I can't believe Twitch Administration is stupid enough to allow this.

They are, the amount of revenue they have been gaining. They were becoming one of the biggest companies. Do you know how much Twitch will die now? Google only buys organizations if they think they're a challenge, which Twitch was becoming to be.

Don't get me wrong, if I had $1B in front of my face for a site then I'd be all in for it. But if I really would have spent a while thinking about it, I would've realized that giving it to Google would be the stupidest mistake.

google prevents youtube livestreaming to germany, because there might be (music) content, for which they don't have an agreement with the german GEMA.
twitch hasn't an office in germany, so I guesd they don't care.

Capitalism isnt perfect, but has been shown to be better than the alternatives. All that Capitalism needs is some regulation to not allow people to become so rich they can buy anything, ofc the ones at power doesnt want this so prolly will never happen.

I was just typing that up when I saw this thread. This is shitty news for our privacy and net neutrality worldwide. Oh well, at least maybe I'll get my video game streams with less lag.

Edit: Crazy that it cost half as much as youtube though. That must be good news for D I G I T A L S P O R T S, I guess.

Don't forget this was back in 2006 when youtube was big but not that big. It was just the better stream upload site. I still hate the amount of astronomical numbers they come up with, 1 mirrion dollas, triple billion, 100 gazillion.....

You know the reality is this you can have the best site in the world, say a file host, unlimited speed, download managers, "files are hosted on our servers" ad message, simultaneous download, unlimited storage space etc. Yet a site that has 50kbps download speed cap, no download managers allowed, no file downloads at the same time, ban angry mods, and just anything that is wrong with the picture, i guarantee you they will be x100 more successful than the other people. You know why?

It's beyond me. Till this day I haven't heard about Twitch TV nor have I ever searched for anything that I may want to watch being streamed. The reason I don't have a TV is because I don't want to view a program on the fly instead I rather download/record it and view it later at more convenient time. Worst part, all twitch tv does is appeal to gamers where they stream games. Not a single world cup match or anything different than gameplays. How is Google offering that much money to a potential good site? Sense, it makes not.

Maybe I'm missing something

It's about twitch numbers, twitch & esports growth these past years and not being able to beat them with youtube live I think. So it's based on potential.

Why twitch stream the world cup? Seriously, why?

The very first line of the twitch wiki page says: Twitch.tv is a live streaming video platform focused on e-sports and video gaming.[2] .

So, yes, when you say 'Worst part, all twitch tv does is appeal to gamers where they stream games,' you are, in fact, missing something. Because Video Games is what the entire website focuses on! :D

It's sort of like if the channels devoted to only football(soccer) and someone saying 'this is so stupid! why aren't they streaming twitch play pokemon!?' =)

Google bought the infrastructure and technology to the largest streaming site on the web. They may keep the twitch brand gaming only, but they're probably using everything else for other stuff too.

Well twitch saves streams so they can be watched later. Google acts like Microsoft, they got the money so they're buying everything off to enhance their monopoly power and pulverize every bit of competition. They have been doing it for ages.

It's no joke. It seems like it's coming closer to being a reality everyday. I have little doubt at some point in my life the internet is going to be trimmed down to a "handful" of corporate sponsored and government sanctioned sites. Anyone caught viewing or running a "pirate" website will face criminal charges and possibly labeled a terrorist. Laws, punishments, and enforcement seem to be getting tougher all the time... for the wrong people.

Unfortunately, it seems that net neutrality is eroding at an alarming rate. This might be just one step on the way into an Orwellian nightmare with no chance of waking up.

We have come to a point where the (US) government and a few private companies have enough information to blackmail pretty much anyone into complete submission. Even if you have never used the internet for something that is socially stigmatized (i.e. anything even remotely porn) they will just make stuff up if they feel the need to.

Some Governments have used this to attack people running Tor nodes. Apparently anonymity and privacy is the public enemy.
