Dunno, here in holland we have a 1st and 2nd christmasday. They are official holidays. This year 25 and 26 december ;)

summer where? south africa? awkward to think of South Africa being below the tropic of capricon, even. this being the winter solstice and all, and I guess I just imagine "Africa" (a rather large continent) as being well above the equator. funny how I see things in my mind.

Well africa is actually smaller than north america (continent) but about the same size as the USA. South Africa is probably about the size of Texas (plus another half) Note that South Africa is not a region, it's a country, the region is refered to as Southern Africa, and contains south africa, lesotho, botswana, mozambique, zimbabwe and namibia. (they're all rather crap) (in fact the whole of africa is rather crap except south africa)

Luckily I've always known pretty much known where everything is, probably because of the mix of cultures. We watch american tv mostly, but we all desend from europe or upper africa or india etc. The most recent immigrants that have been moving over are chinese and taiwanese and eastern europe like bulgaria and russia. From that you can see everyone comes from somewhere else.

I also guess that if you travel overseas somewhere you'll get a much better idea of the scale of the world. In my head I had a picture of a map, but until you're in a plane for ten hours, and then say, experiance a temperature drop of 20 degrees, you don't really get it.

Just think of africa as a clone of south america, they are mostly on the same latitude and almost the same size, and the congo is comparable to the amazon. (equator)

yes, yes, I know this. I'm a big fan of knowing what's bigger than what in area and population. I also know South Africa isn't a region. :P

I think I can get it. Obviously, I've never experienced it so I'm not sure whether it's clicked in my head, but I tend to have a good eye and imagination for geography. It was just the first thought that came to my head - being Africa appears on a map as a predominantly North-of-Equator continent, but I knew that parts of it were actually on a southern latitude. It's just how some things occur in my mind. I guess these 'instincts' might change, indeed, were I to travel to said countries and integrate the culture.

Nothing here in Edmonton, we're still getting + temperatures for daytime highs.
