How to make Quake popular (52 comments)
Posted by 24 @ 14:05 CDT, 6 September 2013 - iMsg
Let's admit it, Quake Live is never gonna get big. The fact that it is still alive, and maybe even growing a bit, is tremendous. There has been a lot of discussion about what features Quake 5 needs in order to become the next big FPS, but to be honest, in order to make it really popular I think we would need to sell out. Make the game dumber, easier. Basically like Shootmania or Call of Duty. But what would that achieve? Changing Quake so drastically it might become popular but it won't really be Quake anymore. Also, the scene would grow, but the average maturity of Quake players would descend. Do we really want a community like Call of Duty?

HOWEVER.

I thought of sure way to make the next Quake popular, while keeping from selling out. So there's this kid who plays Quake since like he's 3 years old, and his dad recently made a new video where he went online for the very first time at the age of 7 or something. Also, today I made a comment about IRC channels dying and new ones being created to which quake is potat replied: "the circle of life". This made me think. Quake community is growing old. It's gonna go extinct eventually. But there's a way to stop it from dying. Hell, we can even make it grow. What do we need to do?

HAVE MORE QUAKE BABIES.

Yes, that's right! If you have 1 child, you basically provide a replacement for you. If you have 2 children, you just made the scene grow! So guys. Throw all your condoms away, and get on baby-making! The more babies we have, the more players future Quakes will have! It's important though that you expose them to Quake at a very young age, and only to Quake. Also make sure to raise them right so they don't ever cheat! We can do this, guys. I believe in you!

Rising Stars 3? Who would you invite? (181 comments)
Posted by 24 @ 06:26 CST, 29 January 2013 - iMsg
So lately, lot of new prospects emerge on FACEIT Sunday cups streams, and I thought it would be interesting to see another instance of Rising Stars Challenge, but it's up to Memento_Mori and twister of course, and maybe donations to get some cash prize.

Anyway, imagine there was a Rising Stars 3 coming. Who would you invite?

Here are my eight nominees (revised after comments):

Italy rzd - 1959 Elo
United Kingdom Zoot - 1924 Elo
Russia brodyaga - 1912 Elo
Norway zeun_ - 1875 Elo
Sweden Slafz - 1839 Elo
Turkey Arronax - 1751 Elo
United Kingdom dopey69 - 1746 Elo
Ukraine ua_bpatela - 1716 Elo

Also considered: Finland rmplr (slightly lower elo), Hungary kHRIS (no duels in 50 days), Italy H41 (not sure if he's good enough yet or has enough determination to get better at duel)

Players with higher elo: Belarus Madball, Poland cOOw, Belarus slimk, France Sev3n, Russia 060718, Ukraine Xron

Other mentions in comments: Denmark sothis, Denmark Niyala, United Kingdom AllNamesGone, Austria T1E, Germany ffx, Slovenia CAREEM, Germany Frannatic, Russia fearzzz, Russia Latrommi

If A&D was the main competitive mod... (57 comments)
Posted by 24 @ 02:43 CST, 28 January 2013 - iMsg
...what would be your dreamteam?

I don't know what is the optimal teamsize for competitive Attack & Defend, since there is no such thing, but let's run with 4 now.

What are those abilities that can be used in A&D, and if there was a $100,000 A&D LAN tomorrow what lineup could possibly rise to the top?

My dreamteam would be:
Italy stermy
Italy H41
France winz
France aKm

I personally had the chance to play against aKm back in a while in the A&D sampler on Courtyard. He totally crushed everyone, and H41's CA experience would come in handy in the CA-style CTF gametype. I generally think stermy and winz would be top players in anything they invested time in.

Moreover, the team cohesion would be outstanding. stermy and H41 are brothers, winz and aKm are brothers. Stermy, winz and aKm play together in one team in Shootmania.

Is there any lineup that could stop them?

EU TDM clan recruiting members (Low) (31 comments)
Posted by 24 @ 01:40 CST, 17 November 2012 - iMsg
My clan, [?!] aka. utterly mad is looking for members in EU. We are a low-skilled TDM clan, but we accept players from any kind of skill level. What we are looking for:

- Currently out of our 8 members, 5 has Pro subscription, which means we gladly accept Standard players too, but Premium/Pro are favored.
- Must have TeamSpeak 3, as we regularly use it (no Mumble, sorry).
- Should use IRC. Our channel is #utterlymad.
- Must be somewhat active. (Unfortunatly, for me University duties mean I can't be on that frequently on weekdays, therefore if you have organizing skills it's a huge plus, so that you can organize practices for the team by yourself when I'm away).
- Must live in EU.
- We are a low skilled clan, however, if a player like l1nkin wanted to join I would not stop him. Still, it's more advisable to look for a stronger clan if you're mid or high, as we cannot provide the same practice level for you.

Currently we have 5 practice partners: ChillZero, zTn, druidz, sauer and brainwashed.

Current line-up:
Hungary 24 - leader
Netherlands Prophy - member
Hungary 7ep3s - member
Bulgaria Sn0W_CrasH - member
Belgium veRRo - member
Germany logiia - member
United Kingdom ZiriZ - member
United Kingdom DocPossible - member
Netherlands 005 - mascot

UPDATE: We no longer accept players as we are full.

UPDATE #2: Due to inactivity reasons, we once again open our gates before we enter any tournaments. With the help of this post I found 2 members still active to this day, and in the past 3 months we had many practices. Now, we want to take the next step by entering a tournament, but along the way 2 of our 8 members fell out, and it's rare that we get 4 on at the same time to be able to play. That's why I'm looking for 2 new members.

Real-life Quake museum (24 comments)
Posted by 24 @ 03:16 CDT, 30 October 2012 - iMsg
So I had this dream where I was in a Quake museum, and I thought it was a great idea, and if it existed I would definitely visit it. It had stuff like:

- Quake artwork (paintings, drawings, etc.)
- Built weapon models (even a steampunk railgun, which looked awesome)
- Videos of famous Quake moments on LCD screens
- Hall of Fame of quakers
- Player models as sculptures

It was truly unbelievable stuff. Of course, to build something like this would cost too much and it would never earn the money back. Still it's good to just fantasize about things like this once in a while.

Mouse with built-in timers? (28 comments)
Posted by 24 @ 07:03 CDT, 22 October 2012 - iMsg
I don't know if this topic was ever brought up, but I just thought about this.

What if, let's say, I made a mouse with built-in timers. Here's what I thought:
- 2 side buttons, red and blue color, when you pick up an item or hear a pickup you press the button accordingly (red=red, blue=mega).
- The mouse has 2 led light thing that lights up when an item is about to spawn in 10 seconds. So, 15 seconds after you pressed the red side button, the red light turns on. Also, a small beep warns you that the item is spawning soon.
- When it's down to 3 seconds the light starts flashing, and when it hits 0 seconds a louder beep warns you that the item has spawned.

This is just one idea, there could be different/easier solutions.

My questions: Has this ever been done? Has anyone thought about it? Would it be cheating?

How to get plusses on ESR (72 comments)
Posted by 24 @ 05:29 CDT, 17 October 2012 - iMsg
There are many ways to acquire plusses, I'm just gonna list a few.

- Contribute to the community
This one is both the easiest and hardest to do. It's easy, because there's nothing to it. You post news items, collumns, articles, movies, and so on. However, you have to be in a certain position to do most of these. For example, roychez being some communication guy for FACEIT gets to post everything related to it, same goes with ins and Adroits. What everyone can do is write collumns and post movies, but for this you need to be a good writer or a moviemaker, and also post stuff quite frequently.

- Have strong opinions
If you have strong opinions and express them through comments chances of it getting plussed is pretty high. Even if 75% of the people doesn't agree with you, the 25% will plus you because you represent their opinions. However, you have to be careful, because it only works as long as there are people who agree with you, otherwise you will just be labeled as a mentally ill person like CooloutAC or raythenoob.

- Be funny
This one may sound easy but it's actually one of the hardest ways. Firstly, because everyone thinks of themself as a funny guy. In reality, the number of actual funny people is really low, so the chances are that you're delusional about your own funniness. Secondly, you have to be CONSTANTLY funny, which is even harder. Stand-up comedians get paid to be constantly funny, because it's like a full-time job.

- Be a Quake-celebrity
If you are a celebrity, let's say, you're fazz, then there's an increased chance of getting plussed. The same post posted by some unknown guy and a celebrity would have a huge % difference. Take for example GUArd who has completely average posts and still rocks a 78% popularity. If he was an unknown player he'd receive about 1/4 of his current plusses.

- Be Memento_Mori
This is a subcategory of being a Quake-celebrity. If you reach the level of Memento_Mori you can basically post anything and it will get plussed. However, the amount of contribution to the community needed to reach this level is so high that so far only one person is known to have reached it. His name is Memento_Mori.

- Don't post un-plus-worthy stuff
If 75% of your posts are trash, people will see you as trash. To keep your prestige, you have to be careful what you post, and only post stuff that has a realistic chance of getting plussed. High prestige means people will not only plus you, but they will actually be thankful that they had the chance to plus you.

- Kiss some ass
Some moviemakers are so full of themselves that they will plus every positive comment about their movie. Finding these insecure people is like finding gold mines. You can milk their plusses for a long time with just a few nice words.

- Post half-naked Cooller pictures
Always works.

Reflux: a map every CTF tournament needs (18 comments)
Posted by 24 @ 11:12 CDT, 16 August 2012 - iMsg
This is going to be a personal opinion/discussion opener.

Why Reflux should be included in every future CTF tournament:

Reason one: It's gorgeous.
This is clearly not the most important reason as most streamers use picmip 16, which I'm totally fine with, although I agree that picmip 0 might be better to lure in outsiders. Nevertheless, this map is a true eyecandy, the graphics and the perfect color balance make it one of the best looking in Quake Live.

Reason two: It's a spectator pleaser.
The big blender or mixer surrounded by toxic waste causes a lot of funny moments for the viewers, and the instense action to get the Battle Suit is just awesome to watch. The caps themselves are pretty good looking too, flying through the blender in the middle of the map, and it's a tight map with not many caps on it so it's sure as hell exciting.

Reason three: It's highly competitive.
Some might argue that the funny moments caused by the blender and slime make this map more casual. I think it's the exact opposite: you not only have to fight the other team but the elements, too. Also, I think br1ck showed us on QuakeCon that this map can be played on a pretty high level. Plus, it's not easy to cap even with Battle Suit since you can easily get caught by 3 shafters, but the defenders also have to pay attention to avoid shafting the flag carrier towards his own base, because with BS it's pretty easy to get away that way.

Reason four: It's one of a kind.
I think it's pretty important for a 5-map tournament to have maps that have different profile, different playstyle. Reflux is the only CTF map with Battle Suit on it, and the blender is also pretty special. Therefore, I think you cannot not include Reflux.

For me, an ideal maplist would look like this:
- Reflux: Mid-size map with Battle Suit, toxic waste and a blender.
- Ironworks: Small, fast map with Regeneration in the middle.
- Japanese Castles: Mid-size map with 2 sets of random power up (Quad/Regen).
- Spider Crossings: Mid-size map with 2 sets of Regen and a random Quad/Speed in the middle.
- Troubled Waters: Mid-size map with no power ups and water.

Alternatives:
- Stonekeep or Shining Forces to replace Spider Crossings.
- Infinity to replace Troubled Waters or Ironworks.

Is Warsow the future? (140 comments)
Posted by 24 @ 21:54 CDT, 12 August 2012 - iMsg
I first met the game in 2007, when I tested three different full conversion Quake III Arena modifications: OpenArena, World of Padman, and Warsow. Out of these three, Warsow stood the farthest from its predecessor. I found playing it fun, but it wasn't convincing enough to stick around, and the player base was so small I was certain that this game had no future.

Four years passed with me being mostly away from the competitive gaming scene until, in 2012 I returned to Quake Live. It was my first week of playing when I heard that Warsow is still kicking and growing. I looked at some gameplay videos, but once again it failed to convince me, so I stayed away from the game. Since I started playing Quake Live, all I saw was players whining about Quake being dead, about id not caring/making bad decisions, and that we need a new game that will unite all the fast-paced FPS gamers and will become "The FPS". To all these comments there was that one guy who replied: “try Warsow”. Then two weeks ago, after seven years of development, Warsow 1.0 was released. We got a sweet new trailer, a handful of cups organized, even some small LAN, and a sudden growth in activity, so I thought it was time for me to give it a new try after all these years.

A lot of things changed since I’ve last seen the game. One big change is that the weak/strong ammo system was scrapped. I don’t remember it, so it’s very possible it was introduced after 2007, however, reading comments about it gives me the impression that it wasn’t a big success. This might actually be a good thing if this means the developers listen to the community. The graphics didn’t change a lot, except the cartoon gibs were replaced by some sort of Lego blocks falling out of the dead bodies (still not sure what to make of it), and that the player models now have a hunchback. Though competitively graphics might not matter, it is a big talking point as many say one main reason why Quake Live is not attracting huge masses are the 13-year-old graphics. Although Warsow looks pretty decent, it is even behind Quake Live graphics-wise. On the other hand, it’s highly customizable to the point that you can even change floor and wall colors, and the cartoonish setting can work as an excuse why the graphics are pretty minimalistic.

The game is completely free-to-play, and the website states it will always remain that way. I do believe that freeware games are the future, as you can see with the popularity of League of Legends; however, if you don’t have a huge player base it’s very hard to maintain a profitable freeware service.
It is not browser-based, but the game client works like a special browser (much like QLPrism), it has basically everything that a modern competitive FPS game needs including a news section, a demo viewer, a built-in IRC client, and even statistics if you register an account on Warsow.net. One good thing is that your in-game name can be different from your account name, and you can change your name in game anytime.

So far so good, but let’s talk about the game itself now. Many people say Quake Live doesn’t attract more people as a result of the skill gap. It is true that, as a beginner, it’s very hard to enjoy the game since there are so many aspects of the game you need to master besides the basic combat skills (aiming and dodging), which makes players overwhelmed and they leave to play easier games (like League of Legends). These things like timing, strafe jumping, or even config commands and HUD customization are hard to pick up for newcomers. Warsow does somewhat better in this aspect, as there is a competitive defrag gametype, where you can practice trickjumping. However, with the introduction of wall-jumping and dashing, the overall gameplay is heavily movement-based, even more so than Quake Live, that makes the skill gap even larger. In spite of this, wall-jumping is a great feature, something that in my eyes Warsow needs more of: originality. Unlike in Xonotic, the weapons are pretty much the same as in Quake III Arena, only slightly weakened, and with a different name/skin. The only problem with this is that it does not offer more than Quake Live, it’s just a slightly modified, slightly faster version of it, that has some needed features, but its player base feeds entirely on Quake players, unlike Shootmania, which draws players from a number of different games, including Quake Live and Counter-Strike. Still, for an indie game, I say Warsow is pretty impressive, and the only department where it does badly is the sound effects. That’s the only area where you can really feel the lack of money that went into the making of this game.

To close things up, I would say the developers did a very good job, my hats off to them, but it’s just not enough to become the future of FPS, nor to even succeed Quake Live. Despite this I urge everyone to give this game a shot, as it fully deserves it. It’s great fun, it grew a lot throughout the years, the movement with the wall-jumps feels awesome, and if you’re a sucker for cartoon-like graphics like me, you’ll love how this game looks. Although the player base is still very small, you can always find a couple of servers to jump into (even in locations like Japan). I know it wasn’t the last time I played it, even though I’m sticking with Quake Live for now.

To answer the main questions:
Does this game have a future? Definitely.
Is this game the future? I’m afraid not.
