Imbalanced in what way? Sure technology wins in long SP games, but it's not really that unbalanced. If you find the game too easy, there are plenty of difficulty levels.

the smaller class warships are not useful either, the optimal strategy is to skip straight to a battlecruiser. frigates have token uses as a mind control blitz and masses of frigates can be used to crack low tech star bases and creatures. the middle sizes have way too little HP and the high tech sizes are way too slow.

the major problem with the game as a whole, to keep it very simple, is that costs scale linearly when they should scale exponentially. if you look closely at starcraft and warcraft 3 they do scale exponentially, and if you look at the old c&cs and warcraft 2 they do not, which is why the high tech units hilariously shit on all the low tech units to the point they were not worth building.

all of these are easy to find and download, use dosbox with a frontend or get amiga versions of some and use winUAE. beneath a steal sky use with the scummvm emulator http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php its available from the scummvm website itself as well as a few other games, make sure to get the cd version as that contains the speech in audio and not just subtitled.
some of these will also work on hand helds if you have either a nintendo ds or sony psp.. scummvm available for both and also amiga emulators that work quite well depending on game, or for games like flashback could try the mega drive/snes version on emulator.
