If your looking for "progressive" drummer in that category I'd recommend you to check out Virgil Donati. He blows Portnoy into pieces.

It's personal I guess, but i find his play boring in comparision.

Portnoy got the price for best drummer in the magazine percussion 3 years in a row if I remember correctly.
Im bringing this up, because you don't get something like that if you're a piece of crap.
Portnoy is one of the few metal-percussionists that can keep on playing complicated sequences all the time in their songs for such a long time, just check out how long songs Dream Theater have :D
Anyways, its different styles of percussioning (and different oppinions), and not a contest =)

I'm well aware that he's been awarded for being the "most progressive drummer" some times. That doesn't make him any more fun i my ears tho. Sure he knows his way around the kit he plays, but so does (sry for using this terrible anology) Yngwie Malmsten on his guitar. Agree....Portnoy is a fine drummer, but absolutely overrated. What makes me grin is his exaggerated over confidence as though he is indeed considered as THE most insane drumming talent having been inducted into the drummers hall of fame (for whatever that's worth), whereas guys like Donati, who play in virtuoso bands like Planet X, are absolutely not of this world. Donati's patterns are insane, not to mention his footwork.....and he doesn't need a 3 bassdrum kit either.

Bottom line : Portnoy is a so-called "rock star" albeit in the progressive vein and clearly loves the limelight. Donati on the other hand is a MUSICIAN and from my perspective, probably the best in his class.

I think that particular brand of racism isn't exactly the same as the type of people who actually hate other races, like nazis or whatever. It was my understanding that black metal is supposed to be a response to the christians taking the scandinavian lands oh so long ago, and black metal is for the scandinavians who want christianity out and paganism back in. So when he says black metal is for white people, I don't get offended by it as i would have if he'd said "Black metal is not for niggers/spics/chinks" etc. I hope that makes sense :P

Good point about the drummer looking bored. I see this a lot. This and a drummer looking like he's at ease while playing. A true master looks like he's playing without effort! Funny watching kids who are like gasping between blast-beats and covered in sweat and those who are laid back and just watching the crowd as they play.

There are technically great drummers (McBrain) and there are fast ones (Hellhammer of Covenant was really cool at Nexus Polaris) but i would say my favourites are Anders Jivarp of Dark Tranquillity and Daniel Svensson of In Flames. Black metal drummers all sound pretty much the same (to me it is) .The swedes surely show some serious skillz.

hmm inflames drumming isnt as tecnical as others, but not at all bad.

From my experience, there's a variety of different qualities that a drummer can have:

-Fast
-Technical
-Tasteful
-Timing (very indicative of the level of skill)

Timing is mostly reserved for those who play well live. I'd include in these: Hannes Grossman (ex-Necrophagist), Andres Haave (Blood Red Throne), David Haley (The Amenta, Alarum-touring, and Psycroptic -- he totally blew me away in concert w/ Alarum), Nick Pierce (ex-Faceless), Marco Pitruzella (Braindrill, Vornagar, Vital Remains-touring, Faceless), Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy), Tim Yeung (Hate Eternal, ex-Vital Remains). My buddy, a local metal DJ for college radio, would also argue that Chris Adler (Lamb of God) would be on the top of his list for keeping time.

Fast/Technical would mostly be: Tim Yeung, Marco Pitruzella, Flo Mounier, and some others

Tasteful, I can't say many except Opeth's former drummer Martin Lopez had extraordinary taste in the way he played.

The Tasteful category is a strange way to look at it if you ask me :P

There's a big difference between those who play blast beats for an entire song and those who know the correct time to.

I just thought the term is fairly subjective (I can see what you meant by it and Lopez fits that pretty perfectly really), but I can't thing of a better term anyway!

Yeah, good point with it being very subjective. I can't accurately define what makes it tasteful, but you know you can just feel it sometimes.

People always complain about triggers. It's not a big deal. It actually sounds nice on bass drums, I think.

Many extremely reputable players use triggers, (Vinnie Paul of Pantera for example! ). Playing live is playing to the crowd. Who cares if you can play without triggers and sound good once. Touring means you need to play these songs, on time day in and day out. This is plain impossible to do, especially for those heavy drinking, drugger bands out there. And doing it for 10 months at a time... just isn't going to happen.

However, I expect no triggers on studio albums.

Since i am a drummer myself, i got a pretty good idea of who is good and who issn't. And at this moment (as we are talking about metal) I would go fo the drummer from Fear Factory, he is simply amazing, even live, wich i can't say for most drummers.

And those people who are naming those mtv metal/rock drummers from good charlotte and system of a down.... lol, belive me there are realy much better drummers out there. You wouldn't belive what they can do with a drummer in the studio, they can make the wankest (is that a word? :p) drummer sound like he's a pro.

The first album was done with a drum machine because at that time The Berzerker was just one guy. He then assembled a band to play those songs live. The second album was done with the band.

The Drummer can do over 1200 bpm. At one stage he held some speed drumming record iirc.

Metal drummers are in general quite overrated if you compare them with jazz drummers...anyway there are some great metal drummers who also play jazz and even have a classical education(e.g. mike portnoy)
Anyway one of my favourite drummers is paul bostaph from slayer, as i watchen their dvd "war at the warfield" his style really blew me away.he seems to be sitting very still all the time while playing as fast and hard like not many others.
I also admire joey jordison a lot, he used to play in a lot of jazz bands in school and also later on...and now he is one of the fastest metal show drummers i know

Especially on the reign in blood and seasons in the abyss albums, Dave Lombardo is absolutely stunning. He was later switched with Paul Bostaph but PB's way of drumming was a little 'ear-scratching' in Divine Intervention.

Being a drummer for several different groups and doing studio work for a living my vote for today's metal would have to be Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall, Jason is a graduate of Berklee School of Music and actually did not begin playing metal until after he graduated from there, if you have to look at metal as a whole and no t just modern metal the best "metal" drummers would have to be Bonham, Ward, Peart, and Portnoy, not in any particular order. Some other drummers that should be put in consideration are Dave Lombardo, and Adrian Erlandson. But they are not anywhere near as talented as the aforementioned 5. Derek Roddy would also have to be put on this list, but he is probably the least respected in the drumming world out of the 8.

I know they aren't a metal band but you can't look past Danny Carey talent wise.

My all-time god is Danny Carey, not just because I'm a huge Tool fan but, face it, he probably has four brains or something to be able to keep that polyrythmic in his head (Haake is awesome at this too =) ). I love drummers who aren't just fast, or play the cymbals all the time just to make the most possible amount of noise, but who actually put some effort into variation and balance. I think Carey is the perfect example of this.

My second fav is Abe Cunningham from Deftones, not because he's technically brilliant like Carey, or fast as hell like Portnoy, but because he creates this kinda mystical drumming, with lots of little "drumrolls" in the songs (go listen to be quiet and drive). Totally suggestive, quite unique, and simply kickass. (When it comes to listening to drums on a track, I think be quiet and drive off of Deftones' second album Around the fur is my all-time favourite, it's just amazing and never gets boring.)

As a joker, I'd like to propose Jon Theodore, who used to play drums for The Mars Volta. Just like Cunningham, he's not super fast or has super advanced patterns, but a GOOD drummer is NOT the same thing as a fast/"overworked" drummer. Theodore has loads of musicality in him, which really shows. Give De-loused in the crematorium by The Mars Volta a try (especially Eriatarka/Cicatriz esp), and you'll probably feel just as I do =)
