I am not convinced that the battle royale idea is good. But i think it was a good thing if we could go back to Q3
because then we would be able evolve the game. QL is closed source.

The big problem in bringing back Quake 3 is that there is Quake Live which de facto is Q3 because there are all the players. To bring back Q3 we would need to take back control from QL. But how we do it? How do we convince all the QL players to come back to Quake 3?

In my opinion, i think people want to continue to play QL style Q3. Because that what they are invested in for the last 10 years or so. So i think what we would need is to recreate the whole QL experience in a mod. Same menus, same maps, same physics, same rulesets, etc. That way people can switch without having to get used to something new.

Letís imagine there is such a mod. Now imagine you wanted to switch to it. What would you expect to find? Empty servers yes. So there is this next problem that is the problem from before that all the people are still in QL and donít want to switch.

Next question is, how to fill the servers?

We could organize tournaments to slowly gravitate the audience to the QL mod. But that takes time and it is not sure if it even works. I think the killer feature here was if the QL mod allowed to connect to QL servers. Then it would be really easy to switch for QL players. But still now, why would people want to switch to the QL mod? For a QL mod you would need a legal copy of Q3, download the mod and install it. For what? For no advantages?

Thus the next question is, how to get people to use the QL mod?

You would need to stay compatible to QL servers as long as the people are still using the QL client. So you canít change anything engine-wise like physics or rulesets. I donít have a plan here but the QL mod could be better in the community features though. All the things that were said why QL failed. Letís say that is the way to go. So now we have to build features into the QL mod that are better than the ones from steam and letís say QLstats. You see the problem?

Summarized i think itís pretty unlikely that it can go back to Quake 3. Creating a QL mod that is compatible to QL servers might not be only technically challenging, because you have to blindly reverse engineer the closed source parts but also legally because i guess connecting to a QL servers without the original QL client wonít be allowed. Now take the time into consideration to do that. I guess like say 3 years? 5 years? 10 years? I mean itís closed source and its only a community development, nothing fulltime-ish.

And if you have that perfect QL mod, still nobody is using it, your work just starts by evolving the QL environment, because you canít evolve the game itself by now.

And imagine you made this, all the people play the QL mod. Now you want to letís say increase weapon respawn time to 15 seconds. What would happen?

Everything a highly unlikely story. I guess the only authority that can evolve Q3 is id software. But they will make Quake Champions titles from now on and left us with this stalemate of a situation regarding Q3.

So what can be done?

Bye bye money-wise poor people of the UK who thought being sold out is a good idea. Bye bye NHS and hello to chlorinated chicken. Will be interesting to see what other kind of deals the UK is be able to get. Merkel just canceled every Brexit talk. Poor Boris. (Ah not poor he will get some money from some rich people who will really appreciate the opening of the UK market to their products.)

And funny thing about Q Anon is, the people who are victims of all those new age changes support those people who benefit the most from them. By taking advantage of exactly you, the money-wise poor people. They are burning your dreams to get the most out for themselves. It is because you emotionally connect to those people and you start to think, you both are alike. Which is not totally wrong, you are emotionally alike, but the huge difference is, that those people are rich and they will get richter, you not at all. Your problem is, that you do not use your brain to judge the situation, you only use your emotions. And you feel that you were left behind and now you want to come back really big time. Playing an all in with really really bad cards. Pure desperation and you make it worse for all of us with your stupidity.

They play in Q4 because Sanchez would not ever play something else.

If Sanchez wins, Faye has the right for a rematch in QL. Sanchez can chose to not play the rematch in QL but then Faye does not need to pay him the 200$. Or he can take him on in QL, either winning another 200$ or losing his already won 200$.

Closed Beta will go down tomorrow (likely late Monday morning UTC)

The game will go down for the sake of the health of the team and in order to do some significant changes.

Open beta is when marketing will be scheduled.

With more competitive modes in the future there will be more replayability.

We have learned multiple things about running a live game during this period.


Weapon balance:

Netcode is clientside, rockets are too strong, and bouncy, once there are changes to the netcode it will be possible to balance them.

The Shaft's hit radius is smaller than in other arena FPS games, no knockback and is a little bit weak but this will also be easier to balance once the netcode changes.

The Shotgun will have a cone segment in the future (without starting from a single point) in order to manage its balance while being able to hit.



Due to the physics running at 500hz, while ground acceleration is a common value, the tickrate of the physics is affecting how people dodge in fights.

The Dodge mechanic is a bit too powerful for experienced players, which is making the game a lot faster. If its power ends up decreased a lot in the future then it might become possible to fire while doing it.


Game modes

The casual game modes were added in order to judge what the new players' experience would be like.

The Wipeout maps were designed for 5v5, but with 5v5 respawn times could get very large, the respawn times might be revisited or the respawn system might change. There aren't a lot of team choices in Diabotical, in open beta one thought at the moment is to spawn powerups that stay with the player for the whole round, they would spawn at 1 minute and then every 2 minutes, like armor, PnCR overcharge, ammo regen, in order to lead to teamplay in Wipeout to grab these powerups (this would be indicated in the HUD), the goal of this is to create reasons in order to have map control. There would be multiple powerup locations depending on the team size. Will be tested.


Gold Rush might be removed from the Arcade Modes and left in the Custom Game. Brawl FFA will become a special warmup mode.

CTF will be added to Quickplay in the future, James thinks that runes and grapple hook and CTF would make CTF a lot more fun like in Quake 2 Lithium mod.

James thinks that Arcade modes should have 1 or 2 weapons tops since some new players won't have to make many decisions about which weapon to pick since they aren't knowledgeable yet.

The Arena card will be moved to Competitive, along with a separate card for Duel and a Competitive playlist which will have multiple modes which is what is planned for the competitive screne.


Block height

At 1 block height there are multiple issues with the combat, which aren't as visible in Wipeout, more competitive game modes require more floor height variation so there will be a half block floor blocks which FireFrog will work on.



The shop has to be added which has already been worked on, there are 141 weapon skins already done by Rading



There have been some cheaters which has been made easier due to the client side nature of the game at the moment but we are happy with EQU8's detection of cheaters we just haven't done sweeping bans yet since we weren't sure about all detected cases being correct since we haven't locked certain parts of the game yet and wanted to confirm some detections see: Update on thecnical matters by FireFrog


Time Trials (the name of defrag/race in Diabotical)

Will come, we have spoken to some very good defrag players, and there will some changes to the movement and other movement physics options will be available


Closed beta going down

The game will be taken down in order to improve it and it will be brought back up from time to time when we want to test some new game modes. Alpha testers will also stop having access since there are very good players with access who could get a very big advantage now that the competitive modes will be worked on.


Open beta is likely to happen in 1 or 2 months from now, since we have reworks to do.

Some mappers might be given access in order to help with some needed maps.

There will be some mapping contests sometime after open beta with prizemoney.


For people that wish to support the game your will be able to buy thing in the in-game shop when it comes available in order to get something for yourself and help the game's development.


There will be some tournaments announced when the open beta comes, the competitive modes TDM, MacGuffin an Wipeout will be 3v3.


The Closed beta will end Monday 12:00 CET (noon), you can check what that is in your in your timezone here.

The term AFPS is wrong. As soon as people shoot each other in a computer game its an arena. Or is there a possibility to go out of that arena and do something else like not being shot?

What they might wanted to express with arena shooter is proper level design shooter. Proper in the way that the gameplay itself and the corresponding possibilities when designing a map are directed to give the player an interesting challenge.

In contrast to realistic looking level design shooter. Where the gameplay is realistic and thus the level designers have to live with only limited possibilities for giving the player an interesting challenge.

How close to reality is it to control a mouse and a keyboard and while watching an interactive movie? As opposed to using your actual legs to move.

Thus my proposal for a new term is at first, do not give proper shooters a different name. Call it FPS. Name the shooters that limit themselves to imitate patterns found in the real world a different name. Call them Realistic FPS. RFPS.

Hm but when i look at OW map design and the resulting so called gameplay. A lot of people shooting at each other while standing in two groups in front of each other. Guess thats spectator friendly.

The reason for this is Serious really weak shaft which is only 63% while Sanchez would have 100% because QC is a noob game compared to Q4

I want to share my knowledge and theories because i hate all the whiny players that are better than me. They deserve to lose really badly. They are bored when they are winning and start to cry when you frag them only once. Whiny little cunts. So i want everybody as bad as me to grasp these really simple tactics on aerowalk, be uncomfortable to them, make them cry and to eventually beat them. And hopefully be better persons than them afterwards. Do not cry neither as insult, neither by claiming that you have a bad day, neither by loling or any other way you could keep coming up with to take away as much credit as possible. This is respectless behaviour. Always congratulate your weaker opponent. Congratulate him when he is fragging you and congratulate him if he was indeed able to win! They deserve it because they had to work really hard for their result. A looooot of people cannot stand it when a noob is getting on top of them. Really thats shameful. Canít you get enough? My gosh. Let them have some fun too. You can do so by respecting their accomplishments and be happy with them! The next match you will most likely win again. Then your world will be whole again. My gosh really. One loss will not hurt sooo bad. Imaging how your noob opponent must feel when he is losing every time.


Beware this guide is for bad people like me against way better people. Where the pain gets to the level of frustration. So you need to take drastic measures and start to really think about a tactic and also to commit to it. This here is my approach.

First thing you need to understand:

There are two sides on this map, RA and YA side. RA side is map control side. You need to get there and important, stay there!

RA side:

1. Lower RL room: This is the most important position on the map. If you have it never give it back. From here you can see her/him and be on the right spot to interrupt him moving around the map. If your opponent got there then you better already be in the RA room.

2. RA room: The red in this room gives you the strength to defend RL room. Also when the opponent gets too aggressive you can go there. This position is stronger than the one at lower RL room. Never let your opponent be there right before the RA spawns.

YA side:

1. GL area: This is your base when out of control. You can escape quite nicely from all kinds of attacks. It takes a little practice and it evolves to an escape game. There is really nothing else what you can do there if the opponent decided to go aggressive. Also you can go to the top level through the teleporter or position for mega.

2. Upper RL: From here you can hear and see your opponent. You can hear when he picks up RA and also MH. Also it has nice defensive options. Be there when your opponent went to RA or is going to MH. From here you can also enter the RA room quite nicely. The higher velocity of the area before the little stairs down to LG give you slighter better odds in a fight.

Now here the tactics. Because you are bad you will be on YA side. This is the out of control side.

1. Grab GL
2. Go through the teleporter so that you can see RG (beware of rail shots when crossing the window with the bars)
3. Spam nades there to prevent him going through the teleporter on his side and spam some down to the terrace right next to his teleporter
4. Go to upper RL and before you expose yourself! throw some grenades straight down through the doorway where he will be next waiting for his chance to rail
5. Now you have some options. If he goes to bridge where RG is you can go to the RA area. If he goes to RA area you can collect the rail or position for the MH. If he starts to be aggressive, drop back to GL and play the escape game.

Here is a vid of how strenx does it:

The difference here is that he does not spam nades to the terrace but to the doorway. It really depends on the situation. The goal here is to give a starting point. Something easy to rely on.

Don't do anything else. Do not go over MH to RL. Do not attack RA from lower RL. Do not go through the teleporter at RG. It is not worth it. Stay save.

Finally when in control do the following:

1. Stay at lower RL and interrupt your opponent when he tries to get out of his basement.
2. When he passes upper RL to LG it is time to go to LG. If he gets RA he will be able to take map control by occupying the lower RL position.
3. When he is about to take MH, deal damage! Do not let him take it without dealing damage. If the RA is already up, deal damage and then back up to RA. If you let him take MH undamaged then its becoming dangerous.

Don't go to YA (most of the time). Don't let the opponent get to lower RL if you are not in RA room. Let them starve to death. They will get desperate and make a mistake.

If you lose the position to the insane fighting skills of your opponent, fall back to YA side. Do not make any of the mistakes stated above in the out of control section. Start your come back from GL. Work your way to upper level and so on.

Summarized this map has to pivotal points. Lower RL room and RA room. Winning or losing fights their will decide if you lose or take map control.

In the next section you can study some replays by pros.

Watch this scene of evil vs cypher starting at 1:12. You will see evil getting a frag on cypher. After getting map control by taking the RA and being in general in the RA side of the map he starts to attack YA. See what happens.

Same situation like in the video above. Cypher gets map control by taking RA and then he leaves RA side to attack YA at 7:49. This is the beginning of him losing map control. Despite hitting really hard and also getting two more frags, cooller is able to establish his position on RA side.

When Cooller gets in full control he starts to stifle into the lower RL room. Watch it in the link below. At first you will see a cooller who was not able to be at RA before it spawns thus eating a lot of damage. But after making a frag out of this situation and collecting RA he really starts to dominate the map. His key to success is, that he never lets go of the lower RL room. He only leaves it when he is sure he will be back in time. You can see him controlling a very aggressive, hard hitting and fighty cypher. What a nice accomplishment through applying a good tactic vs a pure beast!

So the goal is to take this lower RL position. Most important thing on this map. But i donít know how to get there by now.

When i asked jaysson about what i could do he told me, take more items, hit more shots. LolÖ help appreciated, not.

I see many people making the mistakes described here and ending getting raped. If you stick to this guide you will have a really solid tactical base. You for sure will have to practise things like the escape game. When you are able enough you can start extending it and find your own game.

When the execution of your tactic starts to be successful, prepare for various insults.

Did anyone complain about the damage numbers already? They should be disabled in duel, shouldnt they? And also they should disable the tiered hit sounds in duel. Now that there is this classic mode which is for not-noobs as far as i understood this. So it should be possible to adjust this classic mode without caring for noobs, right? So how about longer weapon respawn times of lets say 10 seconds for 10 minute timelimit. As it was 15 seconds for 15 minutes. Those numbers are magically equal which must make sense, i guess, but i didnt study mathematics.

But if all of the latter isnt done, at least please disable the damage numbers.

Another think is, i cant vote maps on public duel servers anymore. What is that about? I am premium, not pro, so i cant spawn stuff which was always fine for me because there were the public servers. So whats the deal with that. I dont want to play on those player servers because they are already occupied! Most of the time.

Who am i talking to anyway? :D Should i post that in the QL forums or what? I dont know, just disable those damage numbers, you who can do this, you know, i mean you. And i want to be able to vote maps again, plz #2.

i want to disable this gradient black background which is under the chat messages and i want to disable this weird sound/sample when a frag happens. both in wolfcam. what are the cvars for that?

edit: and a bonus question. my captured avi file has a duration of only 3 seconds although the correct value 32 seconds. adobe premiere has a problem with this. is it a know problem or what am i doing wrong?

Here is my idea to make QL more newb friendly.

Two things:
1. Itemtimer for items the player collected. I think of the same itemtimer that is already known from casts but obviously it only shows items that you have collected by yourself (or the team in teammodes?)
edit: the itemtimer also works for every player that heard the collection of an item and it counts down in steps of 5 seconds.
2. See how much armor the enemy has graphically. I think of the enemy model plus wearing an armor graphic thing which has different looks according to the amount of armor. Of course it must be possible to alter the armor graphic's color! (Most important feature here)

Those could be tiered:
1st skill tier: itemtimer + armorskins
2nd skill tier: itemtimer only edit: armorskins only
3rd skill tier: nothing, just as we all know it

Dunno how to integrate this in the web interface. Maybe another filter.

Rational behind this is obvious i think. Time items is a hard thing to do and showing how much armor the enemy approximately has makes it more obvious why a fight was lost and therefor less frustrating i think.
