@Slasher I help always by playing, sponsoring and endorsing Quake for over 10 years now. Quake Live is still a part of my show with fans.

I like how they write "$14,000.00" instead of "$14,000" so that it appears like a much bigger amount at first sight.

Everyone was bitching that he's only making money by selling his name and not giving any money back to the community...

Now everybodey is crying that he is supporting a MMOBA-Title (which has the biggest audience in modern eSports today) instead of a 10 year old, dying game with a peak of what, 7k viewers??? Seriously get your head out of your ass guys, atleast he is giving something back!

I will watch the tournament just for the sake of proving him right in his decision, because supporting QL would be cool as fuck but it's just not rentable as a advertisement-platform and at the end of the day he is still a businessman with a very realistic view on things concerning his field of work and not a hopeless optimist.

I always thought "giving back" means not giving something to earn 10 times as much :D
I think that is called investment.

Cheers.

You can't at the same time argue that he is giving back and that it's ok because it's more profitable. If he is using something as advertisement platform that is not "supporting" but "investing".

following that line, thresh could also sponsor some QL tournaments.

He's not like fatality though, who made a name entirely out of quake3 and then forgot about it. Thresh started as a player but he got his cash out of understanding the scene and ultimately giving some back to it (xfire and raptr), but some cash would be nice still.

Same thing goes to anyone who made a living out of this....which sadly applies only to those 2.

but there would be no point for tresh sponsoring a LoL tournament, since noone would recognize him.

the point is not that he made (hey man, 1000years ago) a living out of it and owes us (as one of the communities he participated) anything.

actually dunno where this dumb thought comes from. you should know that with playing a fucking game there doesn't come any kind of responsibility with it. neither you're the worst or the best

Oh, I definitly agree he isn't obliged to anything. But since he now decided to run tournaments not to run a quake one? I mean comeon. If I suddenly won the lottery I know I would run some quake cups :p It's just sad to see he doesn't seem to care much about quake.

agree, kind of sad. but he didn't win in the lottery either and i'm kind of curious to know if his marketing odyssey was a success financially or personally. i doubt it

the name "fatal1ty" is still recognized and to see his name instead of amd, asrock or whatever as a sponsor doesn't make any difference.

and btw. would you sponsor a tournament for community that hates you? :P

Well almost every single electronics store I have been to in the past few years in multiple countries featured some of his products so I'm gonna asume he earn millions of dollars every year.

edit: I may have misunderstood what you were saying. Generally even if his brand is recognized sponsoring some events isn't necessarily a bad thing. People are more inclined to buy his products if they know he sponsors tournaments for them to show appreciation (see people saying they buy zotac stuff because of the ql cups). Also since he puts his new products up as prizes people check them out, see their characteristics and what they are worth etc.

hmm

e: no, i think you got me right. if he really is established and his brand is doing well, there should pop up the opportunity to run a cup, ie like zotac. that leaves me actually to the personal argument (:P) that noone knows how he is receiving the general hate of his former community. especially when it's not relevant for marketing issues.

The possible market in lol is way bigger. Especially all those 12-16 year olds are an easy target.

I think he could easily run a weekly cup or even a yearly event but he probably just doesn't give a crap about it and he's just aiming for more money and exposure for his brand.

Dear Fatal1ty,

You were once a very good player, earned a lot of money thanks to quake, and now you use that money to get even more. We understand it.

But dont say how much you love quake series, in every interview with you, cause your actions say something different. You dont care at all about your roots.

Why dont you invest some of the money you earned thanks to quake, to make it bright again?

Forever yours,
Quake Community

He sits there and wants to support Quake Live yet did nothing.

Now he throws money at League of Legends. The problem isn't that he's sponsoring a tournament, it's that he's supporting a game that doesn't need the support. LoL brings in more viewers and more players than any other e-sports game.

He could of thrown 5K at Quake and it would of meant something. Actually meant something and made a difference. Throwing 5K at LoL means nothing.

Throwing 5K at LoL will make much more with the sales since he probably gets royalty/share(?) after any sales connected with the Fatal1ty brand. Throwing 5K at QL would generate nothing.

We can agree that he should help Quake sometimes, but apparently, he doesn't really care.

i have other things i want to spend my freetime with than making a point. but i guess in 1000posts there were several points i made, if i have to, i do. but acting on a psychological level is just a bigger challenge than getting facts out of internet researches. how boring

e: i think we talked in the megaupload thread. you revealed very fast that you just wanted to prove me wrong, without having any substantial knowledge of the issue. so you just did it for "being right". we ended the discussion with an agreement on "kickstarter is okay", so nothing about the issue at all.

conclusion is you're just looking for easy targets to intervene stated facts by users and discuss with them with the help of google. once you say something emotional/psychological and state it as fact, you're gonna be my target. easy as that

I spent a painfully long week with the game to get the answer to your question, and still have no idea what's so good about it:(

You actually mentioned everything that makes a good game in your question. It's free (so everyone can play it), it's easy to learn (but hard to master if you aim for success in the competitive scene), it's fun to play with friends (and that's why people play stuff like Wii-Sports aso.) and trough all of that (and some other stuff like low minimum-requirements, agressive advertisement aso.) it has a shit-load of players.

DotA 2 might be a bit superior in it's gameplay-depth and the tech working under it's hood, but the community is shitty as fuck, it's hard to learn and it will cost you money. So I don't think that DotA 2 will push LoL form it's throne as the biggest MMOBA and I also think that that's not the spot Valve are aiming for.

I know that I did that. That was the whole point of the post to create some obvious, but so true facts that probably have led to the success of the game.

its free. i dont see anything else thats that attractive about it. what i dont understand is, are all the people who watch the game people who actually play it? cos as a casual gamer who doesnt play the game, i find it totally incomprehensible and insanely boring. and no it isnt because i cant understand it. i picked up sc2 enough to watch and enjoy streams in like 2 games.

the whole genre seems weird to me. but o wells to each his own.

ps: also correct me if im wrong, but the individual games in tournaments are like insanely long right?

LoL is mostly played in Bo1 with only later stages of the tournament being Bo3. So normal round takes up around 30-50 minutes. In later stages it obviously is arund 1 1/2 to sometimes even 3 hours or longer (I think LoL has yet to see those crazy ethernity-games like there were some between asian teams in DotA).

And no it isn't boring to watch since in LoL you have nonstop action starting from around 10th or 15th minute and before that there is still enough to watch for (surprise ganks or smaller clashes on the lanes).

There were several games between asian teams that lasted for several hours, that's the only thing I wanted to express with "crazy ethernity-games". In LoL I didn't such long games till now.

im sure its "action packed" for someone who plays the game and understands whats going on. i dont. so either the commentators are usually really really bad at explaining the significance of whats going on, which i assume is true anyway since mostly what they do is just talk about what spells were just cast, or ur just mistaken. or possibly both.

It's just not as spectator friendly as Quake or StarCraft. You need to be familiar with the game to understand it even a little bit and you need to have played quite a bit to understand all the underlying strategies.

league of losers is a fucking disaster to both play and watch. The fact that this game is the most popular e-sport says ALOT about todays gamers. I wish valve would put their resources to good use instead of making dota 2 which is exactly like dota 1.

How can you say that the DOTA2 community is shit when it's still in closed beta? I'm sure it will be free, both due to the demands of the market, and due to their wild success with TF2.

And i even got the chance to watch a pro while asking him questions, etc... Games are uninteresting and boring... i mean fucking 1 hours long matches? And there is like 15 minutes worth of intense moments, the rest is staring out of your head, clicking on creeps waiting to collect enough gold...

I think because of the nature of a standard game being very long, players probably sit in front of a computer longer than other games and hence more zombie like. In Quake live duels are fast paced and require fast thinking and only last 10 minutes (not including overtime) and you'll notice QL players are more active mentally :D

Fatal1ty stuffz became pretty good in some fields (like motherboards for example). Kids have no idea that they could buy the very same Asrock mobo a lot cheaper without Fat's logo on it, so the brand is slowly becomes "connected" with quality.

They are just building up a trend where the masses are imo.

He's been sponsoring GAMERS and TOURNAMENTS since 2003

United 5 Call of Duty - CPL
inevitable Fate - CXG (Hands out cash to players)
Zen - $1500/month for PK Tour + Travel/Hotel
Stermy - $1500/month for PK/Quake4 Tour + Travel/Hotel
Toxiq - $1500/month for Quake 4
Fojji - $1500/month for Quake 4
Sponsored World Series of Video Games (Quake 4, etc)

Throwing giveaways on his site for best frag videos, etc

Now giving away $14k for League of Legends.

I don't know any other gamer who has done all this for gaming and all you guys do is hate.

He is the ONLY GAMER who DOES THIS!!!! PERIOD!!!!

Get your crap straight, because Fatal1ty cares so much about eSports growing you don't even know!
