I'm sure this has been asked before, but I wanted to try dabbling in some video editing, so what programs do you need to make a QL frag movie? I'm a complete beginner at this stuff. I have a new computer with Windows 8. ty

playing vs twitch (10 comments)

When I play Quake Live (which I think is the greatest game ever released) I get really excited and obsessed with the game, it activates adrenaline, dopamine, all that stuff, and I literally can't stop playing, and it ends up wrecking my sleep.

When I watch streams on Twitch it's a completely different experience, it kinda relaxes me since I'm not playing myself, and is a social experience aswell. It's like watching your favorite sports event, only you can chat with likeminded people at the same time.

Maybe it's an age thing, I dunno, but I tend to go for the more relaxing, social experience nowadays.

Do you think playing videogames could be an obsessive, addictive thing that even induces aggression, while Twitch is the opposite?

Quake at Dreamhack ffs (188 comments)

So they put Street Fighter in Dream Arena instead. I have nothing against Street Fighter of course but the tournament is at best half-assed with most of the worlds best players missing. In the Quake-tournament the best players of the world would all be present and Dreamhack has a strong tradition with Quake being a PC LAN-title not a console title like Street Fighter that have about a million other tournaments that are better suited for this type of game. Street Fighter had around 5000-6000 viewers on Twitch and the Dreamarena was mostly empty, certainly more empty than during grand finals of Quake. I know this is a pointless thread but just wanted to vent that shizz

Forum Remake (94 comments)
Posted by zerxez @ 17:11 CDT, 3 June 2014 - iMsg
I am of course grateful for this forum and the people that run it. However, how about a makeover? maybe some new fresh colors? Im sure this site has looked the same for many years by now?

Check these sites out, its the fighting game community sites.

http://www.eventhubs.com
http://www.shoryuken.com

See, the colors are bright and fresh. I am unfortunately really bad at web design, maybe the people behind esr would consider a makeover though, with help from someone?

Don't get me wrong, I will continue to use this site of course, even if it isnt updated. I just think a simple color scheme makeover would do wonders for this site.

why did Quake fall from esports? (208 comments)
Posted by zerxez @ 03:23 CDT, 27 May 2014 - iMsg
I was talking with some guys on qlrankstv chat about why Quake fell from esports, from having been a key player at the conception of esports, while CS and Starcraft managed to renew themselves successfully and keep their audience.

My take on it was that ID never realized the potential of esports and after Q3Arena they squandered their resources on engine development and lenghty projects single player failures like Rage.

Meanwhile the momentum from q3arena was wasted on outsourcing q4 to a developer that clearly had no idea what they were doing. The failure of Quake 4 stopped the momentum of Quake in esports dead in its tracks.

ID realized their mistake and re-released q3a as Quake Live 10 years after its release, but by this time they had already squandered their momentum, resources and chances, and the release went largely unnoticed, even though it was embraced mostly by the hardcore Quake community.

While other companies like Valve, Blizzard and Riot had a core focus of esports much earlier and managed to adapt succesfully to a new era of competitive gaming with huge tournaments broadcasted live on Twitch for hundreds of thousands of viewers.

grabthemeger claimed the game could never be as popular as CS or SC regardless, because enough people just wouldn't like it.

What do you think?
