Running Scared - I liked it a lot despite the fact that Paul Walker is in the leading role.

Fracture - Anthony Hopkins in his element. A nice thriller (not quite up to his performance of Hannibal Lecter but it's a decent way to spend an evening).

Mr.Brooks - Similar to the TV series "Dexter". If you like the series and haven't seen Mr.Brooks, give it a go.

If you're looking for recent ones: Moon, In the loop, Gomorra.

Moon was definitely the best sci-fi of 2009, can you believe it only grossed 5M$ in the US? In the loop was original and funny without any corniness as you'd expect from a UK comedy. But I was kind of hoping for more from Gomorra, I don't know what I felt was missing though, maybe one needs to read the book.

Probably Moon was too complicated for Americans to enjoy

Un prophčte is great indeed. I agree Festen is absolutely hilarious, you should try seeing "Klovn: The Movie" if danish movies are available to you and you haven't yet. And speaking of Denmark everyone needs to see the Pusher trilogy. Dead mans's shoes was pretty hardcore albeit terribly depressing, my friend loved it. When it comes to recent uk drama/violence I felt "This is England" was better though.

foreigners might be charmed by the little stories and bizarre settings :)

The actors and director really pulled off a realistic atmosphere, several ten+ minute scenes with lots of running dialogues from an uninterrupting single camera angle.

Imo one of the best movies of the last ten years: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It is a slow but absolutely beautiful character-driven movie with stellar performances by Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck, and by the rest of the cast as well (Sam Rockwell in particular). I don't think watching it on a computer screen will do it justice though.
Other not necessarily recent and not very famous movies that I liked: Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (you'll enjoy it if you liked Snatch), Rounders, To die for, Office space, Shotgun stories. Also "Control" and "It's all gone Pete Tong" which the Anonymous poster mentioned, and "Un prophčte" which deotrip mentioned.

Rounders would be pretty bad if it weren't for John Malkovich IMO

C.R.A.Z.Y is awesome :] unforgettable story and thought-provoking approach to the problem of adolescence. And such a lovely music.
I've watched it with my class as a part of the extra-curricular 'cinema academy' last year.

Paranoid Park has blown my mind as well. That film was the beginning of my journey with Gus Van Sant, which I personally find one the greatest directors of our times.

Do not take as a act of polish patriotism to inform you but I strongly recommend films from K. Kieslowski, such as a "Short film about killing" and the trilogy "Three colours". Polish cinematography simply disappeared after his death in 1996.

You think The Road as a movie is depressing, try the book.

Requiem for a Dream is pretty sad as well.. The Road is just so hopeless, in any and all situations. There is no bright side. At. All.

I didn’t find it depressing at all, just a little sad. Also, like cloned already mentioned had bright sides. The end was somewhat happy and also when they found the huge amounts of food. At the end, I was thinking that this can’t be happening and that they will eat the kid, because of your comment here :P. They didn’t eat it and ended well.

Requiem for the dream on the other hand, is not even sad, it is just plain depressing. There is nothing positive in the whole movie, even at the end. It gets worst and worst for all the characters as the movie progresses. And the sadness u feel has nothing sweet in it. There is no comfort in watching it from the safety of your home. Even the “I am legend” was more sad than the road, being the last human alive and having only a dog for a company. The Descent and the “Never let me go” are also very depressing, but nothing comes close to Requiem.

That’s my feedback after watching it yesterday from curiosity after reading the comments here. It was a good movie nonetheless.

Yeah but Requiem for a Dream is very changeable, at least from my perspective. All the characters are victims of their own various addictions. It is horribly depressing, but I never saw it as unchanging. The Road, on the other hand, is in a world that literally has no hope left, not one shot for change in any way. Sure, the ending was a small sparkle but still, just fuck.

I like Good Will Hunting a lot and I intend to watch other movies by Gus van Sant, actually that's why I watched Paranoid Park in the first place. But what did you like about this movie? It hardly had any dialogue, there were some long scenes which served no purpose.
