Game isn't very balanced competitively, but goes for both teams and there seems to be a lot of money incoming from Blizzard towards it.
What they think of it is that it's better than sticking with Quake or any other FPS for now :D

It will be atleast for 3-4 years from now... blizzard will put a lot of money into it and as it's from them it will be picked in a lot of lans across the board... there is a reason why most of the quake pros that desire competition are now playing it. I love quake, but I am not blinded from that. :)

Also, I think its quite ok if you can have cross atlantic tournaments. And they have added higher tickrate servers possiblity(which makes it hard to play with high ping, its bugged atm though but they are working on it)

They are making it too difficult on themselves if they are coding stuff per ability though... I hope that they just 'say that' as examples rather than coding it. They should just learn how to code from reading Carmack's Q3 code.

I didn't quite follow what they are doing with projectiles though... But it seemed as though they were saying that projectiles are unlagged?
Which should mean that the guy getting shot will see them appear infront of the opponent? (Or projectiles traveling at different speeds at the start than at the end of their trajectory).
That would make rocketjumping a big no no in OW which is a shame (you can't influence your own movement with weapons nicely unless there is a fair amount of time/margin in there (for instance 'placing a jumppad with a gun')).

And well we all know my opinion about unlagged crap.... But as long as they don't have a strong constant fire gun which has knockback it'll be ok I guess.

Everything is unlagged, with certain ability and line of sight exceptions. Its pretty weird, but feels pretty ok still.

Using weapons to change your movement does indeed feel weird due to this. However as I said before, it also means the game is playable cross atlantic on high level which is also very nice. I don't know if it outweighs having really solid netcode on semi low ping though. But its clear that in blizzards eyes it certainly does.

If they have programmed it all sanely (which I'm fairly sure they can) then the netcode influence will fade away really quickly when the pings drop.
Writing netcode such that high ping remains playable doesn't mean that low ping should turn to shit. High ping vs low ping can turn into shit for either player (depending on the choices you make), but low ping vs low ping should be unaffected. (only certain buffers would influence that but it should be less than 25ms delay)

I guess the closest thing we've got is QL because what I am advocating is already in QL but it's set up wrong. More generally however what I'm advocating is mainly that unlagged with a weapon like the LG is always a bad idea.
(where the LG means a strong constant damage instant hit weapon, which in QL even has knockback which makes it even worse. The main points however is the powerful constant instnat hit damage.)

If Overwatch doesn't have these kind of weapons then obviously you can chose different kinds of trade-offs.

You can even write a game which contains more gradual movement changes (like for instance most racing games have) for which you can develop insanely great feeling netcode (as prediction gets easier to do with gradual changes, so you can trust prediction much more than in games like quake).

What I wanted was an interpolation on the client of extrapolated states (either by the server or by the client, both should be ok... The server might be more reliable overall but has some downsides to it as well, it's a complex trade-off).
Like a smoothed out QL which has timenudge= -(ping/2 + x). Where x depends on framerate + tickrate of the server (typically a number within the 10 - 20ms range).
And QL actually can do this... It's like... 10 minutes of coding for a patch and you're pretty much there. Or you can go onto a low ping server, set the values yourself and play against another swede who does the same.

Overwatch is basically Dirtybomb which in a nutshell is Return to Castle Wolfenstein / Enemy Territory in regards to team based objectives but more colourful, fresh looking and with added abilities aka "classes"

Fun to play, horse shit to watch imho, unless they have amazing casters, really really amazing casters.

Its only like Dirty Bomb insofar as the classes / objective focus.

The actual gameplay is really different. I find overwatch to be really slow and chokepoint based whereas Dirty Bomb is much more focused on gunplay with faster movement.

Overwatch hasn't grabbed me at all so far, only a few hours play admittedly but thats usually enough for a game to get me interested. The movement speed is snail paced, it often takes ages to walk to where the action is (unless you have that 1 character that creates a portal) and then the action is more often than not like those CA games on DM20 where one team is on bridge and the other is in the LG room and everyone just spams the doorways until someone goes Leeroy Jenkins are you're forced to engage. Then its over.

I think its probably just not for me. :/

Quake Fortress, I love the name. OW leaves me cold though. Looks childish and the whole structure of lots of different characters with "strong personalities" is just a TF2 knock-off.

The "20 tickrate" which people are complaining about is actually updaterate, and afaik it was adjusted back to 60 after the open beta.

I've never played it but spectator-wise it's on CA level. There is just no story to it, ppl running around and shooting. I guess that's the problem with watching round-based games in general. Maybe it will get better when casters catch up with meta game, somehow I doubt it though.

It's awful to watch and i vomit everytime i see it on stream. Then i played open beta and was shocked how smooth, fun, addicting it was. Still hate it on streams tho.

It's not likely to get better. It's not a spectator friendly game, way too much stuff going on at one time. It is fun to play, but to watch it is pretty uhhhhh.

I watching some grand finals for almost 3 hours.

Why the 6 player format? It's sometimes so incomprehensible that the casters themselves go free cam to make sense of what the fuck is going on. Reminds me of LoL teamfights, often there's just some blur of effects and spam while some tool caster is shouting every ability in the game in effort to provide context to seemingly nonsensical gameplay. Talking about spam, it's just ridiculous, it seems most of the game revolves around timed pushes around choke points that get spammed down, there are maps which are better in this regard, but for most of the time it's that blunt. The strategy of teams seem to revolve mostly around "let's take position, we jump in 3, 2, 1 we do this shit" (LoL fights), then when everyone has spammed their abilities the caster notices the one player with the last ultimate being used "WOW look at that bastion tank mode, 4 kills! 5 kills!" It's kind of.. meh.

There are also good things about the game, like the synergy of classes and an evolving meta with counter picking and so on, the gameplay is adaptive and dynamic in that regard.

Overall, it's not bad enough to die in 2 months, and entertaining enough for something to happen, but I somehow doubt the longevity of the game.

OW is a great game, super well designed and fun to play with mates.

that said, i dont think it will have lasting appeal when it has genre fundamentals that are so weak and lifeless. im talking about the combat and movement for the most part. they are so lifeless.

Just like Activision noobed up CS to make the retard "accessibility" version called COD, Activision makes the retard version of TF2 for the masses.

I used to think TF2 was the noobed up version of TF Classic but obviously it wasn't retarded enough.

Overwatch obviously copied some elements from TF2 but it plays very different since its more of a Moba in first person perspective rather than a shooter with moba elements
