I didn't know that the minqlx balance script was accessing port 8080 directly and thought it was using the API on port 80.

A few weeks ago qlstats was moved to a new hoster after the old one didn't want to bother with the frequent DDoS attacks any longer.

Last week some severe performance problems started on the new machine out of the blue. I took several measures trying to find out what is causing it and how to prevent it. One of these measures was to remove direct access to the backend servers on ports 8080 and 8088. They can only be accessed through port 80 now, where nginx throttles the number of requests per IP and second.

Anyway... I'm still not sure what really caused the performance issues. My best guess is that it was related to problem on the host system and not the website on the VPS. But while troubleshooting the site, I optizimed some of the heavy database queries and now the site should be faster than before.
