yes, you will get rated after one match, so when balancing, you will get appropriate position in team. however, it's expected to know basic positioning on maps.

It's deeply saddening that we are still using IRC pickup channels in 2015. Obviously id is not going to add matchmaking but this isn't really an excuse.

Every other popular FPS has community-created web based lobbies and pickups, i.e. TF2Center, TF2Stadium, Popflash, even a simple unused one like csgolobbies.com. The QL steam update makes it possible to make a simple service like this, yet all we still have are crappy pickup IRC channels.

So much (actually little, if we're being honest) effort is spent making IRC channels for things like stats, dedicated server info, and pickups (the new pickup channels won't be used longer than their opening weekend) but none is spent developing real architecture that could extend this game's competitive life. Everyone always goes for the quick and lazy IRC fix instead of rolling up our sleeves and making a real web service that is accessible to FAR more people.The sad state of reality is that relatively few people, even including freenode, use IRC in 2015. This can be seen by tons of serious organizations and developers moving over to Slack. No new players are loading up an IRC client to play in your pickup channel, but those same new players would join your lobby site posted on reddit and instantly be able to find pickups in an easy manner.

For the love of god, can we pause or even stop the useless development of things like server bots and stats (stats are funny, right now 5 different people working on 5 different things that will probably never see the light of day) and start working on an easy to use matchmaking or web lobby system for this game. I know there are plenty of web developers in this community who have the talent to easily throw something like this together in less than a month's time. Just imagine if the talented developers working on minobot, qlstats, etc actually made something that isn't niche and could be used to grow this game and make it more competitive. Instead, we get more IRC pickup channels that only the same 23 people care about.

1) IRC is still the best techology. Everything you listed just tries to emulate some of IRC features, but doesn't come even close to it. No one wants to use sub-par services like ones you mentioned, compared to real IRC experience.

2) There is no need to reinvent the wheel. IRC is an IETF standard and it works for decades. Everything else is just a fad.

3) There is nothing good in making Quake accessible to average people. It works best as a small, but strong community of friends, not as a publicly open brothel on a crowded street.

Look at the game. It's a 7 year old remake of (then) 10 year old game. It will never be visually appealing and it's gameplay was never designed to be friendly for noobs who play games like TF or OW. There is no point in making anything that you suggest, QL will never be developing into anything popular. The only real thing that is possible to do is to keep the current playerbase, which is mostly oldschool, for the longest time possible. People who look for "more visually appealing, noob friendly and serve the very purpose of matchmaking" will not look at QL in the first place, let alone at pickups, which are dominated by players much more high skilled than already extremely noob-unfriendly pub servers. You are suggesting to give a nicely designed door for a noob to get squashed by some of world's top clan arena players, oh yeah, a game which offers a pretty web interface to a match where you die on the first second of every round not even able to realize what happened will definitely give motivation to keep playing. There is no way to "match-make" 7 players from world's top50 and one who doesn't realize he can move and shoot at the same time.

I will just say there is nothing easier than joining http://capickup.cf/web-chat and entering your nickname in designated field. Even as guy who never opened irc channel in his life.

I don't hate IRC. In fact, if you are in your early twenties there is a very real possibility that I have been an active user, not merely an idler, of IRC longer than you have been alive on this Earth. I have written code that utilizes IRC as its communication platform (bots and other things). As I type this, I have 3 IRC clients running across three different platforms on different networks. Now that I have gotten my IRC bona fides out of the way, I say that I realize that the best way to grow the competition of this game is not antiquated IRC technology.

In case you have not been around for the last 15 years, practically everything is moving toward the web and will continue to do so (and mobile) whether you like it or not. It makes more sense to use the platform that has the most visibility. But I would not expect you or many other Quakers to understand this, since it goes against the traditional viewpoint of "but we've always done it this way, why change." Also, I realize I am trying to argue a very logical point in a community that still creates threads asking why their game won't work on a largely irrelevant OS like Windows XP or why no mouse is better than the 15 year old IE 3.0.

The world has moved on and we now have the ability to make Quake more competitive and accessible to new and old players alike. But no, we will continue with IRC and !cumbersome !bullshit !commands all so a few people can feel special and stroke their egos by maintaining operator status in a few channels as if anyone cares. It is just so lazy. Meanwhile, new players can hop in TF2Center with voice communication and easily get a game with an intuitive interface.

wish quake community had smart people like that who'd make some qlcenter.

Ignoring all the upset over IRC, if you think some flashy webapp is going to magically make quake popular you have problems m8. Without backing from developers/publishers games don't get anywhere and for a game with as much history as quake I'd argue that it's had the least love from its developer/publisher than any other competitive (or wannabe competitive/esport) game.

Referencing 3rd-party tf2 services which did nothing for tf2 doesn't really help your argument, the game has been dead for over 6 years even with support from valve (albeit limited compared with their other titles). As an aside, the reason for this is because they don't see tf2 as competitive even though it's literally the most well-balanced, competitive thing they've ever made (before they ruined it).

Anyway, you seem to have all the experience and the know how, maybe you should do it?

I am amazed at how people tend to criricize those who actually make efforts for this community

What also amazes me is that those who criticize are most commonly those who don't contribute in any way at all.

Let me remind you of the following:
1) the bots that allow us to still enjoy the game are coded for free by members of our community
2) servers are hosted for your pleasure for free by members of our community who pay out of their pockets without asking for money,
3) some of our members organise tournaments like hoq for free and with prize money and sponsors
4) some of our members also take the time to stream for you over twitch to add some spice...
5) some fight for sponsors and donations to make the leagues and tournaments more interesting.

Question is: what do YOU do for the community and for this game that you supposedly love?

To cut the story short: we can't make the impossible. It is not our role as players/members of the community to develop for id and create ingame matchmaking systems for newbs.

All we can offer is our generosity to take time to code, host dedicated servers, admin and organise leagues for your pleasure and free of any cost.

Rather than criticise be grateful for what we have and thank those who put in all the efforts for your gaming pleasure.

Just my 2 cents on the matter.

I don't think people hate pickups, its the only way to find a decent team game nowadays. I think what bothers people, at least that bothers me to an extent, is that community devs/contributors seem to refuse to use anything but irc. I know how to use irc, but I think something web based would be more appealing and easier for people to get into. What i mean is pressing a button instead of typing !a, !r..., having and interface showing teams, pressing join button instead of copying server IP to console. That being said, im still grateful for everything community has developed for me to enjoy and I'm well aware I never contributed shit to anything

I think it's healthy to bring up the matter. Criticism shouldn't be taken too seriously, everything taken in moderation, I can say that even those who criticize ultimately mean well to the game.

Pickup channels like that are void, alienated from the game and general public behind some kind of outdated third party tool, behind some sort of website that doesn't even promote such channels on a larger scale for increased awareness.

It's nice that we have players who contribute, I'd just like apples instead of oranges, thanks. :)

Shuffle, stats integration, picking mode etc...
It can be more powerfull and useful, using a steam protocol.
