A lot, if not most, of the "lesser skilled" players play in these tournaments exactly to play vs the big name players. To test their skill vs them and to become better themselves.players who can have an interesting game against top players will be able to qualify for the main tournament anyway. and i dont think mid skilled players sign up to get raped 33:-1 first round.
You don't think that >5% of the players realistically think they can win the tournament before entering?why do you think the number of signups are going down then? imho because it does not make sense to compete in a tournament where you can win one bo1 and then your out for sure...
Removing such a opportunity and introducing highly suspect and dubious "invite" slots is a bad idea, and would be damaging to the community.the problem with what i am suggesting probably is the invitation process, yes :( but i think the general idea behind it is valid. though it is not going to happen anyway ;) but it would be good to have a tournament series that is fun to play in for mid skilled players
