tbh i dont really like ins' voice. not meant for casting. dont care if he does though. Also you guys judge other players that aren't cooller and cypher as if they're complete noobfuckers. give some respect to the up and comers.

What first caught my eye in zoot was that he really did give respect to everybody and even concentrated to welcoming newer players, imo! When it comes to ins, he's consistently becoming better and better hushh with the whine now =))

zoot started off really uptight but with time he relaxed / got more confident and now i'd say he's pretty good. can't really compare them with 2gd and joe, who were the gods of casting, but they are doing a really good job.

I like when they're casting immediately after ins has lost a close match he really, really wanted -- ins will mumble something mournfully at random times and durations during Zoot's excited pace. The contrast is some of the funniest shit I've ever heard in a quakecast.

But seriously, Zoot has come a long way. The awkward phrasings, lapses into colloquialisms and occasional but very human grammar gaffes make him much more accessible/interesting than a generically slick professional caster that everyone's heard before.

ins: He's a caster who actually competitively duels many of the high-tier players he casts. This kind of insight into most of the player base informs his commentary with all kinds of nuggets and details, blending smoothly with Zoot play-by-play.

With Zoot there is always excitement, I can't help it but enjoy it because he enjoys it, it just catches. Then you have the excellent british accent, of course. And ins gaming insight. Great combo. DDK is very professional, but there is always sweat on his forehead, it just doesn't look that comfortable. With Zoot, you always feel at home - even (or especially if) he's talking random bullshit, I really enjoy those parts, too :)

the thing is, DDK's random bullshit is much more subtle, and you will have a hard time catching it if english isn't your first language.

I didn't say anything about that here. Anyway, this is an old post. DDK is Pro. Although yesterday it could be felt that stermy was a little ill and the cast was long.

Edit: And I'm a little ill too, so forgive me if I don't catch everything.

What I mean is, DDK can also make you feel at home too ))

I watched zoot's stream when he had barely any viewers on and was basically a no-name, his casting from the very first days still shines through today's broadcasts.

The awkward moments and inappropriate commentary are still there, but the overall casting improved a lot and there's much less OOOOH THAT ROCKET OHOHOH

Ins got much better as well but I don't find his voice as nice to the ear - he's got great game insight though, which kinda balances it out.

Would love to hear more Fear though

Appreciations, appreciations. About Ins's voice - it reminds me of Mike Matei's. Maybe not preferable at first, but recognizable and with time one might find himself missing it.

when zoot first started casting he was quite the nub really, when he improved his game and became a good player it helped his casting loads.
I really think he is great and enjoyable now that almost all nubbery is gone, he still reads some situations wrong though ;)

In regards of ingame insight, those two have surely reached a new level, even 2gd did not achieve. There are many good quake casters, but zoot and ins became the best of the best imo.

I mean they are rolling out the strategic game of the players, what they did right or wrong, why they do certain moves, the options in certain situations, why something looking really casual is an amazing move etc.

imo 2gd was the best up until some month ago in that regard, but now I think ins/zoot offer more insight, while being very entertaining.

I mean the best players themselfes usually offer the most complete insight, but casters have really caught up lately, as addition they offer great entertainment as well.

No caster has ever come close to this level (video), with top player insight, good voice and being entertaining. 2gd was the best quake caster of all time (is there anyone that disagrees with that statement?) while zoot/ins and others have not reached that level.

The map starts at 1:16:00, best to start at 1:04:00. A way of appreciating the cast more is what rapha says in ESL classics, because 2gd goes deeper than that, explains everything to everyone of all skill levels -including people that don't play quake-, and does it live (no time to think no pauses for explaining). The whole package and excels the duo in all individual aspects.




In the end there's a reason why the two casters in the video now work for the most important e-sport related companies of them all, having both started in pk/q4 (same community same handicap compared to other games). They are in charge of millions of viewers instead of 500 because they are the best.

I think that 2gd's ability to read the game / read what the players are trying to do is a lot better than that of ins / zoot.
But ins / zoot are casting the games purely from what they would do in a situation like that... not at all caring for what the player's ideas of the game are.

For instance zoot plays a really item heavy style himself... so in casts he fairly often goes: OMFG HOW CAN SOMEONE FORGET ABOUT RA?

While in fact the player thinks: my nmy will expect me to take ra! I can jump up here and get to a possition to deal damage unexpectedly fast!
Now ofcourse this kind of thinking can also backfire on you but it is a "valid way of thinking". While zoot/ins think that you're making a stupid mistake which "sometimes turns out lucky".

People like rapha/cooller/cypher for example do not make those type of mistakes. They sometimes make a wrong choice. But it's almost never due to their lack of knowledge. It's just because they read eachothers moves well.

I don't believe that you listen to the casts in a non-biased way as I know you hold something against me (god knows why). The examples you are listing are not the most intricate of strategies that would blow over my head.

I wouldn't want to compare myself and Ins to the 2gd and Joe combo, how ever I wouldn't degrade myself to the utter non-sense that you are on about.

2GD was one of the best uk duelers back in the day playing under the nick jay.. when the game was very competitive.
Saying that, he has nice insight but in his last castings i could tell it seemed like he wasn't really that much updated regarding the evolution of the game, by the fact he was inactive for so long.

Never noticed any hate from zoot towards your person weird.. only thing i remember was when we were all making noise so you could cast once with him and he denied, probably because our motives behind the request were childish =(

I don't know what you're refering to? But my requests to co-cast have (imo) never been childish. In all my casts (not that many) I've been very professional.

I don't think that you need to play the game on a high level to be a good commentator. So that they were at a good level is irrelevant imo.
What is relevant though is that they both think that their own way of playing is the correct way of playing. And therefor other moves are WRONG.
I do not share that opinion. Every move you can make in quake is a valid one... as long as it has a purpose. Often moves like leaving up an item are not mistakes but are choices you make which have a succes percentage.

If you always go for the "high win percentage" you end up with a gameplan which leaves you very little space to work with. You always have to go to some place. That kind of way of thinking will eventually make you lose games.
It's like people learning to time.... they try to get to each item on time and they only get worse and worse results because their game gets too predictable. Untill they realize that they can time items without having to go for them and suddenly they are good players.

I know... he was even better in TDM together with deus at the time when q3tdm was huge. I think he only showed us his duel skill in Q4 though (I don't remember him as a prominent duel player in Q3 at least) at which he got as high as top4 at some point.
The thing I like about 2GD's casts though (as they were in the past) is that he always focussed on the positive aspects of the choices people made and tried to (negatively) judge their gameplay as little as possible.

Yeah well i agree that you don't need to be a top level dueler to be a good caster, there are many examples of that in many sports.. like boxing, football etc etc.

But i kinda appreciate when a good dueler gives a bit of insight instead of simply being a narrator of what is going on like "he picked mega, he got the frag, hit the rail".

Didn't know that you casted with zoot.. that must have been legendary times! Anyways i never seen any sign that he might dislike you, but then again im not zoot!

Honestly none is perfect at what they do, but i would say they are far from bad and have been developing a nice chemistry.. construtive criticism never hurts tho!

I appreciate it as well when good duellers give insight..... but I dislike it when they say something is a wrong choice / a bad choice / whatever because they don't understand what the player is trying to achieve or personally disagree with the thing the player is trying to achieve.

Theres a huge difference between saying: "I don't like what he's doing here -> this is so dangerous to ignore the mega"
compared to: "Omfg he forgot about the mega... that is a game changing mistake there"

And well imo the later happens too often... Ingame the player tries some sneaky move which might win him the game when succesfull... and then the casters go: "this is rediculously bad.... he's miss timing stuff like mad here"

As much as I miss 2gd and joe casting, I'm glad these two are here. I mean when was the last time 2gd casted a game of quake ? Surely he could step in here and there because he's just so good at this, and loves quake....

Zoto won me over totally this Quakecon.
Firstly when i saw him the first day doing his Zoto-face on LAN, in such a nice enviroment for the event and the players, my subconciousness just drove me standing up just smiling and going "\o/ Z O T O" IRL.
And I remember the first times i watched him, i didn't like zoot's style at all, the voice tone, the heavy PbP only... Honestly he was aweful LOL. In life there's a thing works pretty much all the time: hard work pays off.
When, at the finals, finally DDK and Zoto were on screen i was genuinely excited for them, they were feeling the energy and completing eachother are they both evolved in decent play be play and color casters. An awesome finals, so anticipated and still above the expectations and really well casted by 2 guys in love for the game. That's when it was just clear how much that hard work paid off. Don't forget where you started turds, because that's what'll drive you to become really good and some of the better casters ever for quake.

Don't sleep on a golden bed motherfuckers, still you miss some situations or missread the players behavoir and\or moves. So keep it going!!!

Last 3 words for ins: Fuck you LOL
