i tried proper youtube embeds but it didn't work

What do you mean it didn't work? I don't see you use the youtube embed syntax when I look at your post? The current default format is Markdown.

I made multiple edits to both the main post and my first comment, but no matter how I adjusted the code I would just get plain text. You see how the second link looks and works like a link now? I couldn't even get that without the URL tag, it would always be just plain text.

maybe the post needed some kind of approval, or maybe it's something with my profile?

There was actually a permission issue. You see now there is a 'Format' dropdown? That was hidden before, and it was on the "Markdown" for your access level. I changed it to ESR BB code, which supports the [] tags. What confused me originally is that you left the plain http links in the post, instead of leaving them inside [ youtube = blah ] tags.
