1/8 of its GDP, so they'll produce that in one and a half month. No biggie.

That's not how it works, especially if your main source of income are potatoes...

GDP is the monetary value of all final goods produced in a year. If the theft didn't impair the capital stock (it didn't but there's less funds for maintenance) the math would work perfectly in my initial post. Of course it will hurt the productive capacity through a diminished pool of short-term investable funds so it won't be over in one and a half months but the article makes it sound as if 12,5 percent of all of Moldova vanished all of a sudden. That's several orders of magnitude less accurate than my admittedly tongue-in-cheek remark.

Potatoes or iPhones - 1/8 is always 1/8.

What about investor confidence? Would you invest anything there knowing your money could just disappear?

That's where capital maintenance and short-term capital will suffer, but not more durable capital goods, which constitute the dominant part of the structure of production that allows for "the GDP" to be churned out every year.

It certainly does have an effect but nothing resembling 1/8 of the economy. It's still a tragedy, in my initial post I was being sarcastic in saying "no biggie".

funny how they talk in the article that Moldova is trying to adopt European standards, like I don't really know what is so Godlike superior about the European "standards" and who would be so crazy to follow them. Because

the idea of being honest existed long before EU
working hard existed long before EU
the nations of Europe existed long before the EU was formed, but it is highly questionable if the nations of Europe would survive under the EU tyranny

what we got with the EU:
-unprecedented levels of corruption, hidden under fancy names like OIC, UNHCR,
or the Mafia of illegal immigration: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/06...drugs.html

-the idea that small Eastern states must bow to the will of the Western states and adopt their dogmas -the Westerns are using bribe and political pressure or economical blackmail to force all the European nations to adhere to the communist-like supremacist think tank

-the auto destructive multiculturalism agenda who is slowly but for sure like dying of old age replacing the Europeans with foreign populations

-the increased impotence of the European nations to defend their identity, because the infection of the educational system by the liberal "progressive" ideologies:

"Have you heard about the millions of Chinese flooding into the Tibet? With their displacement of the native peoples and the supplanting of Tibetan with Chinese culture, anthropologists and human rights activists have labeled the colonization “cultural genocide.” (See here, here, here, here, and here, for example.) It is a cause célèbre with its own popular bumper sticker:

The situation corresponds precisely to what’s happening in most Western countries — most notably the United States — except for one minor detail:

No compassionate liberal activists call it cultural and demographic genocide.

They call it “diversity.”
http://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2015/...ation.html

-the attack on the Christian values, rendering impotent once again any resistance, since any good old system would be vanished and Europeans would have nothing to defend anymore -in this respect the Africans are 10 levels above the West already, as they still have solid faith in the traditional role of normal families to develop healthy populations, from a birth rates point of view if nothing else

-the Western "values" who gave equal rights to women and who in turn created the demographic crisis in the West equaling demographic death

-the Western "values" who would give equal rights to homosexuals and who would make the demographic crisis even more acute equaling demographic death

-the ever increasing level of censorship and pushing individuals into a corner and silencing them if they dare to speak against the liberal tyrannical intolerant views

-the practice of putting all together ethnic groups, races and categories who share their history of fighting each other in bloody wars spanning over hundreds of years, who would one day produce the explosion, civil wars and full scale wars and would result in the rise of necessarily extremist movements who would appear as the only viable option to counter the ever strangulating ever bigger progressive Islamo-socialist systems and the ever bigger non-European population

-the practice of using foreign demographic schemes to empower the leaders with additional votes

-the practice of using the money of the people they ought to protect to finance their foreign demographics who ought to push the Europeans into minority and towards a total social-economical-cultural mess, the practice to use peoples money against the people they ought to defend

-the practice of using Antifa gov-payed gov-organized groups in order to keep the impression of "pluralism" in order to annihilate any resistance

-the practice of using a barrage of predefined words in order to block any critical analysis and so to paralyze any resistance against cultural and demographic assimilation, words like "racism", "intolerance", "xenophobia", "homophobia", "hate speech"

and the list of the evils of the EU "values" one more deadly than the other goes on and on and on

although you come across as a far right halfwit in your anti-EU rant, you (especially you) have to concede the fact that EU rid us of a certain cumbersome minority that now pesters Swedes, French and Brits alike

it is a spectacle worth the price of admission.
