obviously the fascist national bolshevist movement has taken on a life of it's own now, but it was grown and nurtured under sites like 4chan and 8chan. sites that either didn't take it seriously, or tacitly supported it, like 4chan under christopher poole and later hiroyuki nishimura.

a lot of the shitty memes like "cuck", triple parentheses, "it's okay to be white", alt-right, global jewish conspiracy, "socialism for white people", anti-interracial relationships, "stacies and chads", hitler did nothing wrong, holohoax etc were either created or spread by 4chan. what they would do is start a thread asking for users to go to a certain tweet or facebook post or youtube, with thousands of users to comment and retweet or like/upvote each other's comments. and just like you can take over a reddit thread with 20 dedicated users, you can easily spread this fascist propaganda with this method. and it took away the taboo of being fascist or just general crazy when other people see that their conspiracy theories and fascist propaganda is shared by many others.

in hindsight it was really shocking how much of 4chan and 8chan was really just white supremacy, child pornography, gore, ddosing, doxxing and just shitty humor. they really tried to sell it in the early days of the internet as this amazing experiment, but it was always just anons using it to hurt people. and what's shocking about m00t is that not only was he openly allowing this, but he's seen as some visionary when all he did was copy another site (2channel). hell he even got a job at google for google maps.

Oh I completely agree, I just think the people in part outsourcing all the work of moderation to bots, and in larger part just willfully turning a blind eye to far-right propaganda on their platforms because too many people are in part or significantly sympathetic to them and they bring the money... is way more significant. We know how Zuck and some other major social network owners react when this stuff is brought up to them, their reaction is akin to a streamer being told their stream is receiving bot views.

Does it mean this is the "truth" about community? Let me put it another way: truly unmoderated, voluntary communities are left with most obnoxious and thick-skinned people, who are willing to deal with others like themselves. All the rest either leave or try to put some moderation in place.
It may not apply to everything in the universe, but I feel it does to internet communities that are truly voluntary - be it game servers or political forums.

I actually started playing a bit q3 since the coronavirus thing. It's exactly as I wrote - servers without administration are awful, organised communities are great. I don't mean only a "central authority" type of administration - grassroots organisation is fine too, even better because more ppl actually care about their community not getting taken over by toxic people.

I'm just speaking from user perspective, not moderator. I know what communities I like and I know what I don't (eg toxic cheaters in online games). How to get to what I like is a hard task. I know for sure one way to get to what I don't like - remove all moderation so that nice people leave. And that was my only point.

I've experienced extremely few cheaters playing vq3 and cpm for 15 years and, besides them, I've never had the thought, let alone desire, to have behavior be enforced.

Same, because these few that behave in unacceptable way get quickly banned. Letting them run loose (eg obvious cheaters) is extremely demoralizing and destructive to the whole community - ie ppl try to get them banned and if impossible, leave or start cheating themselves. I've seen it happen, this is my experience, and if yours is not we won't find any understanding. Same with other types of toxic behaviour - this is why it's called toxic.
