The original Star Wars was pretty revolutionary, like the original Alien, but to the younger, more optimistic space saga hungry sci-fi readers. To younger audience, cheesiness is accessibility. Besides that, the stories are complicated enough, the scenes and 'obstacles' are intriguing. I remember re-watching the originals many times over as a kid. You're obviously not the intended audience. I wonder if you've seen them when you were younger and pretended not to like them? Do you really not see why it gathered such a cult following, considering when it came out and what else like it has come out in the same decade? Have you always been so anti-establishment?

More over, the saga part is important, because it creates an adventure in which the protagonist solves simple quests, which are mini episodes, while solving the final quest and having a boss fight that affects the faith of this universe. This distinctly engaging on a different level than trying to philosophically analyze AI, freedom, censorship. These later topics are important but are actually niche aspects of our lives. They are great to explore, but they can not be as universally interesting and engaging as an adventure story. For example, look at the popularity of LOTR.

I personally think 2001 is one best, and it's my favorite movie of all times. Solaris is great, and Stalker is good, Rublev is great, but a bunch of Tarkovsky is whiny shit. Let me start of by saying that Star Wars is not my favourite sci-fi movie..
But the way i see it, it set the trend on what you now recognize as generic sci-fi. Let's be honest movies before that time were just horrible compared to "modern" movies.

I wasn't too excited about the poster either .. it's perhaps a bit too old time-ish .. but it does raise the question why isn't mark hamill on the poster. I didn't read any conspiracy theory comments but i'm guessing it goes in the line with.. that he is on the poster and the movie just came to a full circle. Either that or his cameo is really brief.

Now as for the trailer.. you have to admit that it is good. The information available is so scarce that it actually makes people talk about what will happen in the movie. It's not like other trailers where they pretty much hand you the whole plot and you find it a bit redundant to even go see the damn movie.

The prequels were not appealing. The main trilogy is okayish, but by my current standards not that much exciting or as interesting as other movies are.

I am worried, that the entry ticket prices will rise up to like 20€, just because they can demand it from the fans, as much as the entry ticket prices for the latest Avengers movie were above average.

Star Wars is a series of overly long, boring films for children, with uninspiring and lazy story, boring one-dimensional characters and a ridiculous budget. It holds nostalgic value for those who watched it as children, but I can't imagine anyone who was older than 14 when they first saw it is impressed with it. Id rather play Heartstone than ever watch a 7th, 3h long part of that children's series

And later, se-series, and 1-2-3 episodes, looked mostly like f-king cartoons. It seems like Lukas sold SW to Disney in last 1990-th, but not a few years later.

I have a feeling This Stars Wars movie could be great, especially if they've taken into consideration the criticism over Episodes 1, 2 and 3. Eventhough I didn't find them so bad, especially the third Episode which in my opinion was epic enough : Yoda and Sidious going at it (+Windu), Sidious becoming Emperor, Anakin turning to the Dark Sides and putting on the suit at last. Don't really know what people disliked about Episode 3.

I wasn't a fan of the Star Trek franchise and knew very little about the universe tbh but the recent movies were also good in my opinion so I dunno if that's just trendy to hate on retakes of older stuff or smth.

The recent Star Trek movies have a bit more in common with Star Wars than Trekkies prefer. They are, and should be, two completely different vehicles.

The problem is that the Star Wars style of movie makes more money, and since the people who actually care about Star Trek and what it should stand for are dead, the people who own the franchise are going to go ahead and make dat money doe.

You should watch episode 3 again... And look at the acting and special effects.

Very few points to criticize at this moment. Going to my second viewing saturday january 2nd to see it again. Not to find points to criticize per se, but rather because it is that good.

Star Wars was the catalyst for my interest in science-fiction. The grandeur of its stage; the mixture of philosophy, politics, romance, and action; and its classical story telling were all appealing to me as a child. Though it were the books that really drew me in.

Every book, film, and game being a small piece of a larger narrative gave the series a special quality. It were as if I were peering into the history of another universe, and it enthralled me.

I now look upon Star Wars with fondness, and amusement. I haven't been able to re-watch the prequels in their entirety, and I'm afraid to look at the original trilogy again, lest my fond memories become so tainted.

The announcement of a new trilogy was met with indifference. The road had become familiar, and it was something else that I sought. Though I'm nervous for a new generation to see in Star Wars what it was that I saw, and not to look upon it with disdain, my time with it is over.

You should watch the old movies without any fear. They are tones better than these... jokes. They are immortal.

I'm not excited by those trailers and i have very little hopes, given the modern trend for sci-fi.

I liked the original trilogy, i even liked or appreciated or tolerated the new one, it had some good moments, many actually, but i think this new one will reveal itself to be the old beating of a dead horse, made mainly to make money given the strenght of the franchise.

The trailers already shows the direction is that one, there's only fan service and special effects (cool as much as you want, but the original trilogy is still enjoyable in spite of its paper boxes-starhips special effects: the story, the acting, the characters and how they interacted, plus it has to be remembered at its time it was absolutely revolutionary, even eye-wise; today there's nothing left on that side, and if you consider JJ "Strobe" Adams is directing it, with all the shaked cameras and everything else...)

Anyway even if it'll suck enormously, it will still be a success, the franchise is too strong and the vast majority of the "fans" have already stated they could watch 3 hours just of the millennium falcon and some "pew pew".

People go to the cinema first and foremost, it's a ritual, it doesn't matter to see what, you just have to go, that's the trend with any kind of movies.

I saw it this Wednesday. Very disappointed. It's an uninspired, derivative, hollow shell of a movie in terms of original substance, almost only rehashing safe old plot threads. There's perhaps only one saving grace, namely the female lead role. What a waste.

Yes. Without spoiling anything, the movie's fuel is to a large extent nostalgia. It's at 81 on metacritic right now, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it progressively fall lower than that. It's an incredibly generic and safe movie, with one big twist that you end up seeing coming from a mile away during the scene. I'm in genuine disbelief that the script was so poor. It'll end up making money though, so I guess the studio will be happy.

Opposing view to Naghokez, I absolutely loved it, and want to go watch it again ASAP. The only criticism I have is the "giant weapon" they have to destroy, but the story is mostly character driven, they could have had any other story going on in the background.

With regards to production, dialog and acting, it was excellent, and there is a lot of mystery towards the origin and future of the characters.

As a cinema experience I would rate it as the best I have seen in the past few years, apart from maybe Mad Max.

With regards to rating it to other star wars films, I think it's good, but will wait until I have seen it again to make a decision. Right now I would want to watch it above any of the other star wars films (well it's new duh.) I would tentatively put it on the level of ANH. I however love all the star wars films. (My favourites are probably Empire and RotS) It feels more like an OT movie than a PT movie, but also feels like a new era.

Before you read this: Please don't judge me... I'm just sharing my story because people asked...

Wow... okay, I wasn't sure if I was ever going to tell anyone about this, but it's late and I'm sleep deprived so i guess I'll just write it now and regret it in the morning :/

First of all, - just for some background: My mom died right when I was born, (she was actually really, really hot- but this isn't about her. I guess that's ****ed up to say, but whatever.) I actually grew up with my Mom's family, because my dad has all sorts of emotional issues and he bailed before I was born. So you can see, my childhood was really kind of messed up.

Anyways, growing up I feel like there was always a lot of distance between me and my sister. When I was about 17 or 18 I first noticed that my sister was a hottie.

I don't want to go into to many details about it, but basically what happened is that I accidentally found a video that she made of herself. I knew she didn't make it for me- but I thought she was so ****ing beautiful that I watched it twice. (probably would have watched it a hell of a lot more, except that like right around the time I found the video, all this crazy **** went down and I had to leave home. (My mom's family who I was staying with got in bad trouble with the law. I never talk about it).

Sooo... I was totally lusting after my sister at that point. She was also having bad trouble with the law. She was actually in custody when I left home.

My friend and I went to go pick her up. When I saw her that day, after seeing the video, I have to be honest, I just wanted to **** her brains out. Looking back on it now, it's pretty messed up- but I think she had feelings for me too. She actually kissed me right after we came to get her... and it wasn't a sisterly kiss, you know? I mean, it wasn't like ridiculously sexual or anything, but it definitely wasn't sisterly.

After we left, we all went to crash with my Sister's friends. On the trip there, my friend sort of implied that he wanted to get with my Sister, and I got a little jealous. He's a good looking guy- and even though she was my sister- I just felt like he was competition. Not much else happened between us for a while except some maybe-sexy hugging.

Pretty much everyone in my life at that point was wanted by the government, so we all moved around a lot. I'm not saying that I'm proud of it or anything, but it was kind of an awesome time.

My friend and my sister never hooked up I don't think- but I thought there was some serious sexual tension going on between them. It was around that time that I got really badly hurt in an accident. Wow... okay, I wasn't sure if I was ever going to tell anyone about this, but it's late and I'm sleep deprived so i guess I'll just write it now and regret it in the morning :/

First of all, - just for some background: My mom died right when I was born, (she was actually really, really hot- but this isn't about her. I guess that's ****ed up to say, but whatever.) I actually grew up with my Mom's family, because my dad has all sorts of emotional issues and he bailed before I was born. So you can see, my childhood was really kind of messed up.

Anyways, growing up I feel like there was always a lot of distance between me and my sister. When I was about 17 or 18 I first noticed that my sister was a hottie.

I don't want to go into to many details about it, but basically what happened is that I accidentally found a video that she made of herself. I knew she didn't make it for me- but I thought she was so ****ing beautiful that I watched it twice. (probably would have watched it a hell of a lot more, except that like right around the time I found the video, all this crazy **** went down and I had to leave home. (My mom's family who I was staying with got in bad trouble with the law. I never talk about it).

Sooo... I was totally lusting after my sister at that point. She was also having bad trouble with the law. She was actually in custody when I left home.

My friend and I went to go pick her up. When I saw her that day, after seeing the video, I have to be honest, I just wanted to **** her brains out. Looking back on it now, it's pretty messed up- but I think she had feelings for me too. She actually kissed me right after we came to get her... and it wasn't a sisterly kiss, you know? I mean, it wasn't like ridiculously sexual or anything, but it definitely wasn't sisterly.

After we left, we all went to crash with my Sister's friends. On the trip there, my friend sort of implied that he wanted to get with my Sister, and I got a little jealous. He's a good looking guy- and even though she was my sister- I just felt like he was competition. Not much else happened between us for a while except some maybe-sexy hugging.

Pretty much everyone in my life at that point was wanted by the government, so we all moved around a lot. I'm not saying that I'm proud of it or anything, but it was kind of an awesome time.

How can anyone with a brain switch off for 2 hours and watch a film which is supposed to take you to another dimension which talks about light and dark, good & evil, when its frames are riddled with so much reverse racism from the real world since the initial trailer?

When they don't give out roles to blacks cos of colour its an outrage.

When they do the opposite and promote it, its ok and you're supposed to sit there and ignore it and enjoy the film like nothing happened cos its not cool to point out what's going on?

Would rather watch older films from a time when the world had not gone mad.

Got no problem with black people in big roles, but when i see a film, its to switch off for 2 hours and immerse myself, they make this harder and harder, when everything seems to go through some kind of reverse racism filtration system.

I liked having the woman and black guy as a protagonist and not for any of the pc bs. I liked it for the same reason we get sick of seeing a handsome 10/10 actor on screen all the time. It gave a different and fresh feel to the film

edit: i kinda do have some gripes with the plot details. like how 2 COMPLETELY untrained ppl (the girl literally used a lightsaber the first time she faced the guy) can suddenly best a sith who has trained for years with luke and his sith master.

My only 2 major complaints with the film were they made (SPOILER ALERT!) Rey op as fuck and the film was too fast paced at times although i did like the new pace to it.

series kinda dropped off for me after the second movie.

Hated it from start to finish. Dialogues are shit, the new protaganists are shit, the action scenes are so blurry and full of "badass" effect they're going to be unwatchable in a few years.

Overrall it felt like a bad modern action film with a Star wars skin, got none of the star wars vibe/pace at all. But nerds gonna like it because of fan service

I loved it however I did have 2 gripes with it.

Kylo Ren wasn't strong enough, I know at the end they said being him along to complete his training but he still seemed pretty weak. At the same time Rey was far too powerfull and picked up the force too fast, why would she even think that her powers would let her manipulate people to do things?

The other was that half of the film was a rehash of episode 4. Alot of scenes basically ripped from the first movie such as the bar scene and attacking the new death star thing. But now that's out of the way the next 2 movies shouldn't follow this trend, unless were about to go back to endor etc.

Regardless I thought it was a brilliant movie with just the right amount of the old characters while adding a load of new ones and I can't wait for episode 8... and also Rogue One!

It actually wasn't very often, he never took it off during the first half the film.

The best interpretation I've seen is that the removal of his helmet symbolized showing his vulnerability and actual weaknesses.

It's only when he has taken off his helmet that (a) Rey can block his mind reading, (b) Chewie can shoot him with his crossbow, (c) Finn and Rey can wound him in the lightsaber battle.

I also think that he has that boyish look with the kinda silly looking long hair on purpose. It shows his lack of experience, it shows that he isn't the badass he pretends to be. He hides his true self (the insecure boy who's not sure he'll ever gain the amount of power he thinks he has a birthright to) behind the mask.

Rey could only see Ren's fears in the mind reading scene because he made the mistake of taking off his helmet. This idea was repeated when Ren stood without his helmet in front of Snoke and Hux came in. Ren immediately turned away from Hux in order to hide his "weak" face from him.

Yeah, me too. I would expect him to either not take his helmet off at all anymore or to have a vastly different and more threatening look without the helmet, maybe by emphasizing the scar across the face that Rey gave him, having a bald head, etc.

I think there's still quite a big character arc ahead of him which could very effectively be shown in his visual appearance.

- I loved sci-fi when i was kid - it contained more truth than official science and society could gave.
When I'd adult I left all these fairy tales for kids, and interested a real science and a real infinite World, which was more unbelievable and mysterious things only on our planet, than all "SW universe". I'd heard that executive director of Boeing said that they had something in their hangar that makes StarWars poor. Now, I'm clearly understand that He was right.
I'd watched new SW movie few hours ago. All i can say without spoilers - than creator's ideas are weak. Problem not in a not good enough special effects, or primitive human conceptions about Universe and technology. Point in that that they didn't made improvements in Universe, it's always has a Evil, as a inalienable part of Force which rule their imagination. It means that all their ideas are not completely harmonic to rule something, and able to born new forms of evil in mind. Yes, it's corrupted human genetic code which contains evil, and is dangerous to the rest of infinite Universe with infinite potential. And that's why Einstein was right, burying the human hope to conquest the Space, prohibiting the traveling faster than speed of light in his theory. Until humanity will be evil - it must stay on a planet, and do not even dream about others. There is enough good things on our planet to defeat human imperfection, and evolute more.

P.S> And i must admit a pleasant SPOILER that Annakin Skywalker - is not a new sith, as many people could decide watching the figure touching the R2D2 in a trailer, or a Ren touching the buried helmet of Darth Wader.

Since it was announced that episode 7 was not going to follow the expanded universe I was expecting the film to tell a new story, and in that I was thoroughly disappointed. Not only can one point out the similarities between episodes 4 and 7, but also between episode 7 and the stories told in the expanded universe. Solo and Leia's child turning to the dark side, and becoming a major threat to the Republic - the expanded universe has done that. The death of Han Solo - the expanded universe has done that. A Stormtrooper wanting to run from the Empire after a "moral awakening" - the expanded universe has done that. Another "Death Star" like weapon that the Empire's remnants are trying to utilize - the expanded universe has done that. In all cases, the expanded universe has told these stories in a much more interesting and entertaining way than episode 7 does.

The remnants of the Empire were portrayed as though it were Nazi Germany, but the leader is talked about as if he were the leader of North Korea. Nice propaganda... Then there's the female Stormtrooper commander that gets her own, unique, really flashy costume. Add in more female Stormtroopers, a funny black guy, a "strong independent woman" who reiterates how strong and independent she is multiple times throughout the film and it really feels like a bad comedy, especially with how Han Solo and Chewbacca interact with one another. The ending shots with Luke and the main character were just awkward, and that helicopter shot at the end was terrible.

The Stormtrooper redesigns looks silly. The vehicle redesigns just make them have a generic "sci-fi" look. Things were changed to make them look flashier, "cooler", but they just look sillier and absolutely forgettable.

The whole film is a disaster. I was bored halfway through. Its success only stems from the fact it's branded as Star Wars.

The whole Universe is just plain bullshit and implausibly - did a 6 year old brought this up?

- That ending scene was the only one that impressed me. It looks natural, a Master and an apprentice meet, and watching eyes to eyes each other. Without any word, but fully understanding - like real Force powered creatures. Watch their faces - they do not need words to communicate.

The whole series is such a pile of rotten monkey puke...reminds me of muppets in space but without a good story. when i watched the first movie for the first time like 20 years ago, it was confusing and boring and it got worse with every new film.

hehe honestly i tried to get into the whole SW thing but just couldn't. star trek is such a better option. i guess that's the reason some people like fantasy and some prefer alternative reality.
