Someone I knew said they were put in a cell for the night in texas for speeding.

I think some remote parts of teh US cops have their own little rules in the outback.

All sound a bit "Deliverance" esque to me.

You have to pay >1000$ and license taken for a few month for that here.

Thats only in Switzerland. Almost everywhere else they can let you off with warning or you can bribe them. Not to mention that in Poland if you get caught driving without license, you have to pay around 125eu, so there are people who continue to drive even after losing one.

That's kinda scary, given he was caught doing 98 right?

taken from my journal here a few years ago....
By the looks of it this was in cali too (though he sounded texan)!

Must say the cop was much nicer to me. I love how the cop went from hard-ass to complete c**t when he realised they were German :).

Me and him would probably get on well yeeee haaa.

I don't think you get it, you are letting your latent hate for Germans get in the way.

He was actually taking the nice route, he found out they were trourists, he was aware that they are used to driving at such speeds.

He had every right to pretty much end their vacation there and then. Yet, he let them go with a warning. Nothing wrong with scaring them a little to make sure they won't do it again.

And also wrong.

It's not like that in Germany, they rarely even stop you, they just shoot the picture and find you afterwards.
Same as the Swiss and the Dutch.
They will also send the forward letter with the fine to other countries. An American told me that one of his subordinates got a letter from Germany to his home in the US. :P

Of course, if you don't pay whatever they sent you, they will put you in jail if they stop you in their country (usually only in the next two years).

Haven't been caught in other Western European countries, yet, or know anyone who has, so I couldn't say what they do :D

I have heard the Romanians do confiscate passports when people can't pay right away, which is a why a Romanian i know had two passports so he could keep driving :P

I saw a flash every time on the way to Mainz every time, I think somewhere on the E3 (is that from Arnhem->Overhausen?), happened every time at the same place so I think it's a camera checking for speed or something? Never received anything

yes A3 is from Arnheim to Oberhausen. According to this site: http://www.verkehrsinfo.de/index.php?menuselect=2&UIN= thre seem to be fixed radar traps between Oberhauen and Mainz. ,

And if it was, maybe the pictures didn't turn out usable (no number sign in it) or another car blocking the way.
Or it wasn't even you who sprung the trap. Could also be that the amount you went over wasn't big enough to consider it worth the trouble. I couldn't say.

All I can say is that I know dutch people who got mail from Germany, and Germans who got mail from the Netherlands.

why would the Romanian police confiscate the passport of a Romanian driver?

also you can pay the fine on the spot without extra complications ;)

what my colleague told me, is that his dad did have enough cash pay the fine on the spot, so they took his papers to make sure he would come to the police station and pay it later.

But now that I think of it he might have said driver's license instead of the passport :/

Anyway, another colleague found out that pulling out a business card that says "PETROM" on it works, too. Didn't even have to pay the fine O.o

the "autobahn" line is very common when a German is caught speeding while abroad.

Firend of mine who was an exchange student in Rhode Island and got cited, but there was the reference to the Autobahn.

And another German got caught while driving after a few beers drunk. That would have been a real problem, because he cuold have been expelled from university and sent back to Germany for that. The cops know, told him and let him of with a very clear warning.

So, I wouldn't call any of that xenophobic. Just a cop who knew what he was doing.

Once I was working in CA finishing a project, and on my very first week I was pulled over. It was late night, I was driving very slowly looking for a parking place, and perhaps I was suspicious for the cops.
I didn't know the rules and I attempted to to exit from the car to ask the cop what did I wrong. Both cops jumped out from the car and took cover behind the doors, both took out their guns and pointed at me. Yelling "stay in the car, stay in the car!" and "put your both hands out of the window now!"
They yelled very loud and angry, and .. iirc I got a bit scared about the guns:)

Seing as your were at the brink of being shot a little scare is alright.

The weird procedure when cops stop cars probably stems from the slacking gun laws still I am amazed every time I see that on tv by how stupid it is. I bet more people get killed because of this artificial dangerous setting then are saved or whatever

I don't think he meant ass rape by that last phrase btw, maybe he just meant guards/other inmates would rough him up.
