How's that possible, I mean after all that you've accomplished? Anyway, the worst that has happened to me is losing my TV and PC privelages, sometimes to such an extent that I had to pack my small TV into its box (yes, with tape and all) and put it in a room far away from mine. Nothing too harsh I guess.

I've always done what they wanted me to, yet it doesn't matter; it seems like I can't please them whether I do what they want or not. (well, the latter just pisses them off more :p )

i dont have that problem i got my own house \o
but i have kids so i guess i can give a parents view... i dont have any problem with my kids being on the pc/playing games aslong as they have done their homework etc .... but i dont think i would b very happy if one of them dropped out of education to persue a "career" in gaming unless it opened doors into other things (like fat for example) but thats very rare

I was thinking about this, at the end of the day people have a lot of views on pro gaming, but if you bring home some money at the end it’s hard for people to criticize.

But I think people today have grown up with computers, maybe it’s harder for some people who maybe have never played games to understand, But a lot has changed, and to be honest with probably over $2 million in prizes in 2006, some parents might change their mind about it being a waste of time.

But its still possible to work/run a company, or study at the same time, Pro gaming isn’t a guaranteed money maker unless your in the top 3 or 4 in the world,although it will probably keep growing, and who knows what we'll see in 10 years.

And as far as playing for fun, well it’s a hobby, better than many people who watch TV non stop, more social, more brainpower!. Personally I play for fun, but I enjoy competing and going to lans, ect, and the possible prize money and travel is a nice bonus.

When are you gonna get your act together & start playing some Unreal again? non of the old Void players seem to be playing anything bar WoW anymore :-(

if you think about it, lots of things that you don't know of might seem scary and you might just blow it off and talk crappy crap about it.

anyways - try to explain WHY it's fun - oftenly parents get the idea that games is all about killing, which they are not (atleast to me, for me it's about competing and winning, killing is just the tool to win).

I don't know your parents but explaining that it's very important to you and you really care about the scene and all the things that come WITH gaming might help, make them watch some GIGA.DE-show or something.. i havn't had this problem but i think this might help in other areas.

mmm thinking about it what would they rather u do go out getting drunk and doing the drugs thing or b at home safe infront of ur pc and the occassional LAN, visiting places u might not otherwise have the chance to visit and coming home with money

The fuck? How can your parents still not support you after you won 15 000$ playing Q3? I mean, take the giant check, write "most people don't make this much in a year" on it in big red letters and hang it in your living room.

one of my 20th birthday presents from my mum was an Insomnia LAN ticket, neither parent had an issue with gaming so long as it didn't infringe on school/college/work

build a shrine of your oversized cheque and surround it with lit candles and place it in their room for when they go to bed.. :P

and my mum ohh well.. she hates gaming/computer/internet..

I told my mum about Ms Quakecon, she thought it was a pretty cool idea and that i should have gone to compete in it too (and win the prize money) :D

The only time she was really bothered by me and gaming was when i used to stay up all night playing Quake and then sleep all thru the day, no job etc... But now i've got a job i can't do that anymore :P Now she isn't bothered by it, and always asks how matches go etc :P

I suck at most games yet my parents keep telling me to play more, i dont think they like me ;(

Heh, my parents really haven't been too supportive, but they haven't been all that discouraging either. My mom couldn't watch me play if she tried (she gets motion sickness watching the screen) so she doesn't understand it. My Dad on the other hand lives in his own little world where if it doesn't interest him, then he acts like he denies it's existance. I've tried to start conversations with him about e-sports in general and he'll be all like "yea? whatever..." or just not say anything at all. The only time my Dad ever showed a hint of interest was when I was playing in the Q3 1v1 tourney at Qcon '04. After the event he was sort of disapointed that I didn't win any prize money.

About the only support for gaming that I do actually get, with the exception of some clanmates and whatnot, is a friend of mine who is just barely getting into playing q3 online.
