Hoping for some nostalgia games, I've played quake1 ffa on a 56k modem with an iMAC.

Yea, Get QW and just connect to a internet server.
more than 500 QuakeWorld servers are online around the world.

use the search function on the left to find a server near you - OR just use the client's (ezQuake or whatever) built in server browser. common keys are SPACE, ENTER, Directional keys.


on the server just type the map's name to change to that map. most servers requires you to /ready to start (unless its a pure FFA server).

Is Net Quake just nquake or something different?

What is different about nquake than default QW? I was under the impression nquake was just a nicely put together package for QW?

I have maybe 50 Q1 duels total and all using nquake so I dont know much about the whole deal

NetQuake describes the network-playing capabilities of the original Quake.

QuakeWorld was developed afterwards with the focus on better online gaming performance.

It worked (and still works) very well in local network but over the internet it was almost unplayable unless you had a very good connection (i.e. T1), which were even less abundant than nowadays. Ok that clears things up, thanks. Is the NetQuake community very large and what is there reasoning for using original Q1 for mp when QW exists?

I am no active player myself, but I have only seen activity on QuakeWorld in the past years with leagues like Smackdown, EQL, Duelmania and so on.

Was not aware that there is still a nQ scene and if there are huge differences in gameplay. Bunnyhopping exists in both versions apparently. Apparently NetQuake was more popular in the US many years back, so when Clan 9 (SE) and Death Row (US) fought their legendary match, it was 5 maps in each version since Death Row perferred nQ. Guess some others here or over on QuakeWorld.nu can provide better insights.

Just to be clear:
nQuake is a package based on the Shareware version of Quake that includes the ezQuake QuakeWorld client. This setup is used to play QuakeWorld.

Main difference is netquake is lagged movement and aim. Originally QW was unlagged movement and lagged aim. Modern QW is unlagged movement and aim.

For some reason there is still a backwards and slightly insane NQ community in the US that loves to play laggy NetQuake. They play other modern unlagged FPS but will forever refuse QW. Go figure.

It is an installer, which has almost everything you need to play QW (new graphics, lots of maps, new weapon models and so on) You can make your QW actually make pretty decent looking with it. The only thing it is missing, is a .pak file with some maps. Unfortunately, those maps include the most played ones.

So you have to buy Quake from Steam to get this .pak file. Or you just start playing with the nQuake package. Sometimes problems solve themselves from alone.
