don't have clue about what you say" etc Now all players from that play on Polish Cpma servers can use old simple items icons and they are happy with that.

About minimum set: that is what community take as minimum. Cpma without popular vq3 maps is nothing wort becouse newbies must still seartch maps, dl them and they don't even know that maps go to baseq3. Anythhing that PI download is safe and if you don't know don't tell bullshit. Default options will be changed in PI 2.0 but that will be rather cosmetic changes.

I never undestand why there are so many haters/negative opinions on a tool that give Q3 second live (allong with ESWC) not only in Poland. Starting with ESR "unmajor" by some dumb idiot and delting posts in Cpma forums. Glad that information about PI is on stealm forums - it helps people wenether some haters hate it or not.

PRO Installer comes with the IDEA: Uniting all Q3 community on one mod with is ofc Cpma. In 2.0 version you won't see OSP mod ever. The main problem with PI isn't in PI but in Cpma. I spend a LOT time to convince for cosmetic changes for CA gameplay and nothing hapens until qrealka bring FR back. Lets hope that he also fix warmup command in CA and give "round restart" command with will allow CA players move to Cpma without losing anything. Hope ... Q3 community deserve more that only hope ...

about the names: it's hard to tell a difference in who was releasing what when one is called "Cpma + Mappack" and the other "Cpma Update Pack 1.1", you actually make it look both official and necessary that way (which both is not true at all for the later). if you want to stretch it somewhat further, aren't you haters as well when you do not accept the new simpleitems? destroying all the hard work vamp (or whoever made them again) put into it? how does that custom content help when the servers outside poland probably don't even support it?

Imo the tool could use a rewrite or plenty of modifications to make it both look more trustworthy and even more useful for people outside poland, too. State clearly who made what and what is essential/required or additional content, with a more detailed list of what is happening and being installed. Preferably make it open source so other coders might even help with it and people are less suspicious. I hate to say it, but some eastern european countries including poland don't have the most trustworthy reputation when it comes to hosting files/software. I'm not questioning your good intentions, but just be aware of it when you face dodgy comments about it. As the admin of Polish servers. They all want to help so they add this pk3 files without wheenig "omg not official haxored polis shit"

I don't wanted/ask Vamp to make those new icons, noone ask for them and if the people will only knew that this change is prepering, they will start flame wars as for "cg_altlighting case" Tthey was WRONG and bring back old LG is best example that even Cpma dev team make mistakes.

Also it is not me that make problem: why Cpma team just simply don't add "zzz_Old_SimpleItem_Icons.pk3" to Cpma ? It will give ALL players that PAID for old simple item icons a choise and solve all problems. Explain me the reason why they won't do it ?

Make it unchecked by default and rename "Cpma Update Pack 1.1" to "Optional Custom Files Pack" to show what it actually is.

Your stated goal with the installer is to help newbies with q3. It does not help newbies when their config gets broken on non-polish servers.

It is an "update" because it adds a choice witch somone take. So "Update Pack 1.1" for Cpma is the one change that i can do.

As for the broken cfg - ask admins if they will add those files. Don't ask me to remove them. Anyone can just delete files if they don't want to use it :-]

Any newbie that unknowingly uses cg_enemymodel anything/fb will get a broken cfg on non-polish servers, since that cvar value simply doesn't exist. It is NOT newbfriendly to expect a newbie to contact the serveradmin of every server and ask if he will add random polish files.

In case you don't get it: Remember the mess at quake4 launch where there were 3000 different versions of brightskins and you had to have 3000 different paks installed? That's basically what you're doing.

If they chose to set cg_enemymodel */fb they read readme and they know that this is only work on servers that have those files. Q4 case is diffrent becouse you must have those files to connect and in Q3 you don't.

"Update" has many connotations, but I'll keep it short.

An Update to a program indicates that it's released by the same people that made the original program. A better description of your files would be Addon.

Update indicates that it's required/recommended, which it is not. Again, Addon would be better.

"Custom Addon Pack 1.1" or similar.

ioq3 is an executable (.exe file) for q3. It's not that great and you should either use the original quake3.exe or cnq3.exe that has lots of improvements.

Basically all you need to play is an updated q3 and cpma 1.46. And then whatever maps you want to play. Maps go in /baseq3/ directory

Ok, one more question regarding cnq3. It seems like my mouse sens are not ok, although I use the same config as in quake3.exe, its like it`s less sensitive.
Is it some new code for mouse input, or is it something on my comp maybe :)
Btw, I also noticed the same thing in Quake Live. Its just not the same as in quake3.exe , so I decided to stick with quake3.exe for now :S

cnq3.exe DirectInput = 5.0

There is no dependancy on DirectInput version in both original quake3.exe and cnq3.exe.

cnq3 is ioq3, tho, and, iirc, ioq3 scrapped the windows code to use SDL, which has some small flaws in the mouse support. I repeat, I'm not entirely sure if ioq3 removed the windows code. You should know better than me.
P.S: True. I'm not a big fan of ioq3 cause they priorize the "most open source" over the best quality option.
P.S(2): The original quake3 exe does have directinput dependency, and as Al|en said, uses directinput 3.

We tried at Warsow moving to dinput version 8, but some guys reported the mouse didn't feel "right", so we are moving back to 3 for the next test. Also, at 8 it disables the control panel mouse accel (mouse pointer precission is it in english?) at opening a game, and if the game crashes it isn't enabled back. That shouldn't be so important for players, but it pisses me off for developing :P

Sounds like an example of resistance to change simply because its different.

If your testing confirms that DX3 is not disabling the pointer precision stuff but DX8 does, then IMO the DX8 version should be prefered, as it removes the built-in accel and removes the need for people to apply dodgy registry key hacks.

Just because there are people who've gotten used to broken behaviour shouldn't mean everyone else has to accept broken behaviour forever.

Well, the one it removes is the one you can remove in the control panel. If it was that easy players would never had a problem with disabling mouse accel in the first place. It feels exactly the same for me and other people, but some others report doesn't, and since I find no benefit with the change I'll try reverting for a test. If it solves everyone problems I'll keep it reverted, otherwise I'll change it back to 8.

I felt that I had to approximately halve my sensitivty to get it back to what it was in quake3.exe. It might've been just me though.
