This format was used for UT2004's UTCL and it was awesome.
I think it had even LAN playoffs.
Didnt take longer than any normal 4v4 tournament.

i've played too much cpm in my life where tournaments never end :P maybe q3/ql is more organised.

2v2 is nothing like 1v1. Terrible idea.

I know, thats why you need a balanced team for example team1 in my post, noctis is great for both 1v1 and 2v2, zyv is a great 2v2 player and killsen 1v1.

I cant see why it wouldnt work. Since 1v1 and 2v2 is quite different in wc3 also and the format works for them.

Think it would be a nice format from a spectator point of view with a good mix of 1v1 and 2v2.

Hey, 5v5 works in CS, so we should do it in Quake and WC3.

Since you have to practice 2v2 differently than 1v1, you can go on like this with absurd extra rulesets, and none of it is justified. 1v1 or 2v2, but at no point should they EVER be combined.

5v5 is a bad comparison cause it isnt played at all in quake or wc3, but 1v1 and 2v2 is played in both wc3 and ql. And furthermore its mostly the same players who play both 2v2,1v1 and even 4v4 or ctf in different cups.

wcg always had a nation based 2v2 tournament after their duel competition was finished

I'd rather see a proleague style league for quake.

duel bo5 with different players the first four games and a decider game with the top players from each team.

jo, i was gonna post the same thing a while ago, that'd be really awesome, but it'll have to have some sort of system to prevent all-star teams, as that'd happen instantly.

a committe of some sort(no fuck off AGP you guys are worth shit), that'd rate people depending on how good they are, not how good they've performed the last year or so, but actually on how good they actually are, giving out a certain cost for each player, a basic seed system with top/high/mid/low tiers.

and make a draftsystem. captains to pick players and starting with a certain sum of 'money' to pick each player, sort of like the teamliquid fantasy proleague.

top tier players like rapha/cooller costs 10points, whilst less good players like madix/k1llsen would cost less, with a regular draftsystem of each captain picking one player and it goes around, pretty easy and sure doable if enough people would be interested, but again its quake, won't work.

Just pick captains who know the scene and have them select the players they like in a draft.
Sums would only lead to problems, for example if players change the amount they practice.

But yeah it won't work cause players even drop out from single competitions often enough. So, you'd have to have some sort of payment to keep them interested...

idea with ratings was that it might be worth more picking two mid tier than a top tier player, and so on. but sure, could drop the whole idea about that

I agree with everything that has been said. I've fantasized about how something like PL could be setup for quake and also thought about a draft system with points to prevent all stars.

I don't think it would be a bad thing for quake as a competitive game to organize players in teams. and there's no need to limit the size of teams to just five players. double that number and teams would be hard to get in a situation where they couldn't compete in a match. with a good coach who would plan out games and practice accordingly we could even see teams with "lesser" players take out teams with bigger names.

I like the possibilities. would be fun to see how something like this would turn out if a proper organization would arrange it, for instance esl (again, NOT agp).

true, but yet each team wouldnt want to play unless they can get their 5 top players, like always. but if that could be prevented by setting set dates with no chance of postponing or wildcarding, it'd be great.

I'm not sure about the match-ups being preset though. it's good for practicing against a certain players style. and there would be no fuss in deciding who picks their player first.

For Quake, I think winner's league rules would suit it better.

say each team has one top tier player, so they play each other in the first game, then said player dominates four lesser guys and that's that.

the thing with pl format is that we get more diversion in the match-ups. and teams can't abuse their star player.

but it would be more interesting seeing teams prepare for tournaments, for instance if 1 team has cooller then all the other teams would study his demos and try different gamestyles that could possibly beat cooller's, so there would be a high chance that someone beats him, and then its an interesting fight between the rest of the players. imo it would be much more interesting to watch, there would also be less periods where 1 single player dominates all the others and there would also be more sponsors/team interest in quake, since team games means more money for the org.

I like the idea, it would be like the Davis and Federation cups in tennis.
