I've been meaning to make a thread about duel timelimit, but cba. Wish one tourney would make a bold move and or even try longer maps. How about trying 12 minutes for the duration of one cup?

Are you feeling nostalgic or have you recently played q3? The last post-ql quake3 cup wasn't much of a success amongst the players. Basically everyone who wasn't jibo raged about the over powered LG and paperthin armors.

A bit nostalgic I guess! But it would also be a silly idea to test all things in Q3 mode at once, because it wouldn't allow people to decide which individual changes had positive effects and which didn't. So yeah, you're idea is better, just change the timelimit to 12 or 15 and see what the players think.

Of course, this all comes down to personal preference anyway, but if there is an overwhelming majority that prefer extended timelimit, then id software and cup organizers alike should change the default timelimit to the new timelimit.

The same test could be done for spawns, although I can imagine testing which LG / Rail / Rocket settings are preferred will probably not give way to any clear majority.

As it happens, the timelimit question was the idea that sparked this questionaire in the first place, and the timelimit question's results are the one's I'm most interested in out of all of them.

Rail should deal 1 damage with 50ms cool down (mg speed). Also, knockback should be negative, making it very hard to move when you get hit.

Imo it's a quite good map. Weird sounds though, due to ql sound system that makes you hear things you shouldn't be able to hear.

I think they fixed that the last time the map was updated.

Beware, qw mindset; the dynamics are gonna look weird :
Most of the questions are tied together : 15 minutes duels would only work with a q3ish or qwish ( up to base ammo, higher than that = fuck off, denying the gun is good enough ) ammo system and a weapon respawn timer that isn't a 5seconds joke.

The spawn algorithm vs weapon balance stuff is a problem that only exists in q3 and ql in my mind, and it's all caused by the same thing that makes most people here say it's pretty much the perfect quake : it's decently balanced.

Balance doesn't work anywhere but on paper.
You can fuck around as long as you want with the spawn system, you're never going to get anything that isn't either decently predictable or plain unfair ( random ). Why would 100% random be unfair in ql ? The 2sec timer completely fucks up the flow, it would just give the other guy more time to set himself up.
You're too slow to go on a spawn spree or gtfo of the rapecloset. The armors are made of paper and the guns are too weak to get *efficient* kills. The machinegun fucking rapes. If you're on the victim's side and get a decent spawn, the guns are too fucking weak to do anything that isn't überrussian and sneaky and the one ya you might get isn't worth shit so unless you're one of the 12 people who can make miracles happen committing to a situation to negate an item or setting up an awkward trap isn't worth it.
Same goes for weapon respawn. If it's too long you're gonna be too slow, too far away and too out of position to make anything happen. If it's still short like it is now it's bound to be a clusterfuck.
I'm biased so I'm not gonna say anything about the rail. Most of the time, no matter what end I'm on it just feels dirty.

That shit works in qw because it's so fast and you get facefucked by a bear everytime you die. It also works in q2 because even though it's SLOW as hell, the railgun is actually hard to hit and it's their spawnrape gun. Even q4 played better than q3 because with crouchsliding you could fucking move through the map fast enough to make shit happen.

As usual with me that's about as biased and messy as it goes but that's just, like, my opinion.

Never played QW so can't really comment. It's on my list of things to do before I die though. However, I do understand how things like 15 min timelimit have dependencies on other settings in order to work correctly, such as the spawnsystem and how weapon/ammo pickups work.

Whatever may be the perfect combination, for QL, it's going to be very hard to get any "hardcore" characteristics integrated with id software's policy of keeping the game as accessible as possible (one question is, does this accessibility hook more newcomers than the amount of old-schoolers that are put off by it?).

At most we can expect something similar to a PQL mode with all these "hardcore" settings, as I really doubt they will apply any of these desired changes to the default QL modes, and if they do, it will most likely be one isolated thing, such as either the spawns or the timelimit, and there will be a big shitstorm because, as you hinted at before, they are co-dependant, along with the ammo/weapon system and won't work on their own.

So... yeah, best case scenario is id software will add a "q3+qw mode" of sorts that changes timelimit, spawnsystem and weapon/ammo system, accessible through prem/pro only, and it will barely have any players anyway unless by some miracle it really catches on.

None of that prolly made any sense :/

The funny thing is that q3 was "dumbed down" - armors, wep balance - because they didn't want good players to shit on people like they did in qw/q2. Dunno if changing the sound was on their list too, you can hear pretty much half of the map in qw/q2 but can't hear shit in the vis next to you in q3. Turns out that stuff gave "the good players" an incentive to play like machines.

I think the particular peculiarities of Q2 and Q3's sound systems were just oversight. Q2's sound system is far from ideal really. It's just something people got used to. Q3's is hardly flawless either, but it makes a little more sense. Q3's sound being limited to the PVS is accurate enough more often than not, and it was an efficient design decision for the time.

Exactly. I think it's too late to change the base rules of QL, and to be honest I don't think I'd support any fundamental changes anyway.

Bingo. Exactly. 15minute time limits with QL settings would be grating. Considering QL's control dynamic / lower weapon damages it would make some duels just an agonizing back and forth of control with even more ridiculous dualism of +back and +fwd.

Anyway, everyone has an opinion on these things...

Yeah the sound is def. an oversight, it just happens to work very well in qw as it slows the game down a lot. In q3 it varies greatly between maps, with some really messed up situations here and there and some maps that would be considered pretty much unplayable nowadays because you can't hear a fucking thing. Yeah, I'm talking about ztn. Mother Bloodrun didn't age well.

Part of why I don't like q3/ql that much is because they're "balanced" and kinda let you play the way you want to play. It's all soft counters and no actual hard counters - inb4 cypher rockets/strenx lg : that's a soft counter and osp demos with 70ping aren't worth shit either -
qw and q2 force their gameplay on you. If you don't show them respect and don't care about keeping the balance of imbalance ( for lack of a better wording ) tilted your way, you're fucked, plain and simple.
I want that again. It makes so much more sense and it's way easier to do about right than another q3 rehash that, by design, cannot be unfucked.

Somehow, the late versions of quake4 kinda fix what annoys me so much in q3/ql, I guess it's because crouchsliding is intrinsically a hard counter to +backing while lg/rl are hard counters to crouchsliding. Not the most popular thing I've ever said.

I don't understand how any of this translates to 15m time limit being a bad thing. How is the relationship of weapon pick ups connected to the length of the map?

My reasoning comes outside of the topics you brought -

1 ) In duel's hierarchy one person often controls the map and the other is defending. The controlling player is racking up frags and when the map control changes, the other dude haves his go. With timelimit 10 when the control changes the game is already over, the gap is too wide. I would like to give more time to regain the initial control.

2 ) 15>10 mins, MOAR quake.

5-6-7 was just strange, I think they switched to 7-7-7 for a good reason.

But this was a major change in balance, the community had very split opinions about it.

7-7-7 works fine because of smaller hitboxes.

i think most people try the maximum available quality always and the step downwards. + as a streamer you always upload in the highest quality possible with your connection, the options for lower quality are predone by twitch

i dont think you need 720p+ at 60fps to stream quakelive at picmip 0. as lower qualities cant exceed 30fps, you will reach to a wider audience. if a majority is watching in 720p+, then its fine, but i really dont think thats the case.

i must disagree.. why wouldnt you want 60 instead of 30 fps in a game where that we all wish to play in 125fps/120hz. there are other games like LoL where i could indeed question the new 60fps streaming trend. but in quake? hell no, give it.

besides correct me if im wrong but aint the normal 320,480 and 720 options still in 30fps and the 720p+ is 60? so this doesnt affect those with weak connections anyway

So, 72 hours later, some preliminary results are in. A few things I would point out as unexpected or otherwise noteworthy:

- There are more pro subscribers than premium.

- CTF is ranking close to TDM in terms of most played gametype.

- Hardly anyone plays on ping lower than 20.

- The community as a whole is completely undecided on which maps they hate. In other words, there is no single map that the vast majority hate.

- A considerable percentage of people would like to see 15 min duel timelimit.

- Likewise, a considerable percentage of people would like to see the q3 ammo increase system.

- The vast majority want spawn protection removed.

- No option in the "most important thing regarding QL's growth" stands out above the rest, although the options regarding QL's management and promotion are clear favourites in comparison to the options regarding in-game content and new functionalities.

- People can't spell cooller's name properly ((

Of course, these are just preliminary results from a select demographic, but certain trends are apparent.
