Make sure the soundcard driver knows, that you connected a headphone.

Cmss 3d seems not to be able to work effectively if there is no sound card. I do not have it XD

I think the command works like this:

As long as the origin of the sound is in front of you, usually the sound will get played on both speakers, even if you dont have your crosshair pointed exactly to the origin of the sound.
When you turn your view more to the left or to the right, the sound will get played louder on one of the speakers and less louder on the other one.

When you increase the stereoseperation, the sound will be played even louder on one speaker and less louder on the other one. It should now be easier to determine, if the sound is coming from the left or right side of your crosshair.

However, I didnt try this command in ql yet, but in q4 it worked like that.
