the only useful application i know for r_customwidth/heigth is to force the engine to render stock resolutions not appearing in the game settings but supported by the gpu, i.e: 1080p in quake 3

r_customWidth and r_customHeight are changing the actual render resolution of fullscreen mode, they're there to let you set resolutions that your display actually supports that aren't in the preset standard list.

Setting it to arbitrary numbers that your display doesn't actually support isn't going to work, typically you'll get either a black screen, a small window over your desktop, or a GPU or display rescaled image back to something that the display can actually show.

If you want to set something very nonstandard, at the least you have to see if your GPU drivers will let you set it up as a custom resolution there first.

Hmm, there is no difference between r_mode 12 and the custom res 1024x768, for example. It either work or doesn't work.

What you could try, perhaps, is to create that custom res (1152x768) in your Nvidia control panel, then it might work in-game, but I've no idea if it is doable/easy/safe on a laptop tbh.

Please note that playing an fps game on laptops is not really recommended since you get an extra lag because of the latency between the display output and the output of the dedicated GPU chip (for example, Nvidia's optimus adds about 20-40ms) + the additional actual latency of the display panel used

Why would there may more latency for these steps than on a desktop?

Optimus renders the frame on the dedicated GPU and transfers it to the framebuffer of the Intel IGP, that adds latency. The guys at Valve and Oculus are trying to convince the industry to change this in the future, so we won't see this issue with next generation/dx12 configs.

Just use the 1366x768. The game always draws the same amount vertically and it cant be changed. So 768 = aspect of 3, meaning it will hit an exact aspect of 4 on the screens 1024 center pixels, with (1366 - 1024) = 342 pixels left over that it will place at each side of the 1024 pixels. (342 / 2) = 171 pixels more view on the side. In the center of the screen it will be EXACTLY the same as if you choose 1024x768.

Isn't this exactly the same as all the threads about trying to get 4:3 aspect on 1080p 16:9 screens. Where 9 goes into 3, so 4:3 is hit at an aspect of 12:9 and it just adds more to the edges, its exactly the same and fov is also exactly the same.

You are probably right. The thing is it's not about maintaining the exact same aspect ratio anymore for me, it's just that using the full 1366x768 is just a bit too wide for my liking.

why not 16:10?

Yeah, I'll try 1280x768 for a while and see how it goes.

Can't you use cg_viewsize for that? Or perhaps it will cut vertically too, I can't remember.
