Could be argued. Quite a few notable mathematicians in history were hobbyists, more or less. As to a more current example, Grigori Perelman refused to be a professional mathematician at some point.

Fact is, some think that the moment you're getting paid for it you kind of stop being a mathematician.

Could be. On the other hand I'm not prepared to call just anyone with a maths degree a mathematician.

True, though I always respect people who are good at the subject, it would be amazing to see the world through the eyes of a mathematician for a day and ask myself, is the subject a truth, or is it just another man made system designed to explain things based on the only way we can explain them, or whether its a truth which transcends different galaxies.

Does 1+1 really equal 2 for every lifeform outside of this galaxy, assuming it exists, which it most probably does.

If not then, probably everything we think we know about numbers is one giant, wasted misconception built on the assumptions of others and merely designed to serve us.

That would bother me as I would imagine the motive for every math guy is discovery.

I would rather put my time into something with a simpler, and more certain outcome.

Probably why I don't do religion either.

wittgenstein said most if not all philosophical problems were considered real because of language, and that he solved them with his theory on language.

Or something like that, I'm from the brave new generation that reads summaries instead of original works

there are philosophical problems, and he thought most of them were caused by language. it wouldn't be right call his works a theory, it's more like, in his words, a therapy.

You seem confused.

Math is math and not a science because whatever is in math has been proven.

The issue is never whether 2+2=4, it's whether this kind of arithmetic is relevant as a model for the real world in the particular case. Meanwhile, math is perfect, 2+2 is always four under the specific axioms.

Doesn't matter. Just meant to remind you, that money isn't a measurement of anything except money.

Just think Van Gogh. During his entire lifetime he sold exactly one painting, to his brother. Who bought it out of love. Does that mean anything? And now his works are being traded for millions. Does that mean anything?

Somebody being paid for anything or not has no relevance whatsoever. Except them being paid or not.

well... success is a measurement.

The people you listed had higher degrees of success than your average hired mathematician, therefor they were mathematicians. But for us mere mortals, being hired as a teacher/researcher is a relevant level of degree which might be meaningful to use as a distinction for who is a mathematician or not.

Then again, you've said before that you are an immigrant yourself (from Wales), that didn't finish high school, that works from home and that isn't able to buy a place of his own.

So with that said, as the immigrant you are, what's your contribution to England then?
Also, did you make Wales a better place (which is your logic) before being carried to England by your brother?
And most importantly, do you really believe that a morbid obese, poor and maintained 40 year old man, that is a compulsive liar, has better genes than, well, anyone else in the world?

You can't even tell the truth about my age without elevating me into my 40's.

And you talk about me being a liar?

Tell you what though, if I can prove I am less than 40 to an ESR head admin, will you give up your account on ESR to me?

If I can't, you can have mine, and I will transfer 2k for a ESR quakelive tourney?

Sounds good?

Now ladies and gents, watch how this big mouth south american who shares nothing about who he is (because that's always a good sign!), kicks scratches and bites and the most basic of tests regarding his integrity and reliability for discussing something as basic as a mere age, let alone anything else.

That's how easy it is to take care of this little bitch :)

I dominate him with better experiences of being a gamer.
he can't handle it and tells lies about me.
I then offer to prove his lie.
He then realises it will cost him his account (because he's a liar).
he shuts up, or tries to change the subject to a very simple offer.
I smugly walk off into the sunset.
he shuts up for a while.
Then the whole thing loops over again when he's going nuts.

Its all very amusing.
