you may be trolling, but I think that if new Unreal Tournament can be made by the community, so could new Quake.

but it's a vast task, not something even a large group of people could do in their spare time. and we could never agree on the engine, features etc.

I'm pretty sure Epic is making the new Unreal Tournament.

There still should be core dev team, otherwise nothing will be done. Game design decisions should NOT be crowdsourced but instead should be taken by a committee of a few respected game designers who also happen to be advanced quake players (czm comes to mind for example). And the whole enterprise could be supported on Patreon.

But eventually, I believe we could see the return of multiplayer Quake in a few years, around 2020, most probably as a big VR eSports installment. VR can revitalize deathmatch scene, especially with improved control schemes. Even now it's possible to utilize HTC Vive controls for cool advanced movement, albeit not traditional bunny hopping and circle strafing.

You really can't do any fast gameplay in VR... at least not with a lot of turning etc... It doesn't work.
It would do wounders for Doom3 / rage / far cry etc though. (the slower paced games which are more about atmosphere)

I don't think it's a question of how good the devices get... It's probable that how better they get how more difficult it will be for people to do fast gameplay on VR.

I love the "[IDEA]" you added in the title, just in case we thought that dizzle was producing the new Quake title and relying on ESR for help.
