Depends on what they intend to do with it. They aren't just buying the current game, they're buying the name and rights to any possible releases in the future(maybe a MC 2.0 for example).

I was just reading about it, also. I know many on ESR don't care for MC, but, it's insane to think that just a few years ago, notch was sitting at his pc coding the alpha/beta. Now, he's got more money than god. He's been rich for a while, now. That's a good point. Maybe they'll try to kill it eventually because there is an entire generation of younger gamers that currently play NOTHING but MC, which majorly cuts into sales of their other games.

Meh at that, linux distros had multi desktops 10 years ago. As do winxp and win7 with 3rd party software support.

It looks better than win8 at least, although that isn't hard

Man I know that many people don't "like" much MacOS but I love it and I only have windows7 to play games. I wish I had more knowledge for Linux.

Win7 is pretty damn good all around, can't really fault it on anything big.

I cant remember the last time any of my win7 installs blue screened or went fubar in a major way both at home or work ( i'm a sysadmin).

Linux is only good for running oracle :P It's stability and low hardware requirements were its main selling points but Windows has kinda caught up to it by now for most practical use cases.

Clusters and supercomputers and stuff are a different story ofcourse..

But I guess (plz I GUESS) mostly softwares run for Win because of the win monopoly, it would be much better to code for Linux instead of Win in order to code much more other computer languages wouldn't it?

The language used would be the same on any platform.It's not that linux has its own widely used programming language or something (well u got bash for scripting tasks but thats not for making games)

It's just OS specific optimizations. C++ is still the main language used for games afaik (though i might be wrong)

When did you look at linux distributions for the last time?

Today I tried to install Mint based on Debian.
Instalator got stuck twice but eventually it worked.
I've heard there are nvidia drivers for Linux so I tried to install them.
No luck there. Few easy steps, yada yada.
"No screens found" - maybe tomorow!
Settings for visuals got fucked for some reason and pushed CPU to 100% usage.

Minecraft is one of the biggest franchises in gaming. Kids love that stuff, on the pc, on consoles and on phones even. Also, as simple as that game seems, it's truly groundbreaking, spawning a whole genre with a renewed sense of adventure.

They can make sequels, spin offs, etc. until the end of the time and microsoft can realistically think they bought the next super mario bros. However they face a kind of big problem: their Miyamoto already left :P

So, while 2.5 billion initially sounds like a lot, you are not considering they bought something that changed the whole industry and that still has huge potential. It's like buying google 10 years ago.

I don't see how minecraft is all that revolutionary...it's just a simple game with some standard monsters and animals, mining, woodcutting and digging, add in some potions, and then build whatever you want. The really key minecraft features are:

-world made from blocks (which isn't really that new)
-crafting 'recipies' (which isn't really that new)

The way I see it, the game is fun and definitely worth playing. But it's not actually that special.

You seem to be forgetting that no game is new after 10 years of existing. Pong isn't new, but it sure as fuck was when it came out. Same goes for every game that's ever been popular. Hell, it goes for literally everything that's popular.

It's stupid to say that it isn't new in 2014, where there are 100,000 spinoffs of it, because it was very much a new thing in year 20XX, when it originated.

roblox has been around for ages, and minecraft has more crude blocks than it. Lego has been around even longer...they just never made a first person game with lego blocks.

I do actually really enjoy minecraft, but it just surprises me when people say that it's so revolutionary.

It's not the idea that it's revolutionary - bricks have been around for thousands of years, and building in general has been around longer. I never said it revolutionized anything, though it did bring this old idea of, "building with blocks" into the video game medium, which can be considered a revolution, if not then at least a very new idea.

If you judge the originality of Minecraft based on these criteria, then no revolution is revolutionary, and nothing new or fresh is really new or fresh. Shooting people has been around for ages, and before that, simply killing people (or non-people). There is no video game that brings something new to the table that has not been around for centuries, if you're going to compare the, "originality" of a game to something similar that is not a video game.

And since nothing is new or revolutionary, why even try? Why even live? Why not just go jump off a bridge if everything that can be done has been done before, in a different fashion? No point in living on, just to see the same thing done a hundred, thousand, million more times.

Less than 6 months ago Notch pulled a tantrum and cancelled Minecraft on the Rift because they 'sold out to facebook for like 2.2 billion, so less than 6 months later Notch sells out to Microsoft who are major share holders/influence in the company that apparently creeps him out, not to mention are in bed with the CSA and about a bazillion other places that would make facebook look like cub scouts.
