Hi guys!
I am thinking about buying a new graphics card, but I am not really sure which card I should buy.

My PC: Opteron 185, 2 gigs RAM, Dfi LanParty UT nf4 D ultra (nForce 4). 500W Fortron power supply.

I was thinking about 4870, since there is a really nice price/power ratio, but then I read somewhere, that there could be some problems since I have an nForce chipset. I am not thinking about crossfire (which is not possible on nforce anyway) or sli, I just want a single card. So, does anyone have an ATI card with nforce? Do you think there might be some problems?

Btw I know the cpu might actually slow the card down, but that I don't mind, just need to know if I get full power without problems if I get this card.

It'll work fine. Would save myself some money and get the 4850 though or even an 8800 GTX.

Beware of high op temps and loud fans though.

It really depends on the kind of games you'll be playing. Most things will run fine at high resolutions with fancy graphics using a 4850 (it's what I have), and it's pretty cheap now.

its complete bullshit that an nvidia/ati (or vice versa) combination wouldnt work, no difference in performance either

if I were you I would get a HD4830 + aftermarket VGA cooler (can even be passive)

Actually, Ati graphics card don't perform that well on nvidia chipsets, which is mostly a driver issue. Right now I have a 8800 GTS 640MB (G80) that performs perfectly well on 1680 with medium-high settings. I will get the Gigabyte Passive 4850 soon for my silent setup. It's not really faster, but has more features and well, is silent.

Some guy offered me an unused card for second-hand price so I took it :x It works fine, but I have problems with some weird lag-like phenomenon. I get 80-100 fps in games that I play but the games have this really weird and unsmooth feeling. Some people say it is because of XP SP3 and I think it might be because of the LCD monitor. When I use v-sync it gets a little bit better but the game is then really slow and the mouse feels "heavy" :/ Sometimes I feel like buying a CRT again.

dont think its XP, thats still better than vista afaik
is this since you replaced videocard and nothing else changed? and in all games (different engines)?

Yeah, since I replaced the card. I reformatted the whole system and installed new XP SP3. I think some games don't do it, but the others yes and the worst is Q3a.
