If you write it using cyrilic alphabet its p. or py6. in short, no real difference. However, this prizes are in roubles/rur/py6 whatever you wish to name that currency, it'll still stay RUR :)

Of course they can't and aren't the same. Whoever wrote original news about this cup didn't expect misunderstanding. That's russian cup, so obviously its russian ruble (RUR/RUB, not BYR, which is belarussian ruble).

The russian word for rubles is py6/\b. In this case it was abbreviated with simply p.
The fact that p. seems to officially stand for BYR is quite irrelevant because quite frankly noone uses that currency, even in russia.

Erm... why would they ever use Belarusian Ruble in Russia? That belongs in Belarus.... As far as I can see, they still use it there.

it's not really a symbol like $, RUR still got no official symbol atm so p./py6.are used which are basically abbreviations of the word rouble in russian(1/3 first letters and a dot).
as for BYR it got it's official symbol like 5 years ago or so, 'Br', but it's still not commonly used, since all people call it rouble instead of "belorussian rouble" and still abbreviate it as p./py6. just as in Russia
Even in Ukraine, where the rouble got replaced by UAH aka hryvnia when USSR got dissoluted a lot of ppl still call them roubles in 2011. And eventhough it also got it's own symbol in 2004 like BYR everyone writes hrn.(well, in cyrillic it's like rpH.) which is an abbreviation.

When I looked up for "p." it was actually the short symbol for the BYR in some old ISO, hence my great confusion!
