but hey im all for separating the tournament into two stages anyway, 16 invites for sunday and an open tournament before where it is actually fun to compete for the non pro players where the top 16 qualify aswell...

You don't think that >5% of the players realistically think they can win the tournament before entering?

Removing such a opportunity and introducing highly suspect and dubious "invite" slots is a bad idea, and would be damaging to the community.

players who can have an interesting game against top players will be able to qualify for the main tournament anyway. and i dont think mid skilled players sign up to get raped 33:-1 first round.

the problem with what i am suggesting probably is the invitation process, yes :( but i think the general idea behind it is valid. though it is not going to happen anyway ;) but it would be good to have a tournament series that is fun to play in for mid skilled players

I disagree, a lot of beginners like to play against big names because it's a unique experience, regardless of whether or not they get raped. Take a look at the SK insider servers, which have existed since forever: people are actually willing to pay to play with and against their favourite players. Of course, it's not the actual tournament format since it's ffa, unlike in quake where it's the regular duel format where the less skilled player is going to get raped. It's still a nice experience for many people though, playing against Cypher, Cooller and the likes is never frustrating because you know you're going to lose, you just enjoy much more everything you do right. Look at ffx just below this post, he lost badly to fazz but actually remembered how many "impressive" awards he received (sorry for taking you as an example :p)... I think that's a good example :)

im not saying that no player is interested in getting to play some of the pros
but the competitive ground base is getting nothing out if it and imho this is where quake has a problem, not at the top, but at the competitive foundation. so this is where i would like to see somethign happen

nah i meant check-ins, was just checking some random cups and got a few weith 100+ (15, 17, 19, 21) and i havent seen that in a while :(
