So I went downtown this evening to have a look at the venue before the tournament begun. The whole thing is taking place at Gazi Technopolis, an renovated factory now used for exhibitions.
The actual building hosting the tournament is rather small with a two sets of tables, one for WC3 and one for Q3. Qualifiers for the WCG are also taking place in the same building.
The building also has a stage area where some of the matches will be shown on a big screen. I found out that the final will be played outside in an even bigger stage (don't worry weather is fine for outside) with an even bigger screen.
Quake 3 tournament computers feature old-school 19" NEC monitors whereas the WC3 pcs have huge widescreen TFTs.
The ESWC staff has pretty much taken care of everything as far as I can tell (gtv, website, live scores) so I guess we can expect a great show! That's all for now ttyl :D

Challenge Promode Arena is a modification for the id software Quake 3 Arena game. The concept behind Promode is the creation of a multiplayer deathmatch game that pushes its players to the max by removing any intentionally added elements that make the game easier, so as to appeal to the masses. It's like comparing a street car to a race car. You can race both but one of them is made specifically for the job.
Beginning with Quake 3 and adding the best ideas from Quake 1 and 2, Promode has reached a level of gameplay that has unrivalled balance and depth. In order to achieve this, a design team has been working on CPMA for nearly 8 years now, constantly tweaking and polishing the game.
To distinguish between Promode and ordinary Quake 3, the term CPM ruleset has been created. The CPM ruleset contains all the changes that make Promode a different game (for example, air-control and faster rockets) whereas the term VQ3 ruleset refers to the settings that the out-of-the-box Quake 3 uses.
In order to play Promode, you need a full Quake 3 installation, the CPMA client, the complete map pack and the ChallengeQ3 executable (with which you replace the original quake3.exe).
Terms: CPMA = Challenge Promode Arena, the mod that allows you to play Promode but also VQ3, Clan Arena, Freezetag, etc. CPM = The group of settings that define Promode gameplay VQ3 = Vanilla Quake 3, the group of settings that define id's Quake 3 gameplay CNQ3 = Challenge Quake 3, a custom Quake 3 executable which offers bug fixes and better performance

This is the second map of the first round matchup between campalot and figlets. The later had quite convincingly won the first map (q3wcp14) but it turns out winning their own map pick would be a far more difficult task.

Finalists of the Euro2005 Germany have managed to take the second place in group B, losing only to Spain. NBA superstar Dirk Nowitzki has been averaging 24.8 points per game so far. Nigeria have played some good games, even beating basketball superpower Serbia. Their players are not as technically profficient as the Germans but they are very athletic and strong in defence.

The first season of CAL Quake 3 CPM 1v1 blasts off with an exhibition match between Apheleon and griffin (aka DS|tom). Full GTV coverage and shoutcasting by iTG`SyN and maybe a cameo from wheat ;D
The second semi-final of the 2006 World Cup brings us the Portugal vs. France match. The ex-world champions played with confidence against Brazil and are looking forward to this game. Portugal on the other hand, struggled to beat England but see the return of 2 of their best players, Deco and Costinha. The tradition of France vs. Portugal matches heavily favors the Blue but Portugal, finalists of Euro2004, are good enough to trouble even the experienced French side.
In the first semi-final of the 2006 World Cup, hosts Germany are facing Italy, for the 29th time in the history of international football. The 'squadra azzuri' have won 13 times while vs. 7 for the Germans, but the hosts have been present in 7 Finals over the years and this time they have the home (and crowd) advantage.

Here we are, the WB Final of the CPM Masters Cup is a day away. Old-school vs. new-school, Finland vs. Poland, who wins? Rat, arguably the best CPMA player ever and dziku, one of the top players of the promode motherland, will battle for a place in the Grand Final of the cup that managed to bring the best of the old 1v1 stars out of their retirement.
Both players are good thinkers. Both players know how go on spawn fragging sprees. Both know how to avoid spawnraping. I expect dziku to play cautiously and utilize a lot of +back and rail. This would put any player in a difficult position as it's a hard style to counter. Any player but one ;D Rat's biggest advantage over his opponent is the many years of playing CPMA versus all kinds of players. This isn't the first time rat plays a hard opponent and he will most surely adapt to dziku's style. Rat over dziku 2:1.

The Masters Cup has delayed most of the other CPMA tournaments that take place in the same time period. One of them is the xG CTF Cup which continues today with the Winners Bracket final between the two favorites, noobs anonymous and Criogenix. It seems trippy returned just in time to give his predictions for this match. Having played na recently and being a cgx member in the past, he knows both teams well.
MaJunior: I think na have an edge here, seeing as their teamplay is very good. Cgx work well in defence with bomba and pejn, but in na all 4 players work very close together. trippy: Seeing that na have been a team since god knows when, it's no suprise that their teamplay is above standard, but only their defence. NA attackers are going to have a lot of trouble versus the pole hacks of bomba and pejn and with the flair and style of fluid and tmp it's going to be messy. MaJunior: What maps do you think they will pick? trippy: NA will take wcp9 without a doubt, if they thought about it for a few minutes they should take cp1 because that is by far cgx's worst map. As for cgx it's a straight forward cpmctf2. Just thank god mass can't choose a random q3wcp52beta map and ruin the league. MaJunior: NA have very strong defence on wcp9 but cgx will be playing RA/bottom RL defence (top/bottom) so it won't be easy for their attacker. How will cgx's FCs cross mid though? Any ideas on that? trippy: It's going to be a strange game on cp9 as both teams seem to be playing this tactic of one camping upper cross and one camping lower ya and both teams with amazing rail. The only difference being that na attackers seem to backtrack and help at mid a lot, I can't see many flags going past mid against na not unless fluid and tmp get some lucky deflags. MaJunior: I also dont see tmp working very well with flu1d and they're going to need their attackers to work closely if the want to cross that mid :X trippy: I thought that about tmp and fluid too but i've seen them play alongside each other recently and they do seem to work together. I think with all the pickups they play people get the wrong conclusions on those two, they do have the intelligence to play as a team, but can they out aim the enemy is the problem. trippy: NA have a strange setup in their team that might mess things up, all the players are individually great and work well as a team, but this is CTF and i don't think they are all that great for this mode unless they play mass who is the only true na ctf'er. MaJunior: NA TDM mid a lot with both their defence and offence, so maybe the two cgx attackers can use the often empty enemy base to restock and wait for their defence push mid. Sounds like something complicated though. trippy: Haha, maybe too complicated. All it's going to take is bomba and pejn's aim to be on top form and i think cgx could find this quite easy. NA play TDM in CTF and it's going to be their flaw now that they are playing a good team.
MaJunior: CPMCTF2 is hard map for the defence, because they only get a few seconds to catch their breath before the next wave of attackers comes. Na are also strong railers, which is crucial for PU attacks in mid. trippy: This map is awful, it's been awful from day1 when ninemil created it. The only people who truly like this map are the ones who have no idea how to play cpmctf and just love to run around. I don't think the PU is that great on this map, with fast deflaggers like tmp and fluid not even zerox and koddy will stop them everytime. MaJunior: Do you think they will put a defender in mid? Some teams play with both defenders in or at least very close to base' trippy: As we know cgx will have bomba in mid, so this is going to be a must for na. NA tend to play 3 att on this map for the first 5minutes to take the lead then slow up their whole style so you will most likely see two NA players in mid one in def and one attacking after 5minutes and every PU will go to na like usual (whores). MaJunior: I don't believe zrx can stop flu1d and tmp alone so I guess there will be heavy TDMing in mid again trippy: NA is all tdm, fluid and tmp won't be stopped on this map, they are by far the fastest cappers on cpmctf2 with the exception of fac ofcourse. MaJunior: That's true, but I'm not sure whether they can take this versus a team whose attackers are very often just an extention of their defence. I think at least one of the cgx attackers must help in mid as often as possible and both during PU attacks trippy: NA are a hard team to play against, because you are playing against a team of 4 defence. But with a map like cpmctf2 it's pretty easy to get past even 4, especially with nearly every spawn being back in base makes mid interceptions hard at times. CGX need to push 3 att when they take the PU because all of NA will go defence vs a PU. MaJunior: Hehe OSP style? :D trippy: They are the reason why "+back" and "all rail" comments come into play.
trippy: If cgx keep themselves together and stop shouting kurwa on ts2, they could take this 2:1. But if all goes wrong and pejn starts to sing 2:0 to na, the end result lies on the CPMCTF2. MaJunior: I think cgx are close but not quite there. NA are very defensive and they have the ping advantage. I do trust CGX will stop the na attackers but i'm not sure about how good their defence and offence can work together, I think 2:0 for na trippy: ban MaJunior: :)

After Wednesday's amazing games, we continue this Sunday with more action from the Losers Bracket. Roboty superstar zoom faces American legend apheleon while the flying Dutchman of CPMA (cause the original is reppie :D) Vo0, will duke it out with the hallelujah dueller koddy in a crazy aggressive match (cross your fingers for cpm3a this time!)
Apheleon managed to upset pl1 in the last match and steal the victory on cpm22 by playing a smarter and more controlled game. Zoom played the exact opposite vs. dziku; aggressive and fast, Power of Speed style. Dziku played his usual +back though and seeing as zoom wasn't patient enough to slow down in the critical moments, he ended up in the LB. I think zoom will have to rethink his game because aph may have the ping disadvantage but he's the thinking type so focusing on speed/aim alone won't help. Zoom to win 2:1.
In the match with rat, koddy's nerves let him down. He couldn't think clearly which cost him the start on cpm22. Cpm1a is also known as the rat-map so there wasn't much he could do there anyway. Vo0's style fits koddy much better; aggressive, less item hunting etc but again Vo0 has much more experience, especially under pressure. Vo0's map repertoire is more new-school than rat's so koddy won't have an advantage should he go for his best maps, cpm3a, cpm24 or 22; Vo0 is very good on all of them. Predictions are very hard at this point but I think Vo0 has the edge and will take it 2:0.
