Going to be upgrading my computer next week. One thing I'm not sure on is boot/storage drives. I've read mixed things across many sites in regards to using SSD and HDD at the same time. Apparently anytime the HDD spins up it freezes the system for several seconds. And in some extreme cases can hang the system when Windows starts for a couple minutes.

I haven't used SSD before so I wanted to know who's running SSD and HDD drives in their system and have you had any problems with it?

I'm pretty sure everyone with an SDD has a HDD in the same system. Only exception are the super rich who can afford serveral TB of SDD exclusively for their system.

No there is no issue. It works like a regular hard drive (except that it's smaller). I do have 2 SSD and 2 HDD in my desktop.

I do get the odd pause in desktop but its nowhere near as bad as you imply and I have several HD's attached, I think its more to do with if the HDD has powered off for a couple of hours and then you access it again and its more of a split second than a couple and you can probably fine tune that in power options. So not really an issue.

Ya I can confirm this exact behavior. Sometimes even the autorun prompt starts, like the hd disconnected then reconnected later. That might be the hd dying though lol

Ah, cheers guys. I wouldn't have thought there was any issue, but then I don't keep up with hardware like I used to. Was searching another site about another topic and saw one regarding this. I got to searching and that's why I wanted to ask.

It sounds like they are talking about external HDD's? Only time I have seen that is when I access my external HDD after not using it for awhile.

I have an SSD that has my OS installed on it, an internal HDD with everything else on it and an external HDD with movies/tv shows on it for reference.

1x SSD, 3x HDD, 1x External HDD. Can confirm that only the external causes a 1-2 second pause when accessing for the first time in a while.

One guy went to the extreme and said he only uses external drives and only hooks them up when he's actually going to transfer to/from, otherwise the ssd is the only drive in the system. Some of these threads were from years ago, others last year or so. I know there's many here that are up to date on hardware so I thought I'd ask.

Sometimes random apps cause the desktop to freeze for a bit for me. Nothing is installed on my hd, it's just a storage drive, but sometimes just launching Firefox or Steam causes it to spin up. It's sorta annoying, but not that bad.

You have your pagefile on the HD?

There's some controversy with pagefiles on SSD and it makes sense to me to have it on HD if your concerned with life expectancy, but I wonder if this is what you're experiencing.

Sometimes it freezes when my RAID0 Raptors start spinning up, since I don't use them as often anymore as most things that need to be loaded quickly are stored on the SSD now.
