I asked him to come play qc with me at pax, hes not doing it 'for the money'. There is no money in Quake still, its about having fun. Its a preposterous thing to say.

The fact that ESR generally doesn't censor people is one of the things that make it attractive. It hasn't yet gone down the path of seeking to find offense in everything, like so many other websites.

Maybe Wheat will see everyone jumping to his defense and actually feel good.

If you are so hypersensitive that someone's posts are giving you panic attacks, don't read them. For this reason, every site should have a block function, but for some reason, I've never needed one, and I am far from the most thick-skinned person around.

Well, if the post was completely removed, I don't know how it would look if it had replies---unless you want all the replies removed too.

So at best you're going to see a blank entry with replies, at which point, the replies may make you curious enough to want to see the blanked out entry without going and completely unblocking that person.

In any case, the only people I have ever tried to block in any game or website are spammers.

An ignored user's post will appear as "Ignored User Thread". Clicking on that will reveal said post and all of the replies associated to it.

And in general terms, pretty much everyone here is excited about QC revitalizing a hobby of ours. For one I've been erect for two weeks straight. Not the right time to be a negative nancy about Quake, ruining our boners.

Because it's an offtopic (1) that's just 100% toxic (2). One thing is to be negative about something, providing some arguments and saying what should be done instead. Another thing is to just throw shit.

I'm going to speculate that most things that could be moderated aren't removed because if removed the site would have way less activity, becoming boring. I have no problem with that. However I'd like the QC threads to be moderated, because Quake is why we are here. Make it the non-trolling section.

BTW the mods remove a ton of crap already. We only get to see the greatest hits of the current ESR trolls.

To be fair, I don't care if I'm remembered for how good of caster I was, I'd rather be remembered as the guy who would come home from work and cast for 4 hours every night cause he loved quake during a time where no one was making money from it and people did it cause they fucking loved it.

QL uses unlagged doesn't it? Or at least a bad implementation of it?

QL does use unlagged. I can't really imagine a modern FPS not using it. Implementation quality may vary, but the principle is the same. Hit detection uses a server-side state for each player, being some point in the past determined by his ping, instead of one server-side state used by everyone.

This causes things like ducking behind a wall and then getting hit by a rail because on your laggy opponent's screen, you're still visible.

Knockback combined with unlagged produces some weird effects. No pun intended. :D

I would heavily prefer that they should force the clients to extrapolate the received server state (by their own ping with a fixed max amount) such that they 'actually' aim infront of where the player is at on the server... And restrict the movements such that the estimation of the extrapolation is correct to a high degree.
If you want you can still throw in the unlagged stuff for the really high pings.

It's just rediculous that playing an FPS on 30ping vs an opponent of similar ping should feel like you're both on 70.
Especially because a single jump in QL takes more than half a second.... And people are jumping all over every map all the time. It's so easy to predict that accurately it makes no sense to fuck it all up with pure unlagged.

There are SOOO many ways in which you can make it work much better than you would think of first. But hey they still haven't called me for advice.

Y'know, I do have a bit of a soft spot for client-side extrapolation. There is something so much more pure about having one universal server state. It would be nice to see just how good that extrapolation can be made, to remove a lot of the warpiness, which would scare away a lot of players.

I'm not sure I like the sound of "restricting movement" though.

I also can't see why unlagged would necessarily create a feeling of increased latency. I just don't like that out-of-sync feeling it produces.

Whatever netcode they use, I would like them to punish warpers more heavily. I don't want not sending packets to be some kind of in-game advantage. It is seriously one of the most infuriating aspects of the game.

The thing is, the more free the movement is the more difficult it becomes to predict (and thus more warp etc due to client-side extrapolation).

The QL movement however already is pretty restricted in that regard, preferably you'd want a tad slower acceleration from standing still to gaining the running speed and a more gradual slowing down after landing but that's about it.

It doesn't have to mean that a game needs to be slow to be predictable. Take all of the racing games, the games seem really fast but the trajectory that the vehicle takes are very highly predictable until someone crashes into a wall.

Similarly in quake the trajectory of all jumps are highly predictable, until they run into a rocket. Although in general even that is pretty predictable (but more difficult to actually predict and would probably need some kind of decent prediction model).

It's my view however that with a few minor adjustments you should be able to play fast FPS games with a lan like feeling games on average pings of around 30. (aka (player 1 ping + player 2 ping)/2 = 30)
By simply extrapolating server states, without having any major downside to play ability for others.

In QL however the guy with the shittiest ping is forced to play +forward with LG because all other options fail as a result of netcode.

I have to say, I am disappointed with admins of this site censoring my bulgarian gypsy friend, balkan.
