In fact I have extensively followed Snowden's story mostly through mainstream papers. I read his book, his tweets, nothing really different there was said about these people. There's no fantasy, I've read hundreds of articles about it, both of their books, followed some of what Snowden talks about on twitter.

I didn't look at a fraction, I read hundreds upon hundreds of them. On many news sites. It is a good sample of the totality of the coverage on some of the biggest newssites. I also follow experts on this topic. I read (or listened to) Snowden's and Greenwald's books. Don't try to spin reading as somehow irrelevant because there is too much--you can certainly have some gauge over the sort of things that tend to be said on this or that newspaper, and that is much better than guessing based on what common folk believe.

I read them because it's a topic I care about, and so I've also talked to many people very many times about this issue, online and IRL. One of the main conclusions is that while some people are receptive, most are just fundamentally interested in feeling like their lifestyle choices are fine. Or that their state is benevolent, or that this is unimportant, or that anything to do with digital privacy means you're paranoid, you feel like you're being persecuted by the state personally, or you might start wearing tinfoil as your hat. This is despite me only using extremely reputable resources on this topic, because honestly those are depressing enough, no need to go into speculation.

People also don't often read. Or read headlines. Or read only things that roughly match their views. Skim. Never check the sources. On top of the aforementioned biases they bring to the table, judging the coverage by their views is very unreasonable.

So that's why your methodology is very flawed. Suppose though that your criticism of my methodology was true. Then it wouldn't be case that you are right and I am wrong, it would be the case that we just cannot know. Really pessimistic, I'd say.

They aren't studied / informed! Sure, may of them are educated in their fields. That doesn't necessarily translate into other fields, I'm sure you can think of countless such examples. Typically they'll use social media over reading the news, only read headlines if that.

Usually they'll either be uninterested in politics (thus won't appreciate the principle of not being spied upon even if it doesn't already directly affect them; won't appreciate the significance of constitutional rights being broken; won't appreciate the relatively obvious effects of the way companies can abuse this information against the typical consumer; won't understand that it's probably true if it's covered in academic articles and all of mainstream news etc) or they won't have much of any understanding of technology (writing any amount of code, looking at any internet connected technology will typically immediately point out the scary amount of information that can be collected etc).

Most people don't engage with media critically, they'll think on a "can I believe this / can I reject this" basis and use the first thing that comes up as confirmation of it. Mainstream media can't beat that when social media offers it conveniently.

There's certainly tons of ways we can criticize parts of mainstream media for not covering it enough, or more often for uncritically covering governments abusing people's privacy in general as opposed to Snowden's revelations. Plenty of times it'll be something to do with defense, terrorism, or irreflexively scaremongering about criminals, drug users and so on. But most of it will be done by politicians or on social media. The situation there is so, so much worse than on say NYT or The Guardian, who have covered Snowden's leaks mercilessly over a very long time. I've read about this stuff from around 2013 to now, I'm fairly certain I'm not wrong about their slant.

And the reality is, almost everyone won't have read almost any of it. Nobody has time, everyone is tired, they prefer watching TV shows or whatever else. If they're into politics, it'll probably be on social media. Here, people will be more likely to worry about a youtuber they know getting deplatformed than about entire countries being unconstitutionally spied upon. As I explained previously, they'll have a number of biases where even when presented information, they'll just want to throw it away. The gulf between mainstream media and then social media, and then finally the average person is massive.

So I really don't think we can expect mainstream media to force people to think. Not unless we want them to be relentless activists that people are forced to watch, because even if they were aggressive about such info, people wouldn't want to watch.

And I can hardly see how Trump's trade war with China is considered as easing relationship to China. I wouldn't judge it entirely based on military budget, since on the other hand you can also view it as the astronomical figure US needs to spend on defense in order to stay on top of things. Also, Russia is a lot closer to the middle east, whereas US needs to project their power half-way around the world and keep their large navy active at incredible expense. It costs the DoD between 1.5 and 2 billion dollars per day to keep the armed forces running.

Putin exerts a lot more direct power over Russia and his allies, whereas Trump can be thwarted more by congress and also the NATO alliance isn't quite as solid as of late (Turkey comes to mind). I think these are some of the points these rankings take into account. But I guess at end of the day these rankings don't mean much. 1, 2, 3. They are all powerful enough.

And yeah about the Paris Agreement there is no doubt this is a purely politically motivated move from the democrats from day 1, even since Al Gore, but if US takes it on board it might be a step in the right direction in the grand scheme of things (the main criticism of the withdrawal was precisely that without US spearheading any initiatives other countries would likely not give a shit either). That's a good argument, I didn't factor in that Biden was Obama's VP and therefore probably wants to defend his/Obama's legacy, i.e. the Iran deal.
