I think it's because the game hasn't had that great exposure yet, and some potential new players prematurely gave up on it due to lack of features. There's still hope in Steam, but throwing that kind of money on it in beta stage is incredibly dumb.

Dota was beyond broken during International 1 with 1.6M prizepool. Way more broken than this. It's not that much of a problem to throw this money, it may be big in esports but marketing wise it's not insane. What they did with the money is secured the top oldschool quakers, got the attention from newschool and will surely gather more attention before Quakecon. I don't know how you guys expect tens of thousands of people to turn up to qualifiers for a game which has no social media presence, no huge playerbase in the previous game, with the last good Quake having been released at 1999. They're not Blizzard or Valve.

Assuming the beta is long and fixes all these and they continue making such tournaments, this first million will pay off. Give them time.

You're right about Valve, but Valve has a history of making good decisions and some questionable ones. id hasn't made a single good decision this century (if you can think of a few let us know) so it is kind of hard to see them looking long term.

For the longest time deathmatch FPS got disproportionate viewer numbers too. Hell, look at how much LoL gets. Barely anything compared to the playerbase. QWC, being a new game with no proper promotion except for the prizepool, likely gets more proportion-wise.

LoL's last year's finals had 14.7m peak concurrent viewership and 43m unique viewers, with a 100m monthly playerbase. Four out of ten players watching is a fantastic proportion, so the opposite of what you wrote.

There's nothing available on the number of players, not even enough for us to speculate well. Could be 1k, 10k, 100k, 1m, 10m; we just don't know. At most we could take a wild guess of QC not having 1m, because the MM times are really long and non-duel matches are rarely actually skill matched, but we cannot say QC has more or less players than the amount of viewers.

The viewership info is what is known, which can be found below. In sum, the QC tournament stream got 6,984 peak viewers ever, with daily peaks of about 3.8k viewers, and including all streams (rapha, carnage, etc.) QC is on 94th place of the most watched games on Twitch.

The only thing that tells us is QC is not attracting casual viewers from other games, because those numbers are nothing in comparison to what even very much unpopular games get.

To compare it to QC in this current stage is a bit much isn't it? The social media presence, being the biggest esport thus attracting more attention from nonplayers and previous players upon hearing about tournaments, being the social game where everyone knows LoL players, so often has more familiarity than with other games they don't know... This is all a big advantage.

Drawing any conclusions about QC other than "it isn't a smashing streaming success upon release in deep beta without any proper marketing" is much. This just isn't the stage to have proper conclusions.

Although people tend to fixate on twitch viewers it isn't really a good way to evaluate how popular something is.
In all honesty QC has more viewers than players atm, can you say that about other games? OW has 30 million players and 1+ million concurrent, but 20k viewers on twitch on average.
Atm there is an offline qualifier for Overwatch world cup in Shanghai, players from across the globe in a country of 1,3 billion people playing a game with 30+ million players and only 70k are watching twitch - daed game?

A few weeks ago a QC streamer said something along the lines of "there are probably more QC players than QL players nowdays" and the peak for QL on that days was 700+. Hence one might assume that there is at least 1000 QC players, maybe more now. As the stream yesterday had over 6000 viewers, as someone pointed out here and I saw myself, and on average there have been 3-4k watching the qualifiers one could perhaps argue that there are more spectators for QC than there are players.

The 20k viewers for OW has been seen on the twitch page for months and the 70k was a few minutes before I wrote the original post.

Well that's what I was pointing out - twitch viewers is not a reflection of how many people are playing something.
While Dota 2, CS:GO and LoL somewhat have hit close to or a bit over 1 million twitch viewers no other games has.
TF2 has 60k players atm and it has had 50k to 100k concurrent for who knows how many years, but I doubt twitch viewership has hit 1k, even the biggest yearly tournaments have a few hundred people watching.
The Smite and whatever else 1 million dollar tournaments have been around 10-20k if that.

Well, look at the proportion of LoL viewership, it's very small, and this with Riot having put in lots of effort into it. Even more so, I believe TF2 was huge in terms of playernumbers for the longest time, had absurd brackets in leagues with no prizemoney (like 1K TEAMS), but never had the prizemoney, LANs or viewership. The interest in these things is very disproportionate. Seems somewhat likely Overwatch is in a similar bracket to TF2, although the times are slightly different.

I believe Carmac once said that the reason they had games on IEM was the absurd WoW viewership numbers, CS had huge participation, legacy and viewernumbers, while QL and WC3 had very disproportionate viewer numbers for the size of the game. Something along those lines; I remember the QL and WC3 lines most distinctly. Tried to find where he said it again several times, but was never able to. Could have been video.

Outside of devs, there probably isn't anyone that knows the numbers that are playing QC. When id is pushing this as the next big esport game (in their mind), having a few thousand viewers during a part of a big tourney in a game that been in the public eye for only few months now is sad.

And I find it hard to believe the drop off in interest in the game is due solely to technical issues. Just like all the bullshit they did to QL to try and hook new players in, people thought the retarded shit they're doing with QC was going to bring in the players.

ppl indeed dropped it, because of long waiting times, terrible performance and the worst netcode on the history of fps games. I have friends on QC with accounts at the same level for ages, which it could be because they created a 2nd account, but most likely they just dropped the game. Even though I was a huge fun, I am most probably dropping it too (will still spec though). In EU I encounter about 1 player with ping above 60 at a frequency of once per week. My guess is that most duelers with ping above 60 dropped the game, after being raped game after game, iterated when nothing was registering. In NA might be better, since most ppl don't have good pings (so it is more fair). It kind of reminds me of the old q3 days, before CPMA, where even 10-20 ping difference mattered a lot and ppl where negotiating for minor ping advantages... it is terrible... back to stone age

I agree on the player models - I think one of the best things they could do to improve the game would be to rework the player models so that there are only bright skin options - including the vanity accessories. You cold still have the broad variety of model elements but just in bright versions only of green (obviously), yellow, red, blue, white, orange etc. and of course with the ability to mix it all up... At least like that all the players would be visible - it would bring the game alive for both the players and the spectators, and anyway it's kinda necessary for it's e-sports credentials.

In addition I think some of the models themselves and their animations could be improved - they look a little cheap and cheesy. Sorlag in particular just looks like her model has just been cut out and pasted in from some magazine or something - just not very 2017 all this :(

Yes. They make it kinda difficult though, cannot open too much scrollback at once. The main way to do that is to have a bot.

But you can just search using their search up top right. It notes the options in the dropdown thingy.

I tried the esl page, it's a piece of crap and doesn't work on my pad at all. something like eventhubs.com (fighting games) would be needed. in the case of csgo it has reddit where all the results are quickly posted. Right now there's really no other way for me to keep track of results than watching streams over many hours and sometimes different time zones, which I rarely have time or opportunity to do. it's just pathetic tbh and can not be taken seriously as an esport.
