Look, I am rubbing it in, and the reason is simply that your comment gave the impression that you believed that you are about as good or pretty close to Cypher in skill, and that the reason that he dominates tournaments is that he is confident on lan and not bothered by bad monitors, while you are pretty equal to him online, even on fairer pings which you in your own words had seen when he played from central Europe.
You took some practice games and got things twisted, Madix.

If you really thought that monitor adaptation and confidence is the biggest difference between you and Cypher, that is maybe one of the reasons why you rest a pretty good player, but not more than that.
You need to understand what your opponent is doing to compete against it, and Cypher is and was always playing in another galaxy compared to you, which you apparently did not realise.

For me, saying that there is a big chance that someone who's proven to be one of the world's best player will lose against players whose average tourney result is somewhere at the bottom of top16, "even if he'd move his shit to nl", looks pretty much like an undue claim. And basing this claim on a couple of wins in unimportant games is making it in an overbearing manner, because we've seen numerous times how top players can easily lose games that don't matter to them, so you can't assume that winning such a game gives you any authority to judge that player's skill or decide who he can or cannot beat.

People look at his online games and say that every time before every major LAN, but you have to be realistic. Cypher won only 2 or 3 major events in QL, you shouldn't forget that there are other people that can easily challenge for 1st place too.

I just find it funny he calls me if22 when he was the one running away on ztn and when playing against a player of his level, he is camping behind a corner waiting for the enemy to come, and when he hears him, he will show himself for a second and land a rail or do load of damages with shaft before hiding again behind that wall. Most of the time they are taken by surprise and can't respond to it.
And he does this VERY frequently.

Well, the good thing is that when you start sounding like a worse 2001 wheat ( oh hai this is radio, let's say you have no screen imma say everything I see kk ? ) you just CAN'T do anything but improve right?

I'm not a very good Quake player but I feel that I do have a decent understanding of the different styles and techniques of the top players. Tried to give analysis on the strategies, tried to supply some info / background on the players, but it's hard to think on your feet (especially when you've been playing / casting SC2 exclusively as of late). Also, it's really hard to do solo-casting, I'm more of a color commentary guy at heart.

So yeah, excuse excuse blah blah, I'm trying to get better :)

the 2 real problems are the tone and the flow, you really sound like a tired wheat or the girl that used to cast some q3/q4 matches : describe, describe more, same vocal pattern repeating again and again.
Watch some more esl stuff or old things shoutcasted by joe, he's probably not the craziest player ever but he's got it nailed down.

And you actually improved, you didn't bore us to death with your " upvote us on reddit, lovely reddit " thing this time.

No i don't think i can do a better job, well actually i easily could but It's not something I want to do. You shouldn't take that kind of attitude of "oh they volunteer so i'll put them on my stream", in the starcraft community for example commentators who have no clue about the game because they don't even take the time to learn it just get shut out. If your commentators don't want to put the effort in to actually learn the game and know how to commentate it properly without saying obvious shit then you can expect more comments like this, especially if someone like Ischju does Dreamhack.

Fishstix clearly has no idea about duel or the EU scene for that matter, he's too busy spam updating his twitter about some shitty CA match coming up on QL.tv. Rofl at the comment about avek being nervous when he's 8-0 up on dm13 9minute mark vs winz. This type of shit just makes me turn off streams. Literally.

You should just tell everyone who ever wants to cast that you don't want them to state the fucking obvious for 10 minutes, and instead put some effort in and provide some insight (do you really see 2gd actually doing play by play or saying what's happening? No, and that's why everyone loves him). And if you decide to completely ignore mine and others comments you'll slowly turn into holysh1t, a bunch of clueless idiots casting a stream who everyone makes fun of and doesn't take seriously.

Like I said, this is a learning curve they are on atm, how about showing some support?

What exactly do you want me to say? They fill the stream up with state of the obvious play by play shit constantly, and I HAVE tried to tell them this, multiple times on IRC, so don't give me that shit. Doesn't take any kind of brain power to know that people don't want to listen to play by play state the obvious bullshit. Funny how different the attitudes are in each game and then you compare the community size and you can see which one obviously works better.

Oh and i don't have high casting standards at all, I don't even mind listening to people like slasher and wheat, because atleast they actually try to do something other than just what we see on screen, lol.

Fishstix isnt that great atm, but he can get better.

He should talk faster. Quake is fast, to cast it you need to talk faster. He gives the impression he has very little to say so he must slow down and say the same thing over and over to make up for the silence. For instance, he says that av3k is top 5, top 3 even, and that entire sentence for one little idea takes like ten seconds to articulate.

I'm just surprised that fish seems to find it difficult to find something to say when there is always *something* going on in Quake Live, there's always something you can say.

Then he overuses words like positioning and either overanalyzes or misanalyzes various other things. This wouldn't be much of a problem but the cast quality is rather lacking. Less pauses in the dialogue, more urgency/emphasis in your tone - think 2GD, who talks very fast, or Joe, who gets "excited" when something exciting happens.

So to recap:

1) Talk faster and cover the action when it happens. Sometimes you are saying something (e.g. "av3k goes to pick up yellow") but it takes you such a long time to say that single thought that in the mean time av3k takes an LG fight and you are still saying that he is going to pick up armor. This is the biggest problem - so many times I hear you saying ("cooller is going to have to take it slowly and play backwards") and before you can finish that sentence cooller goes aggressive, and you decide to finish the sentence anyways. Speaking fast and quickly is the only way to make it work ("cooller is going to have to take it slowly *start speaking faster and with excitement* but instead he decides to go aggressive on gohlink and manages to take him down with only 30 points of health !!! *exclamation and emphasis in your voice*)

2) Try to avoid stuttering. I think this is something that you wouldn't need to do if you talked faster.

3) Emotion and emphasis. You sound like you're reading a fairy tale to a child - this is casting an action-packed quake match, get excited, put some emphasis in what you say, talk faster during the action, talk slower during the downtime. If I can do an analogy to your QLTV counterparts jehar and greased - greased talks slowly and that's fine for the downtime, jehar talks fast and that's what you want to do when there's action. You on the other hand seem to just be laid back all the time and talking very slowly and apathetically.

Keep in mind fish that this is meant as constructive criticism, I'm sure the community appreciates your efforts but we would like to see better quality in certain areas.

Comments like this are always welcomed, not just random bashing of x and y caster.

I agree that fish comes across in a kind of awkward way. It honestly seems like he's trying too hard to sound knowledgeable and he gets caught up in awkward word choices and sentences with generally no flow. And you're right, when he's trying too hard to articulate something and force it, it takes him a long time and it sounds contrived. I feel like if fish focuses less on trying to sound extremely knowledgeable about quake and, like you said, over-analyzing really obvious things ad nauseum, then his casting would gather some flow and it won't come across as dull (harsh word, I know). That being said, I really do appreciate the effort he, and everyone else, puts in to making the streams more enjoyable for us. Just relax and cast, and don't try to force it. Drop the pretense. Don't focus on being knowledgeable and over-analyzing every little thing. I support you, fish!

Stop scaring off fishstix. I like my stream/vods with some sort of commentary. Though he can definitely improve his casting overtime (coming from SC2 and with no prep). Hope your finals went well :p

Btw. i liked most of commentary, not ESPN like but was ok .
And doesnt matter what they screw up sometimes, they do it cause they love this game and for community and community should apreciate it either you like it or not cause noone is forcing you to listen or watch but you have that OPTION duo their efforts and those efforts are sometimes rly big !!

i didnt know why i would even bother watching a stream without commentary, especially if its an esl tournament, cause they do the bestest job with demos. id rather watch them a couple of minutes later in perfect quality and with my very own precious demo cfg...
so bigup to all of you casters/streamers who make watching the game so much more enjoyable!
fishstix was always my favorite sidekick casting with greased and i think every caster agrees on solocasting being much less fun/ more difficult than having a co commentator. so props for doing it! <3

the difference is that he has an english accent, meaning he probably lives or lived in the uk, unlike regular non-native speakers who just sound totally different. i just didnt remember his name and this is the first thing that came to mind so people know who im talking about.

I have lived 4(!) months in total in the UK hence my "British" accent. My native tongue is still German and that is what makes it quite challenging obviously. I can also pull of a "normal" German accent but I reckon everyone would just stop watching the stream :D

I have studied Linguistics/Culture for 3 years at a Danish University and I have also written my BA Thesis in English. The point being, my English skills are quite good but it always depends on the topic. And while I cast it can be really upsetting sometimes when I can't seem to find a good way to describe a giving scenario.

You see, in casting, as you should already know, it is really hard to plan anything because you have to analyze and comment on the flow.

Thanks for mentioning those because I try to get better. Trust me! I usually re-watch some of the vods partly to figure out what I could have done better and what phrases I should have avoided.

And yes, I still think I am a better TDM/CTF caster but I've started to enjoy 1v1 more and more. I've been playing TDM for like 8 years thus my experience is really a lot bigger than compared to duel. But I am working on that. I've been playing more and more duel lately. Hell, I even played vs draven yesterday :P

Casting alone and having to commentate a game that is extremely onsided requires some cajones. I can of course always find something to talk about but sometimes shutting up isn't that bad after all.

I think sometimes some people underestimate how hard it is. I guess it is easier for a native speaker because he would not have to worry about the language part. But for me, it is really a challenge and that's what I love about it. So bear with me, give me feedback and I'll try to make you happy. ;)

qldt works awesome here (Linux box), just make sure to have no spaces etc. in file names.

Would also like to say, I have been completely OUTPLAYED by cypher during that game and I must say it has been a very long time since I have been schooled this much.
But really, I wouldn't have spit on a 3 hours of practice before our game vs cypher, like he had, maybe i couldve made a couple more frags and prevented a couple of others.

But as I said, he remains cypher, a guy for which I have a lot of respect and Ive been admiring for years. I would never look up on him, as you intend, and it is sad that you think so and that you feel the need to spread that false statement of me...
