In response to requests from the community that the CPL reconsider the Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT2k4) mode to be employed in the Cyberathlete Extreme World Championships, the CPL announced today that it has changed format from 5 versus 5 Onslaught to 4 versus 4 Team Deathmatch.
At the request of league president, Angel Munoz, an internal committee was formed to discuss the potential of the Team Deathmatch (TDM) mode over the Onslaught mode and it was unanimously decided that TDM would be more appropriate for professional tournament play. Some of the factors in favor of the TDM mode included the mode's extensive competitive history, its widespread international interest, the availability of more tournament-appropriate maps, and broader spectator appeal.
Due to this change, tournament rules are being revised and will be released soon. Registration for the 32 team UT2k4 tournament, however, will remain open, with the switch to TDM mode effective immediately.
