Dude, Conan is so repetitive. Absolutely every single show (in the last year or so) starts with him 1. saying 'settle down' or something similar to the cheering audience, 2. make a remark to someone clapping/screaming in the audience (i.e. some popular remarks: 'thank you sir. always the guys, never the girls', 'thank you sir. ok, that was creepy',....) 3. mentioning 'we have a great show today. a great show.', 4. when Max was still around he would always ask him how he was doing and then make fun of his answer,...
He's a great host, but if you've watched 10 shows, you've seen all. Now I just skip the monologue, because I already know what he's going to say. Letterman is far more interesting and unpredictable. watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKSxHYK_wfs Conan isn't anywhere near this guy...
I agree with the first part of your post. The intro and his little moments of "stepping back from the role as a host and make witty remarks demeaning himself" gets a bit repetitive quickly.. but I suppose it's his thing and it's a part of the show, ergo the viewers expect it and never gets old for them.. but whatever really, Conan is about more than that anyway..
And most hosts have that thing in the beginning of each show, a few selected and well worn words, specific movement followed by saying that the tonights show will be a good one, and sometimes even commenting on the fact that they keep saying that every night..
if you keep getting annoyed at such things you probably should start looking for the show beyond that, or stay away from them :P
How common is American entertainment across the pond? I know the UK has tons of good native programming, but how many US shows do you come across on Swedish television?
Atleast here, in their neighbour nearly all of the scripted series are American (or British/German). The reason is simple, it is much more cost-efficient for broadcasting stations to buy licenses of quality American shows than to try producing some cheap crap by themselves.
So our television consists possibly from the same Losts, Prison Breaks and Desperate Housewives, only with some delay (localization, etc). Nowadays bittorrent and sharing is very widespread aswell amongst the youth and young adults so they download American series from the internets and watch it on their PCs.

If you like that you should watch "Game On". it's from around 1997 and pretty funny for most part. Very polically incorrect and really worth a watch I promise.
private german television has a lot of the us series ... house, csi, law&order, heroes, prison break, scrubs, desperate houswives, grey's anatomy etc ... you name it ... it's definately somewhere.
we've got 2 (and some extra bullshit channels) run by the gouverment or w/e you call it and they make their own shizzle. i mean, it's not like politicians works there its just that its free tv channels that everyone can watch and its payed for by tax money. anyhow, on that channel its 100% swedish made stuff i'd say.
then we have other channels like "kanal 5" which is privately owned, kanal 5 in particular airs alot of sitcoms and it's like 90% from the states i'd say..
feel free to check at www.tv.nu if you're really intrested :)
Wow, that's really interesting to me. I had no idea American TV was so widespread. It's funny cause I'm more interested in anything coming out of Europe, even if it's not as well made as American TV.
American TV to me is so generic and dramatic. Like the show Lost is basically a soap opera on an island. It's all gushy-gushy human emotions... or even all the reality TV in America is the same way.
The best mainstream TV show in America is The Office and that's pretty much a British creation. Arrested Development *was* great, but they canned it because there were too many running jokes that you'd have to be watching the show from the beginning to understand.
Metalocalypse, Harvey Birdman, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force also rock my socks, but besides that all American TV = crap.
link pretty much laid it all down.. to me, there are very few programs i would spend time on watching.. there so many bullshit shows bought from (mainly) the US that gets remade into as equally sucky swedish versions..
i probably spend 1-2 hours a month watching swedish tv on the actual tv, and 3-5 hours watching selected downloaded shows..
daily show, colbert report, real time with bill maher, sarah connor chronicles, heroes, the 4 major animated series (south park, family guy, american dad and simpsons) and occasionally a leno/conan/letterman episode greatly depending on the guest.. that's pretty much all i watch -_- .. edit: oh, and some top gear as well..
Indeed, not surprisingly however, people dismiss any interest in the show because of the title and genre. IMO Battlestar is the best TV I've ever seen in my life.
And how about that Gaius Balthar guy, that's one lucky bastard. If I was in the role, I wonder how many takes would they have to take from certain scenes :)
Did you ever watch The Outer Limits by any chance?
and yeah, most of the US produced shows are bought here a few months after their "success" has been confirmed in the US.. most of if not all of them.. split up on a handful of different channels..
even daily show has made it's way here, subtitled and all.. and i'd say it's a tough show to find interesting and get into if you're just a random casual swede with no real interest in the US political scene etc.. but what's nice about it is that you don't have to be well informed of events happening in the US to at least find jon stewart funny
tbh, i find that both jon stewart and steven colbert aint really that funny. bill maher has alot better jokes and sketches if you ask me, and at the same time, his show can sometimes be quite serious, although its pretty left leaning.
Imo the guests have usually been conducted of one vocal populist, like a rich actor trying to revive one's career by preaching pro-human rights/environmental message; some "political scientist" taking an intellectual high-ground but giving nothing to the table, and some republican symphasizing "oh noez gay rights, evolution etc" old fart.
i'd say "real time with bill maher" is a good example that a show can be a comedy show but in the same time be a show with true, honest and most of all freely spoken discussions.. all of these political satirical comedy shows make fun of the news media, but only this one can let the final sentence be a real opinion/advice/plead rather than a joke that leaves the viewer thinking and not laughing..
it's absolutely not entirely about "dumb and brutal right-wing lobbyists and politicians" even though i see your point.. and besides, I'm not sure of how much of the material the hosts really add.. also, I'm mostly focusing on Colbert's performing rather than material here.. but surely one could say the material makes the comedian, but I'd say it's not necessarily true with the Colbert Report
