Well, part of it was finals week. Then I took a vacation and didn't play at all. Then I come back and my audio is messed up. Also, inconsistent sleep schedule and not enough sleep in general.

But it shouldn't matter. After so many duels I should be dropping down to 1600 elo after a string of unfortunate events, not 1300.

most important in quake (give or take a bit) is the choices you make.
When tired do you ever think "fuck it I'll win this fight" and just go in? While in normal mode you hardly ever think that? (or perhaps the other way around)

That's usually it for me... like atm my elo is probably around 1650 or something.... But when I really wanna win.... I'll give them a really good game ;)
But I just don't really care so much anymore... my competitive times have are long gone due to several reasons :p

obi, when you give criticism / advice to someone else...
It's always nice (for the one on the receiving end) to "make it seem as if it is a very normal thing" I do that by saying that I have the same mindset issue.

That wem always plusses me.... I dunno what his issue is.... I explained some stuff to him a long time ago... now he seems like he's my one and only fan :(

That I include the last line on there is just because otherwise you would come in and write it yourself... and I don't wanna give you the satisfaction of insulting me...
Seems like you found another way to do that though...

Obi whining at Weird who is genuinely trying to help other people... Another day on esr.

Your aim is probably shit, your movement could probably improve, your timing is probably poor, your decision making, and positional play could use an overhaul... but all of this can be improved, it just requires a focused plan, and you'll need to tackle one thing at a time.

Maybe just focus on vq3 defrag (Race in QL?) for a few months, improve your general movement techniques, full strafe, half-beats, circle jumps, rocket jumps, nade jumps, plasma climbs, correctly moving around corners, etc... then move on to to the next thing.

For timing, make some a sheet of all pickup times, and the corresponding time for YA/RA, and MH (flash cards are helpful) so that when you pickup an item at @ X:25, you only see X:50 (the next item time), and learn to play between these times. You have to reach a point where you stop calculating altogether when it comes to item timing, and just recognize the patterns so that you stop wasting time e.g. you pick up RA @X:13.. you're doing the math, and jumping at the same time, even if its for two, three, four seconds, you've weakened your ability to sense your enemies location, maybe you don't hear a sound cue, or miss a visual cue.

Once your movement, and timing are on par with the best -- or close to, which I think any player can achieve, you start playing X amount of games per day, and reviewing your best game, and worst game, trying to figure out why you started losing, what were poor decisions, what were good decisions; with the item timers on, you'll be have a better sense of how you SHOULD have moved around the map.

For your aim, play some CA to warm-up, but play super aggressive, don't play passive, constantly look for very low % shots. Going into a CA server and playing passively can make you think you have good aim ("Oh shit I'm hitting 60% RAIL IM SO CA$H") but in reality, the likelihood of missing those shots were very low... Otherwise play CTF, or TDM, and place yourself in a punishing role where you have to do massive amounts of damage (e.g. secondary attacker, support players in general are expected to do a lot, without very much).

In general this should help your aim, and game, will likely net you a 2K+ ELO but it requires dedication, and you have to ask yourself if it's at all worth it? You've played 2, 700 duels, but you haven't really trained at all.

hey ephemix, let's play tf2.

I just started playing that game since quake in NA is completely dead.
it is actually faster than quake if you choose scout class, and has way more players.
you dont have to spend 30min - 1 hour to find a dueler.

let me know your steam account

i agree, I will not leave this game if there are enough players because this is the best game in the world.
but in north america it is really dead.

at 9 or 10pm there are usually only 2 or 3 duel servers.
right now it is 6:30pm, and only 2 duel servers with actual players.

it is hard to find a good practice opponent whose level is similar to yours.
it is even worse if you live west.
playing with 70+- ping can be the only option you have a lot of the time.

i am so sad and i still hope it will get better.

You think you have it bad??? Try playing in any region other than NA or Europe. I sometimes wait an hour in empty servers looking for a duel opponent in Aus at peak hours, usually I give up after about 20 mins.

this game has ups and downs man, you have to just ride the wave. when you notice yourself dropping alot try to just focus on one core element of your game that you would like to improve, that way even if all your games are going bad you feel like you are doing something productive. Also important to remember ELO doesn't reflect your (or anyones) true skill =)

edit: breaks from quake are 100% necessary.

honestly rail whore + slow rocket play alot, at first you'll lose but as you learn to aim you'll start keeping people at bay. I'd strongly recommend you play in your neck of the ELO woods, don't try to play guys that are 1600+. just gonna be too good at attacking for you to effectively learn defensive play. slow rocket play includes alot of spam. you want to learn how to do as much free damage as possible. anything that can lower stack before a face to face confrontation is something that is invaluable to you, it'll let you dictate the fight more and also reduce any options the attacking player might have.

people will talk shit to you for this. they will say you're a rail whore faggot, or a pussy, or a stupid +back rocket skill less queer, or any number of things. ignore them, don't even respond. words do not directly affect anything in the game, they don't make items respawn faster, and they don't give free points. quake is, by nature, a defensive game. anybody who says otherwise mid match just wants you to +fwd so they can do the ez damage to you. fuck that shit. do the ez damage to them.

if you can rail snipe people from a distance to cripple them you'll have a lot easier time playing. you'll have much more room around the map, and be able to take items cleanly frequently. I'm sure you're asking, how do I hit more rails? is it better positioning? should i be faster? time QUICKER? to which i say, stop overthinking. you're trying to be cerebral but what you need is pure mechanical wonder. stop worrying about exact timing, stop worrying about positioning. learn to fight in all areas of the map regardless of 'what the proper positioning should be' once you get to the upper tiers, worry about that. everything else is just practice towards that goal. you need raw mechanical skill and to get that, you just gotta grind. learning to do okay with rockets + rail play (using LG when you absolutely have to, but focus on playing defensively) should net ya like 250-300+ elo EZ if you can rock a 35-45% railgun with lots of shots fired. ez damage is ez life.

playing slow and rocket/rail oriented will give you a good back bone to defend with, and as you take more damage off your opponents you'll learn how to slow the game a bit. you'll also slowly begin to learn how important getting the first bit of damage in is, and you'll also start reacting more quickly as you become more 'intimate' with your sensitivity and aim.

tl;dr you need mechanical ability.

Stop giving a fuck about winning or losing or your elo. Instead, give yourself certain goals. Like let's say you're playing someone with 200 more elo, make the goal keeping the score below X, or you notice you always lose frags at a certain spot, make it your goal to play that position better. It's practice, the point is to learn, not necessarily to win. Personally, I also think it's essential to let it all go every once in awhile and just run around trying for silly shots. Make sure it stays fun and doesn't become a chore because if it does, you're gonna get burned out on the game sooner or later.

Getting pissed if you lose is always strange from a 'rational' viewpoint. Losing is simply part of the game and you have to expect to lose say, at least 30% of the time. It takes a while to realise that though.

That being said i find it quite the opposite: if you get crushed so bad and can't seem to do anything against it, it is really frustrating.
I don't understand guys who ragequit typing bg and insult, if a game was close and they lost.

I get less frustrated when I'm clearly being outplayed than when I'm losing a close game, because often it means I could've won if I just played a little better and I know I'm the kind of person who performs better when the challenge is bigger.

I am strange.

quit playing duel, duel is for the motivated people, lazybums get tired at it sooner or later. There is always someone who has been trying at it harder than you ever have, and you will meet this tryhard person and get pwnt.

However if you want to have short term of pleasure of pwning some people at your level and around +400 or so above, try to master rail like a motherfucker. The day you can hit 2 out of 3 rails from any distance, any pressure situation, versus any kind of dodging, fucking ALWAYS, you will be a force to reckon with.

Personally, if I don't have a goal with something, I find it quite a bother to exceed myself at getting better. Sure, there's a period where learning is fun, refining is fun, and you see yourself getting better. But think about it; time, effort, genuine devotion, all put into improving yourself at Quake duel, something that might not even be satisfying past a short period, let alone rewarding. If one applied themselves to something else it could have meant more, right?

If there were leagues and divisions with an established base, even if it weren't flourishing, it would go a long way. If there was a division for 1300-1600 elo for example, your journal might've been titled 'Need tips to improve' rather than 'I give up'. A lot of it would come from simply having set targets for yourself.

As for tips in QL, I'd agree with what has already been said: be more defensive and hit your rails, keeps the opponent struggling and at a distance. This will probably only work for random games, not serious matches where being more strategic matters.
If at any point it feels like a chore or if you're just not enjoying your time, STOP. Just go do something else.
And try your best to discern deliberate practice from just playing intuitively. Good luck :)

Do what I did. I have shitty aim, so I decided to get good at timing. I've spend hours and hours and hours practising how to count in 35s (and 25s), then spend hours and hours practising timing in game. Now I've come to point where it's second nature to time mega. My elo is up to 1600. (Yes, it's still shitty)

I've personally found that my elo (if we want to talk about skill in terms about elo, herp derp) goes up by +100 per major item that I time.

There is always room for improvement. Obviously no one credits ESP for their victories and no one says it's easy to learn Bach. Things like this take time. More time for some less time for others. Natural skill is debatable and another topic altogether. I think approach and attitude matter a great deal. Something to consider though is maybe duel is not for you. That is not necessarily something bad. I rarely duel because it stresses me out. I tend to over analyze and it's hard to just relax and play a good game. For this reason I play other modes. So duel for me is better to watch than play. Food for thought.

Find a better doctor. My brother has some serious chemical imbalances and it has taken many years to find a doctor that works well with him and has found a good combination and dosage of mess. So, while I know many conditions are incredibly hard to solve entirely, finding the "right" doctor can make a huge difference.

i thought you were asking "any suggestions (on finding better meds)". or did you mean "any suggestions (on what meds would be better)?" because that would be stupid for me to try to diagnose you over the internet, as a laymen and not a medical professional.

Powerful armament. It is also very heavy which makes it ideal for boom and zoom fighting style. Dive from high altitude, fire your machine guns and zoom away quickly with all the speed gained from dropping altitude. It is a one of a kind plane from WW2 no other quite like it.

I wish more people played TDM in North America. It is a superior to Clan Arena and can be a gateway into other modes since items are involved. I don't understand why Clan Arena is so popular. It is the fast food of Quake Live. No substance.
