In terms of career path, I can only approve your choice.
Good DBAs (especially Oracle ones) are scarce resource, so when you'll get a bit of experience in the field (let's say 2years), the market will be really profitable.
You'll surely get loads of offers, especially if you're staying in the UK (London $$$).
In comparison, J2EE developers are canon fodder ^^

But in terms of experience, yeah as said above, don't be too negative, at least you've seen something different, it's always a good thing.
