Over here, two people can eat quite exceptionally for 45$ a day.
That is, if you take an Airbnb with kitchen and then shop and cook yourself, which should be the obvious option for anyone with a limited budget.

Over hear it's the opposite. It's almost not worth it to cook yourself using quality ingredients if it's only for 1-2 people. Sure you can cook if it's only yourself, but the only way you're doing it cheaper than any restaurant, let alone fast food, is to use shit ingredients. It only starts getting cheaper once you start making meals for 4-5 people.

Now this is obviously in regards to someone on a budget. Of course if cost per meal/person isn't as much of a concern as eating healthy then it's no problem.

It's sad how it's gotten over here. I remember when I was a kid and cooking a meal with good ingredients was way cheaper than eating out.

Yeah the food industry in this country is insane. We spend more money on eating quality/tasty/healthy food than we do paying for our cars per month I would say.

Don't tell me 1kg pasta, tomatoes, garlic, onions, basil, oregano, and some form of meat (sausage) costs more than $45, and you can easily make a meal for the whole week out of that, like I did in my student years, it sucks to eat pasta every day, but you got to eat and if there's no money, there's no money.

Lentils and beans cost nothing and are both very caloric rich and very nutrient rich. Vitamins, minerals, etc. Very quick and simple to cook also.

Eggs are also dirty cheap.

But even if they couldn't cook, sandwiches or fast food like mc donalds don't cost 45 dollars a day, and considering most americans are perfectly fine with the idea of eating fast food everyday (and considering psygib mass), it shouldn't be that much of a sacrifice.

But sure, it kinda ruins the romanticity of having dinner in a dimly lit restaurant with red wine and appetizers.

If anything, food is cheaper in america. Both at malls like wallmart, where most things are dirty cheap, or fast food chains like mc donalds.

In England, we have a huge range of supermarkets from the really cheap like aldi, to the incredibly overpriced like Waitrose.

Then germany has exceptionally cheap supermarkets, because food in the usa is cheaper than almost anywhere else in the western countries.

I guess the wide disparity in opinions arises from big prize disparities among regions in the US, i.e. prizes in New york are different from the prizes in some small town inside the country.
That being said, looking at the Walmart Groceries website (no location specified cause you need an account for that lmao), prizes for fresh vegetables are roughly equal, pasta maybe a bit cheaper and meats are way cheaper than what I'd pay in one of our two major supermarket chains (see this and this, with the CH Franc and the dollar being pretty much equal (prizes are normal despite it being the home delivery service)), and it doesn't seem difficult at all to put together healthy and yummy meals for two people at 45$/day from walmart alone.

(we have the big german discounters Aldi/Lidl in the country since a few years ago, but they are not that much cheaper)

Dude, you're living in Switzerland. That's a fucking exceptionally expensive country. When I first went to a grocery store I thought I might as well better kill myself than buy meat. Cheapest chicken was like 35chf/kg if I remember correctly and decent beef was close to 80... Fuck me.
