Setting up the final and waiting was even longer than the final itself. Rapha played very well but I wonder what happened on dm13 considering Rapha had full control in the start (RA, MH and YA)

T7 was a good game, guess rapha's rockets really helped him out in some crucial situations when Av3k was in control.

There were a few crucial situation where avekkk lost it on t7 in my eyes. People are talking about his slow entrance of mh-ra tunnel and lack of ammo. Sure that was important be he'd already lost full map control by the point due to eating some of raphas sick rockets.

Particularly one moment comes to mind where avekkk hastily jumps to mh as rapha exits in tunnel and eats a rocket direct. Totally unnecessary if he had just waited...

There were also several times he went from the upper GL to look down towards RG/YA and ate several rockets from rapha spam. These rockets took all his excess armour away and equalised the two players.

First off, bo3 10 minute games for any event Grand finale is just not acceptable! Although I'm very happy with the outcome, it's an injustice to quake live viewers and the players themselves.

The way the spawn system is in quake live, just doesn't allow a player enough time to do what they need to do in 10 minutes, and thus the matches should be at least 15 minutes.

Secondly, quake live rules!

I was double streaming lvl HQ and Gamesports.de, and also keeping an eye on a few other streams. There were close to 4k viewers on lvl HQ, 800 on GS and over 800 on lvl LQ, and that is not counting the other streams that also broadcasted this event.

With that being said, there is room for improvement. I myself loved the way IEM was broadcasted. We got to see the crowd, the promoters, the shout casters and the players. We really could feel as a viewer, the atmosphere they were creating inside the hall. So please, bring that type of fun back.

Thirdly, rapha is a freaking machine!!!!!!
Av3k is a highly skilled player, and somehow rapha still destroyed him. OK, destroyed maybe harsh, so I'll just say he beat him. Watching how rapha played dm13 was like watching some old film of Grand Master Garry Kasparov intimidating his opponents by staring them down before destroying them. Well done rapha, you rule!!!!!!

I'm telling you guys. Rapha is the quake god. If only he started duel during 2000 with zero4 and those kids, he'd have destroyed them also.

ZeRo4 knows this. Cooller even acknowledges his skill. Av3k and Cypher don't like his playstyle.

He's the real deal.

His timing is solid. His weapon combinations are always perfect. He hits clutch shots like its an everyday practice match and his strategy and prediction is at fucking clairvoyant levels.

If you watch the dm13 game rapha hunted Av3k down almost the entire time so not not much +back. Also on t7 av3k got 3 quick frags and rapha had to again hunt him down so there was really no +back during the finals except for the last minute on t7 where rapha pulls out his pwnrocket and Av3k runs mindlessly into it. IMO av3k had a chance and blew it with his frantic style of play he had to know rapha already knows what he is going to do, and thats why Rapha is #1

Oh yeah, there's nothing really wrong with +back. It's just the easiest way to play out of control. The other player can't exactly charge in like av3k tried many times because they just get a rocket in the face which nullifies any advantage they have and allows the other player to counter-attack. That seems to be how Rapha plays it. Cypher goes for the "do damage little and often" hit and run approach, Cooller tends to go for the "challenge big items and stack YA" approach whereas Strenx and av3k go for the "I'm gonna do so much fucking damage to you I can counter-attack off the spawn". It's just a case of the +back just works best 90% of the time

It's just irritating to play against someone that +backs the whole time and can be a bit boring to watch the build up till a possible counter. That's not to take away from Rapha's play because as mentioned, he's playing to win

I think 10 minutes are killing the game, such a low scores. There is probably one chance to comback on every map, lets say somebody is breaking control in ~ 5-6 minute of the game, if he doesnt make a mistake he will get it, but mostly its look like this player who wants to tied the scores is rushing straight into rockets of leading player. 10 minutes make ql a chess, I know you will say ql is more tactical now, its not wrong, but also what is wrong with tl 15 besides of more chances to comeback?

I am leaving on holidays now, so I cant reply you anymore :) sorry for that, what I said is just my point of view.

difference is, rapha won athens, and toxic didn't play quake for years and years before it. if rapha was at 70% there, toxic was at 40%.

it was kinda obvious that strenx let stermy win the last map yesterday, especially with the last frag. if stermy DID school strenx, which he didn't, rapha would have been out after 1st group stage.

regarding strenx; ask 2GD about how tight that group was, strenx according to 2GD could go through even with 2 losses. So strenx threw that match? no fucking way. or else it would have been a clean 2-0 win for stermy. ask strenx what he was doing.

I don't have the info on all the matches, cuz like you said a few days ago they were played at the same time.

Toxic had been focused solely on Q4 for almost two years before opting to not make a serious return to Q3; he stated in several interviews that he much preferred Q4 over Q3 and had no desire to return to the older game. It wasn't until apparent boredom sank in after the Q4 events stopped that he showed up in a few online games just weeks prior to Athens. No one rationally expected Toxic to do well at Athens.

I didn't hear the cast, but I'm sure Jay was likely referring to pre-Q4 Toxic, who was improving in duel at an alarming rate on the way to becoming a serious threat to the top of Q3.

Concerning Strenx, don't base your argument off of Jay's comment; he was wrong several times concerning group advancement (cf. the drama that began with Slasher pointing out Jay's errors). In a best case scenario for Strenx (Avek 2:0 > Rapha, Strenx 2-0 > Stermy), he still would have been tied w/Rapha, but eliminated because Raphe beat him; it was impossible for him to advance.

But because most people weren't aware of Article 7, Rule (c) which limited the application of tiebreak rules to involved participants, Strenx obviously thought he could knock Rapha out by losing to Stermy. However, Strenx has petty pride. Anyone who's been around for a while recognized that he was trying to keep the match close in an effort to show his dominance over Stermy while simultaneously taking the necessary steps to eliminate Rapha.

He even stated as much before that match, suggesting that all of his hopes were on Avek to win the event (thus implying he would contribute to that end in whatever capacity he could). This is reinforced by the fact that he blew both maps to Stermy by one frag, particularly the last one where he charged in the last seconds, firing his LG at a wall instead of at Stermy, while he won his map without hardly breaking a sweat. Strenx deliberately lost that match under the false impression that it would further his agenda, but kept it close to preserve some perceived reputation. Unfortunately for him, his understanding of the rules was flawed.

But it doesn't change the fact that 2GD don't know that rapha did face toxic once. This is the topic, and it's massage totally lost becuse people are pointing out(like you, no offence) toxic wasn't in shape. This I am totally aware of but that wasn't the point I was making.

I questioned him, not only for lack of knowledge(tho this is a rare thing) and also the focus on how good he was in his q4 days.
He also claimed he was better than fatal1ty, but fatal1ty was better at winning... or something along those lines. I never care much for q4, so I never noticed him in that scene, I do on the other hand remember dahang, av3k, cypher being fairly good.

But I clearly did go about it the wrong way as people here started focusing on the map scores and if strenx threw that match against stermy or not.

So to just clearifying this...

Ahhh, I missed the final. Wasnt about to stay up/get up again for avek vs rapha. (Probably would have Rapha vs Cooller =D)
Anyway, ggs players! Thanks to trance and others for the streams!!! Things were somewhat on time and it was very nice and the quality was superb. Thanks to calipt for giving great insights to the games yesterday and thanks for slasher for just keeping his mouth shut not escalating the flames of the high school drama 2gd. Im sure I dont know the whole story and i dont care too, enough is enough man. And on the few games i watched on the other stream slasher did a very good job shoutcasting by himself and was not monotone by any means. Overall great event.... even though it was on shitty monitors.

See, this is why I dislike av3k, there where ATLEAST 2 people that probably have over 50% chances to defeat rapha at this tournament. Av3k threw them out, but he cannot win againt rapha EVER with his playstyle. He is just playing into raphas hands by defeating the opponents that can beat rapha... Av3k actually won the tourney for rapha so to say.

Why do they even organize these tournaments?
Was Bodzo or Sl1p really gonna win? L1nk1n? His old amatuer partner Unity is better than he is. Is anyone else anywhere near as good as Rapha?

Do you people see him timing items and playing perfectly, dominating with the upperhand almost 100% of the time?
Why is this even considered news?

Cooller's old school and there's someone firmly better than him now. Does anyone actually think those whiney "Razer" kids are gonna defeat Rapha in a pressuring final with their unorganized playing styles? Way to go for Stermy, he has a simple config and he's just a great player.. but he didn't even finish top 4.

Rapha's consistency is untouchable. The only person who has beaten Rapha in something huge recently was the other American, DaHanG in late '09. Gratz to him as well for his top 4 finish.

Everyone else at a "pro" level needs to keep trying, though. We need people to keep beating.

Who won Winter CPL in late 2006? CZM.
Was there a serious tournament from Quake 3 after this? No.

When did Quake Live even have tournaments? 2008.

When did Rapha start placing 1st in a bunch of major tournaments? Throughout 2008.

America owns the Quake 3 / Quake Live active time line.

Exactly. The shit's so predictable, practically even in perfect order.
Those 5 and maybe Stermy should be in their own league. Having said that, again, even the order of those 5 or 6 is obvious.

I don't even see why the other players are invited.
Quantity doesn't equal Quality. So the events are boring and annoying.. that whole "well-no-shit he's owning him right now" feeling every time you watch.

Great event! I loved everything, except for one thing. Two group stages.

I really hope ESWC and other tournaments realize that group stage for eight top players is absolutely ridiculous. It causes a triangle of matches, where winners are decided mostly on map loses, not total wins. When you have 16 players, sure, group stage works great. But eight?

I mean, Stermy beats Rapha, doesn't advance. Cypher beats Cooller, doesn't advance. Not only that, the final matches of some groups determine who advances and who doesn't, and also seeds. So all it takes are two players who are good friends, and matches can be very rigged. Strenx vs Stermy if I recall correct, Strenx couldn't advance even if he won. Had he of let Stermy win 2-0, stermy would of advanced. Same with Cypher vs Cooller.

Anyway, I hope that kind of situation doesn't happen again. They should of just been thrown in either a single elim bracket or double elim bracket.

I also would love them to bring back a double elimination bracket with a LB final against WB superfinal! I also think the semi finals should have been Bo5. Playing Bo3 to decide the next world champion is completely farcical.

Bringing back famous maps like t4 and the legendary hub3aeroq3 would play so nicely in QL with reduced rail damage and faster paced games. Perhaps for the final match they could have a Bo7 superfinal covering the entire map base of ztn, dm6, dm13, t7, t9, t4 and hub3. Now there's a truly mouth-watering prospect for all of us quake-loving action junkies =)

I have to say, I felt slightly robbed today with the rather methodical 2-0 victory from rapha, albeit he was very impressive.

Whats your problem with t4 and hub3? They're both awesome and make for fantastic demos.

I can't vouch for t4 but within the professional community there is a growing desire for the return of hub3aeroq3. Everyone knows how incredible it would play in quakelive. Slasher mentioned it briefly in the VODs but it appears to be heavily frowned upon to even speak about it.

You know, it's pretty funny that rapha wins these tournaments this easily when he claims his favourite maps are actually t4 and hub3.
Imagine the domination he would have with my preferred map pool =)

T4 was and will still be an instagib map despite the nerfed rail. It's needless to say that provides *in my opinion* an overall shitty gameplay. I always hated this map and always will.

Hub has too many teleporters, I dislike T9 for the very same reasons, even if spamming the tele is not as effective on hub as it actually is on T9. Hub is very frustrating movements wise, it's not open enough, you can't jump twice in a row without hitting one fucking wall and that's a terrible feeling.

Of course that is my opinion and I'm fully aware most of people likes both maps cause they provide, oppositely to dm13, a lot of actions and therefore are fun to watch.

T4 is not an instagib map. Yes, rail plays a crucial role in that map because of the vertical vantage point. As shoutcasters (2GD specifically) point out that what's more important is to constantly cause damage and win confrontations, even if not kill around crucial items, justifies why rail belongs in that map.

Any taller or extremely wide map will always have rail so that you and your opponent can't just jump out of their dens like hideous mugs, look at each other, giggle and then run away to hug the next pillar.

Oh, I wasn't following quake back then. I think the systems used in the last year (4x4 groups into quarters, i think quakecon was straight double elim) are fine, every game can count, 9-16 get 3 games, and the seeds/brackets make sense.

I disagree. The logic behind the second group stage is that we get to see each player more thoroughly tested, ultimately rewarding the greatest overall performance. Each player is guaranteed at least three more matches with two more for those who advance to semifinals, in contrast to D/S elimination brackets which guarantee just one or two matches minimum and four at the most for any player.

Possibilities including "would ofhave" and "should ofhave" are most thoroughly investigated via groups vice brackets.

While it's true that unscrupulous children with an agenda can sway advancement (I can recall just one successful instance in quake history that mattered), but most players seem to have more integrity. Besides, it's moronic self-victimization to cry about not advancing because someone else drops a map; the obvious answer is that that player should have won more in the first place. Each player controls their own fate in any competition.

The intended benefit of the double group stage plus elimination bracket format is to provide the greatest number of matches and help to more absolutely stratify players. For this, other formats don't come close. However, I do agree that it is more effectively applied in best of five format, but bo3 works in a snap when time is constrained.

I slightly agree with you on some points. Yes, it provides more matches, which is great for spectators. Yes I'm happy I got to see a lot of players play a lot of other players, especially at that level.

But, I don't agree a player should advance out of a group because he lost ONE map in a match where he won. It's BO3, you're sole concern is to win that BO3. Most players have a weak map, that's understandable. You can lose that map, yet win the other two, thus getting a match win. Why should one map punish a player like that? It's about winning a BO3, not trying to win 2-0. Having group stage with eight top players changes the priority from "I have to win this match" to "I have to win this match 2-0". Tournaments have never been about winning 2-0, it's about winning a set.

My main point, it's not fair to the players.

You've got it all twisted, but I'll clarify for you. Here's the situation after the second group stage and how the rules were used to break ties:

Avek, Stermy, Rapha @ 6 points
Dahang, Cooller, Cypher @ 6 points

Avek 2-0 > Stermy 2-1 > Rapha 2-1 > Avek.
Dahang 2-0 > Cypher 2-1 > Cooller 2-1 > Dahang

a) Higher number of points obtained in all the group matches;
***3-way tie at six each.

b) Higher number of points obtained in all the group matches played among the remaining tied participants;
***3-way tie at three each.

c) Higher maps difference obtained in the group matches played among the remaining tied participants;
***Stermy and Cypher are eliminated because they failed to win a map in the matches they lost. As you said yourself, most players have a weak map. These two were punished for not taking advantage of that, ie, not winning enough as opposed to losing too much as you suggested.

d) Higher maps difference obtained in all the group matches
***This rule wasn't necessary, but let's ask "what if?" For this rule to be needed, there would still have to be a tie after application of Rule (c), which would require Cypher (Noctis) and Stermy (Strenx) to win their last matches 2-0. The resulting map count would be as follows:

Avek 5-3, Rapha 5-2, Stermy 5-3
Dahang 5-2, Cooller 5-3, Cypher 5-3

Here, Stermy/Avek and Cooller/Cypher are still tied. Neither are eliminated yet because the next rule is...guess what....tie-break matches! That is, even more matches to watch and an even more fair outcome. So it seems that the only "punishment" imposed by these rules is for not winning enough.

I don't see how this is unfair to anyone. Instead, I find it to be the most equitable and entertaining for spectators. Hmm, I sarcastically wonder if that's got anything to do with why the ESWC format was so popular amongst spectators in the past when all other tournaments were some combination of DE/SE? ;o

One of your main arguments is that we as spectators get to see more 'matches' in the double group stage format. This is true in theory but double group stage produces a helluvalot of matches that don't even affect the outcome of the tournament. ie neither player will advance. Or one player can advance but the other cannot so has nothing to lose (ie strenx vs stermy). This in my eyes makes a match far less interesting than the double elimination format where every single match has the potential to decide the tournament champion.

Double group stage yields a total of 15 spectator matches. 6 from Group A, 6 from Group B, 2 from semis, 1 from final.
Although many of these matches will have little/no bearing on the rest of the tournament.

Double elimination format (after an initial group stage) yields a total of 14 matches. 4 WB round 1 matches, 2 LB round 1 matches, 2 WB round 2 matches, 2 LB round 2 matches, 1 LB round 3 match, 1 WB final, 1 LB final, 1 WB/LB superfinal.

Every one of these double elimination matches can produce a future champion hence I believe it to be the superior tournament format for spectators and players in QuakeLive.

My point about more matches is that it allows us to remove more unknowns; ie, "who would win between playerA & playerB?"

Concerning garbage matches, there were only two, one from each group--Cypher/Noctis & Stermy/Strenx. That means 14/16 (88%) of group stage2 matches had an impact on the outcome of the tournament.

Plus, I'm sure having concrete results in the "excess" matchups is appreciated by the community; that is, ask 10 specs prior to the tournament whether or not they would like to see Cypher vs Noctis or Strenx vs Stermy during the event and I'm sure the majority would be positive replies.

There was a tie between Fox and Dahang, but Fox beat Dahang in group play, so the tiebreak was straightforward. I don't remember a controversy and can't imagine why there would be one. The two first place group winners (Cooller/Cypher) each received byes for the first round of the playoffs, leaving the second place group finishers (Rapha/Fox) to take on the counterpart third place finishers (Dahang/Avek).

Nevertheless, I meant that every event with group stages (most typically ESWC) produces at least one tie necessitating application of the rules. It just wasn't a very complicated tiebreak at the IEM finals.

The most infamous groups tie was WCG 2002 where Cooller intentionally lost pro-q3dm6 to Ni3 (these were 1-map matches) to knock out Zero4. In the end though, it was Zero4's fault for dropping his match vs Logan, which invited the tiebreak situation in the first place. The fact that Cooller had that possibility to influence advancement was a flaw in the rules at WCG, in my opinion.

strenx had the theoretical chance to advance but only with the help of av3k having to beat rapha (score don't matter)

after groupstage 2 round 2:
av3k 2 wins
rapha 1 win vs strenx
stermy 1 win vs rapha
strenx 2 losses

there could have been a 3-way-tie for 2.-4. if strenx wins vs stermy and rapha loses his last match

thats why he wanted to stay on the rapha-av3k server to determine if he has to try at all

I'm so rusty, that would require a good amount of practice and it doesn't seem worth it. :P

About rapha : He sure is one hell of a player but honestly I didn't feel like avek played his very best in the grand final.

Watch his games the day before against cooller, that's just not the same player. Against rapha he was fairly slow in his movements, his game somehow lacked confidence. It really looked like he was under too much pressure he couldn't handle in that game.
I'm not convince rapha's playstyle has anything to do with it, cooller has pretty much the same style imo.

If he had played as good as he did in the semi, who knows what would have happened.

I think the difference certainly was Rapha. The evidence is in the demos/vod.

Compare dm13 games as an example. Cooller was pushed into LG area for several minutes, but Avek was focused on sealing off MH and controlling the upper area, letting Cooller "roach" an almost constant 150 armor. His inability to put together a solid attack allowed Cooller to hesitate below LG-YA until Avek mistakenly committed to the upper exit over and over, giving Cooller position on every RA for about three minutes. He really didn't have a solid lock on Cooller's location the entire game, only hoping to outaim when Cooller challenged items.

When Avek did finally try to push forward, he lost MH. His only real attack during the entire game consisted of Cooller inexplicably running in a straight line out into the middle and getting outaimed. Ztn was much of the same: loose item control, Cooller worried about Avek's aim, and Avek bullishly attacking in straight lines; same outcome.

Then versus Rapha on dm13, Avek didn't get the favorable spawn like he did with Cooller. Rapha then did a better job of managing the item cycle and kept a strong awareness of Avek's location; how many times on that map did Avek seem utterly surprised turning a corner and being greeted by a rocket to the face? Avek has solid timing, but he didn't manage them very well in the semifinals and finals.

On T7, Avek took the early advantage and it's no surprise that he jumped ahead. But then he rails a freshly spawned Rapha and can't figure out how to finish the kill despite having weapons and ~100/100. Rapha almost immediately takes control of the entire map. Again and again, Avek loses track of too many items and doesn't really know where Rapha is. Rapha locks back into the major items and Avek's attacks become ineffective.

I agree that Rapha and Cooller's styles are very similar, but Rapha's timing, item management, position, and prediction are much more effective right now and he makes less mistakes than anyone. Avek played strong against both (dm13 start vs Rapha was unfortunate), but his item management and attacks fell short. Reflecting on the matches, these are the reasons Avek looked different against them.

well rapha earned this for sure, i dont agree with the people who say avek was not on
his top form because its never gonna happen. he is competing for the world champ
title and he has to be on top form there and he has to be able to stand the pressure..
and all these talk we make about how desperately we need toxjq, how incredible if
czm came back etc. .man this is so sad. i believe what both qlive and the community needs
are not new maps ffs we need new pro players, new faces new competitors and at this
rate it seems its never gonna happen..

It's not that av3k wasn't on top form, it's that he can't play his style versus Rapha and he knows this. Rapha doesn't let you get away with any mistakes, ever. You can't just catch rapha with strenx lg or cyphers rockets, that doesn't work on him. The man is fucking Teflon coated, nothing sticks to him. He's just that smooth.

He's like Batman, he has a backup plan for his backup plan.

OK guys, VODs are finally up, the last one is processing as we speak. Sorry for the delays, we hit a few snags with some of them because we couldn't stop the recording to separate the VODs (long story).

So you will basically see, Day 1, 2 and 3 VODs as one big VOD, but you can jump in the file's time line so it should be ok. One of the Day 3 VODs (part 3) failed during the upload so I will have to re-encode and upload it tomorrow.

Thanks for the vods, and I enjoyed the coverage. After watching/listening to a few AND I know it's been said many times, but listening to Slasher? oh my: the fumbling around with descriptions due to overexcitement, all the jarring "OOOoooooo" ing during tense moments(which completely detract, NOT add to the interest) and just his sometimes confused delivery --- all in stark contrast with Calipt's terse, analytical and emotionally restrained cast...I know the point of having Calipt "backcast" was to give a ql pro's deeper background details to the continuous foreground activity, but there were periods when Calipt WAS doing the moment-to-moment casting and doing it WELL.

++ Calipt: imho, one of the reasons he casts SO well is directly because he's NOT trying to be a caster and ambitiously inject himself into a match. He's duelled all the top players, and politely gives short, concise insights into their play. Calipt is simply a natural, as if he was casting Wimbledon!

-- Slasher: I'm not one to simply trash somebody, but I think he's in somewhat of a sad situation. He seems like he REALLY, desperately wants to be heard casting, and unfortunately his flow, voice (inflections/resonance/tone/diction) and tendencies to fill silences all add up to a rather unpleasant listening experience.

If he's as ambitious about casting as people here describe, then he should do what everybody does who works in broadcasting -- take some classes in TV/R, voice work, etc. Like any other "performing art" it's a craft to be learned.

cooler practising a lot = 1st
cooler practising a little = 2nd
cooler barely playing at all = 3rd
cooler being placed lower then 3rd near impossible
