Yes quad damage is perfectly balanced in qw no problem with that. Also, there are other weapons than RL? Lol at Leopold. make a best-of fragmovie and great to see qw is undieable. [+]

For anyone interested in playing QW, this is a good opportunity to get started, just install qw, get IRC, go to
quakenet and join #qwrookie and #div99, especially in #div99 there are lots of low to no-skill players. We'll try to make several low-skill teams if we have enough ppl there.

How long do you usually wait for pickups to start?

In QW, pub TDM isn't approached via pickup channels on IRC or such. You just join a server. When 8 are there, teams get picked either by rpickup (random) or captains and off it goes. So it depends on day and time of day how long you may have to wait. Normally after 19-20:00 CEST onwards.

Somedays no mixes happen, sometimes there are 2 servers crowded.

Maybe its not imbalanced. I have half a thought in my head about what I mean and I almost certainly cant put it into words, but the guns on QW are super fucking powerful, but all of them are like that (at least LG, RL and GL)

Everyone has access to them all and while spawnkilling and steamrolling is a big thing in QW duel, both players have equal chance to do that and an out of control player can come back in with some meaty "fuck you up" rockets and start spawnraping the guy that was spawnraping them in the first place

So maybe it isnt that its imblanced, just that everything is a few notches higher in terms of power than in the rest of the duel games we know

People use the word balance in a weird way. Literally, imbalance is the essence of games, especially multiplayer games. Thing A is stronger than thing B. You need thing A to beat thing B. By using the correct things at the right times you overcome obstacles. In chess the pieces are "imbalanced" - certain ones are stronger than others. Even in checkers every turn places the players in increasingly less balanced situations, not to mention the kinging mechanic.

This is why playing out of control in Quake is so interesting. You don't have the tools to beat the other player when you spawn. Their armor and weapons are stronger than yours. That's where the difference in mechanical skill and general cleverness come into play. Even though your opponent has more tools to kill you, if you have a plan or split-second reactions you can turn a situation around very quickly. The fact that the weapons are powerful enough to break an in-control player who slips up so fast makes the game exciting, and makes the in-control player work. The imbalance of the weapons - the fact that some are stronger than others, however situation dependent - is where a lot of the depth of the game ends up stemming from.

In a less literal sense, balance is a very hard word to define. Obviously there are cases in games like Diablo where some weapons combined with certain effects are just stupidly game breaking. When people talk about imbalance in games, they generally mean cases of extreme imbalance, but not always.

tl;dr I shouldn't post when I've been drinking because I tend to ramble. Games are complicated.

The problem with your train of thought is that you have duel in mind which is the worst mode in qw. What frs meant was only in regards to TDM and there the powerful weapons aren't just freely available to everyone.

Imho balanced weapons work great for a duel mode but TDM needs some weapons to actually be really powerful to work well.

How many players are around in this div99? Assuming I'm a scrub with 5 ELO, can I find more than 10 people to FFA together and learn more about QW TDM/Duel?

i have only 9 or 10 fingers on my hand, so no idea how many there are atm., was afk for 1/2 year, but yea, get on board and see for yourself (dunno about FFA, but TDM/Duel for sure)

Quake 2 is more balanced and has a lot more depth than Quakeworld. Though there is no shame to be a Quakeworld player (unlike Quakelive), Quake 2 is the true Quake, and always will be.

Quake 2 was the most unpopular quake game for a reason.

Yeah, because it was by far the most difficult by a stretch. Most games, like Quakelive, are dumbed down for the masses.

Quake 2 for a qw player was so fucking easy... It's like you suddenly start to play in slow motion...

Funny -- every Quakeworld player I ever knew or seen try to switch to Quake 2 struggled. Quake 2 players became strategically more dominant than any other in the series.

Most Quakeworld players moved onto Quake 3 because it was a lot more dumbed down and aim based, catered more to their style.
