I watched Ghost in the Shell 2 recently. I had NO idea what was going on, even with english subtitles.

The "culture-gap" is so huge.. the characters speak in riddle's 80% of the movie. Lots of methaphore's that we don't know of in Europe.

Chances are you were watching it with the crappy subs. Plus the fact that a lot of it is based on the previous movie or the manga, so no wonder if it's a bit hard to keep track at times. Anime usually isn't like that. I've had little to no trouble with things like that :)

Yes. There are some references to the first GitS movie, but not SAC. You should see the first GitS first, or you might find yourself quite lost.

The thing that i sometimes have problems with is that they talk faster then that the subtitles can keep up with. So when im halfway the subtitle is jump over to the next sentence, so i miss out a sentence sometimes while watching -_-

Yeah. He's right. You really should at least see the first movie before the sequel :) But in GitS 2 Innocence there is alot of references to various bibel texts and stuff by old philosophers as well.

I've only seen it ripped since it's not released here yet. But I want it in english and not japanese just like the series is being released now with both english and japanese audiotracks. The first was released with both as well, but only 2channels in japanese, but is rereleased now ith japanes in 5.1 also. I don't feel I loose any of the feeling with an english audiotrack so it's ok by me ;)

Waiting for the DVD to be released here :) I have the old one, but not sure if I'm gonna buy the new release or not. You should see the series also (GitS Stand Alone Complex). It's pretty good, but only 4 episodes are released in the new series. The old is only released in Japan I think. Only japanese audiotracks on it at least.

I can't really stand anime, but GitS rule =) Be sure to see both movies (GitS, GitS 2 Innocence) and the series (GitS Stand Alone Complex). All are very good =) but the first movie is the best if you're just gonna check it out. The series is a bit different, so you might just like that or the movies.

Akira (the one that made Anime BIG in the western lands)
Ghost in the shell (fascinating)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (very complicated,but at the same time very addictive ;)

Akira rocks. Usually I'm roflmao about "Anime" but Akira really rocks. Tough story, and the official japanese soundtrack is fucking great!

You should check out Ghost in the Shell (Part one and two).

They are to separate movies, not parts of one big story (unlike Kill Bill vol. 1 and 2) even though you should see the first first ;)

i tend to agree, but i'll be honest, i was very confused after watching the second one... it almost made no sense at all to me. i guess watching it a second time would resolve alot of questions but i cba, i'm not fanboy enough to watch it two times :)

I have seen both now today. First watched the first one, then the second one as u guys suggested :))

The first one was nice idd, and i kinda hoped they wud continu on the story in the second one. But the second one was just 2 confusing. I had no idea what the story was about, and there were hardly any references to the first movie. Altho the "major" had a short appearance in the end of it.

Overall i only liked the first movie =D, but image quality of the second one was better (i liked the bit darker style of it), but wasn't enuff to beat the first one imo :>

I've only seen it with english translated subs that seem to be translated by the ripper. He also explained some of the references so one understands where what is being said is from when they use quotes from the bibel and other literatur.

Yep i had that too with the second movie. The first movie was english spoken, which didn't sound very good imo. Japanese sounds better imo for a anime ^^

I have no problem with english audio. I want it to be honest. I liked the english better than the japanes, but I'm no big fan of the anime I've seen, except for the GitS stuff. Which is why I like the new release of the GitS SAC 1st GIG (thx sai ;) series where there is both languages and both have 5.1 sound.

Ye im searching for DVD releases of Anime now too. So far iv found Full Metal Alchemist DVD. But still searching for more DVD's.
I think I prefer Japanese audio. I haven't seen many Anime yet till now, but it somehow feels nice to listen to the original audio then to the english audio. At least I had that feeling with GitS

:) I think it has to do with the fact that I don't really like anime much. It's just that GitS hit the spot perfectly with me :) The characters (though cyborg for the most part) are realistic if you get what I mean. I can't stand the ones with the big eyes, weird faces etc.. I just can't get past it, so I'm sure it's a loss considering the actual stories I miss out on, but I can live with it =) Maybe I'll change and will enjoy it at a later time.

Ohh...i liked that alot in Elfen Lied, the big eyes and all ^^. Makes it more enjoyable for me to watch it :)

Not that many that get hooked on anime like dubs to english. You lose too much of the japanese touch by doing that. The first GITS movie is one of the few that are as good in english as in japanese.

If you wanna check out the difference between japanese original sound and english dub (mostly american btw) then try Berserk. Gatsu sounds so increadibly gay in the english version I wanna cry whenever I think about it whereas he has a very dark, masculine voice in the japanese audio. FMA was also a disappointment not to mention One Piece which is also being butchered visually by those doing the translation to english.

Maybe it has something to do with the movie/series budget. I guess GitS has a big budget it being rereleased with improved picture and sound and aditional audiotracks.

Could be. But 4Kids butchering One Piece visually (for example giving Sanji a lollipop instead of his usual cigarette) doesn't have anything to do with budget but poor understanding of anime from the companies.

COWBOY BEBOP is the last anime you'll see, after that, it'll all seem like second class :) Akira rules supreme, innit, but cowboy bebop with the movie and its 26 episodes is like the meaning of life condensed into one anime. watch it!

I can't understand that you don't mention Hajime no Ippo! =D But for the rest of them I'm totally with you.
And as you mention, Berserk is not worth watching unless you have the intention of reading the manga too. The manga-version might be the best I've ever read!

Haven't actually watched that one as it's become increasingly hard to find the truly great stuff in the ever increasing fansubbing of anime that's currently airing in Japanese TV. I'll check it out.

What do you mean GitS Stand Alone Complex 1 & 2? There are at least twelve episodes, and in some interviews in the first box of the new releases they said they were gonna make like 24 episodes or something. And there are only 4 episodes in the first box, so that would make at least 6 boxes, and only one is released as of now.

GITS:SAC has two series. The first one is called 1st GIG and the second one is amazingly enough called 2nd GIG.

1st GIG is 26 episodes and 2nd GIG is still running in Japan to my knowledge.

Oh. Didn't know that :) I just the first box of the first SAC, and I'm eagerly awaiting the second. Wish they had put more than 4 episodes in each box though :/

What's the movie with the machines that have a targeting system designed to hit an opponent when they're moving, but when u run straight into them, they can hit? It's an old anime movie from like 8 years or so ago. The machine/s strike with some metallic tentacle (sorry for the crap explanation)

Watch 'Judge', and maybe devil-man, UND 'Metropolis' old skool film, 'the professional golgo'!!

Wacky/fun stuff:

Excel Saga - this anime is probably the weirdest ever produced. basically it's satire of all the popular anime genres along with the most popular anime tricks/clichés and some western movies are also involved

The Irresponsible Captain Taylor - lazy ass who gets to be a captain on a starship during a war. is he just increadibly lucky and dumb or is he a pure genius in disguise?

Great Teacher Onizuka - Former gangleader of one of Tokoy's most feared motorcykle gangs takes up teaching. It's a close call between wacky and just plain old humor but I'd rather place it in wacky because there is a lot of wacky stuff in this anime.

Spirited Away - Japan's answer to Alice in Wonderland (not the horribly butchered and cutiefied Disney version).

Vandread 1&2 - Men and women living on different planets and attacking each other. A ship of female pirates and a few male prisoners travelling home after an accident that flung them out into the far reaches of the galaxy. Mix of wacky/fun stuff and a serious background story.

The Slayers 1,2&3: Old anime that still and well truly rocks. 1st season is hilarious, 2nd season you break your ribs laughing and 3rd season struck on a serious tone so you even feel sorry for the villains sometimes.

If you're into the cyberpunk genre, I recommend Serial Experiments Lain.

I was really pissed when they stopped airing it in France and I had only seen a few... and when they aired it again I noticed too late.. again ! arrr

Its very nice if u like alot of blood. Especially in the beginning is pretty bloodshedding. And with all the violance its mixed with a love story aswell :)

A mercenary outfit in a medevial world that sends large tremors throughout the kingdom by their sheer success. The manga is much more but they wisely decided to cut down on the anime in order to be able to produce something you could watch and then be done with. The main characters are:
Gatsu - Raised by mercenaries and has only known fighting his entire life
Griffitsu - Charismatic leader, sword-fighting genius, military genius, political genius, leads the Band Of The Hawk
Casca - The only chick in BOTH, second in command
Corkus - Whiny officer that hates Gatsu
Pippin - Large, silent officer. The heavy hitter with a deep mind
Judeau - Good at talking, good at most things actually, master of none, any person of the female gender tends to sigh heavily when they think about Judeau
Rickert - Small boy serving in BOTH

Should you watch the anime (which I recommend before reading the manga) I'd actully advise you to wait with the 1st episode until the end. The 1st episode is actually the end and some ppl just can't take that.

Lots of gore, lots of fighting, political intruiges, dark story.

Not really. It has to do with how the manga was made. Personally I don't have a problem with how they did things but some think Berserk stink because of that and don't give it a chance.

Actually, the animé doesn't have any "real" end. They just stopped producing it. Why they put that episode first in the animé is because it´s one of the first episodes in the manga too. So, to be honest, there arn't any real reason to watch the anime as the story never comes to an end, it just stops (which sucks btw). The only reason I can think of to watch the animé is that you "fall in love" with Gatsu, he truly is one of the best characters ever made in an animé. =)

i've said it before and say it again. Elfen Lied is the most crappiest anime ever. It has no plot, and the little plot that's there is wank. The animation is just so bad. the fights are awful and the blood is just.. nooo. Animation where a limb gets cut off is laughable. This show is only for ppl who likes porn, why? cuz it's 90% fan service. I mean, in every ep koutas cousin keeps coming in to koutas room when he's either touching nyuu's breast or undressing her... i can't believe ppl actually liked this, it's just a fucking piece of junk.

I dunno what eps you have been looking then. Sure there are the eps where those things u describe happen, but its not that much and the focus isn't on those things either. If you just look past those stuff its not bad. I can't understand why u say its for ppl who likes porn. Ever seen the uncensord DragonBall Z eps? there u get ur fair amount of 'sex' moments aswell. Maybe it looks like its more in Elfen Lied, cos its only 13 eps.

Have u watched the full 13 episodes or did u just stop half way?, cos the plot gets better along the way, where they are building out the characters and you get a better idea of what happend to the characters in the past, which makes the story a bit deeper.

But its your opinion and this is mine, so no h8 intended :). IMO Elfen Lied is a nice Anime. But then again, i haven't seen much other Anime besides it (thus far only GitS 1 and 2). But i liked Elfen Lied more then GitS 1 and 2 tbh.

obviously i have seen every ep. dbz? oh please... just don't give me any reference to dbz and naruto, it's killing me. never saw gits sac 2 cuz 1gig was so slow and booooring.

anidb gave it the best drama of 2003, don't miss out tokyotosho.com... kind of my largest source. and for dvd releases i kind of stick with baka-updates.com, they don't post torrents for those cuz of legal reasons though, but i know my ways to get what i want >.<
