You'd have to play on walk only and with a controller or deal with insane motion sickness. I've got an oculus rift and wouldn't dream of playing something fast in it..

to quote the article

It changes the way you play the game, although it doesn't necessarily make things easier. It's simpler and faster to aim with a mouse and keyboard, and it's less distracting. Virtual reality isn't designed for people who want high scores and to be the best. Instead it turns first-person shooters into haunted houses, and even fast-paced games can feel like survival horror. It's not for everyone, but it's a hell of a ride.

that's my thoughts towards this experience too, although i don't yet have a rift. what's it like?

It's very, very cool. The VR illusion is absolutely convincing and worth the $300 to experience. The first time you put the headset on you really feel like you are transported into another world.

That said, it (the devkit) is definitely not a consumer product. The resolution is terrible and there is perceptible screen lag, even with all the work Palmer and/or Carmack put into reducing latency. Imo this is where most of the motion sickness comes from, but I'm no expert.

Games are *horrifying* in this thing. I played about 2 hours of Half Life 2, and just having a lifesize combine running at you to whack you with his stun baton is a bit unnerving. The sense of scale is something I didn't expect being so drastic. Playing HL2 the normal way, everything feels tiny. Like action figures or something. In the OR they are life sized and in your face. Buildings tower over you, etc.

Do you have any specific questions?

how does using a gamepad to move around feel? I imagine having analog control of movement is far better than a keyboard. the rift is used to look around aswell as aim right? after playing some fps games on the wii I think a more advanced pointer would be perfect to combine the analog movement of a gamepad with the precision of a mouse. so I guess what I'm asking there is would looking around with the rift and aiming independently be a good? also aiming down sights seems made for this. what are the current illusion breaking elements? did you go to ravenholm? :)

I didn't really notice a difference between analog movement and digital keyboard movement, personally. The biggest difference is being able to swivel my desk chair almost completely around, so if I'm just exploring tech demos I never really have to touch the controller to move my camera.

Aiming wise, it seemed a bit strange to use both headtracking and mouse independently. HL2, by default in VR mode, sets a sort of deadzone in the middle of the screen, where you use the mouse/crosshair more like a cursor, then turn your head to look around. You could also turn normally by moving the mouse past the dead zone. Controllers work the same way, but with an analog stick instead of the mouse.

I believe HL2 supports use of the Razer Hydra motion controller for aiming, and then you could stand up and rotate 360 degrees and aim independantly. There's also a pretty neat looking tech demo that uses the rift and hydras to detect your standing positions here: http://www.shacknews.com/article/80388/hydrad...-hydra-for

Currently the tracking isn't perfect, so as I understand it iron sights don't always line up correctly, so he added a laser sight for now. All of that is just what I've read though, I don't have hydras to test it out.

After playing with the OR, I think the best way to actually play a fps game with it would be in a sort of arcade/laser tag environment, with 1:1 gun tracking as well as the omni treadmill for movement.

Carmack said that a lot of motion sickness comes from ghosting on the display. This will be improved in the future.

it talks about the difficulties of reading text or using the hud in this article. i also remember carmack talking about the hacks to display the gun model that are used in all fps games just do not work at all with the oculus rift. surely hudless gaming and a fully rendered avatar from a first person view aren't that hard to accomplish. for health you could incorporate audio clues like grunts, screams and crying.. or blood dripping as you walk. looking down and seeing your legs and arms carrying a gun would be good. inventory could be replaced with a bag you open and look into. ammo could be a counter on the gun you use. first poster was right in that fast games aren't ideally suited but with a little ingenuity more will be done with future fps titles.

Yeah, in a full suit covered with electrodes to give you the exact sensation of having limbs and organs removed and replaced while you lay helpless in a conveyor belt.
