I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on how advertising / money distribution / event funding works, but as a random spectator it seemed so out of place. Seems like 30k and the potential for great advertising was squandered in a 90 second raffle when most viewers weren't even tuned in.

Wouldn't vodaphone or whatever the sponsor was (see I don't even remember) get great coverage by sponsoring the "main event" and not an afterthought sideshow raffle, though?

If my company donated 30K and I found out that 1.4k viewers were going to see it for 90 seconds while random raffle names are drawn, I'd be upset.

go to a quakecon and you'd understand. it's not about the tournaments, and it's not about the stream viewers. it's about the event and attendees

marketing for WHAT? jesus christ they gave away free money at an event with a raffle. the only people upset are the ones who still think quakecon is about the tournament, which it is NOT.

Needs to be a new arena shooter that returns the genre back on its feet. Quakelive/Quake 3 will not be the game that does this. Nor will any of the previous Quake games.

Agreed, it doesn't seem right that the best QL player in the world wins 9k once a year, yet 3 random people who attend the event can get 10k?

Not to mention that 150k of hardware that gets given away for free too.

the people who visit quakecon for quake is just a fraction, would be kind dumb to cater to these if they wanna keep the event going. so hard for you peeps to accpet that quake is dead :c

Yeah, but according to some bald-headed twat, the quake tournaments at quakecon are the backbone of the event. It's funny how the tournaments and it's participants get treated like second rate citizens year after year.

i belive sync explained it some time ago: quakecon is not a quake lan, its a ID presentation, with ql tourney.

so i dont see why giving monies to ppl who attend is bad. as always quakers are self centered faggots.

I'm not quite sure to understand how someone winning the lottery affects Quake negatively. It's not like that money could have gone to the prize pool.

The argument is that it should have, or that it's unfair that a lottery winner can win more than the competitors in the tournament that the lottery participants are watching in the first place.

Quake is waning because of small playerbase which translates in being at the mercy of FailCon and 1-2 esports events that throw a bone from time to time.

ql is a game before anything else. the earnings from competition are a benefit to those with te free time and dedication to become the best players. no player is forced to keep up with the grind to be the best in the world, nor to even earn money. i dont know the statistics, but i guess that the number of players in the ql base who earn money by playing the game is less than 1%.

there are more 'returns' from quakelive than monetary rewards. the competitive nature of the game, the mastery of mechanics, the socialization, the spectatorship of exceptionally capable players, the process of learning that contributes to other areas of life, and so on. monetary reward is an aspect that applies to a miniscule segmen of the base of players.

spectators being awarded unmerited prizes comparable to or greater than prizes earned through tribulation is a legitimate topic for complaint. however, the hyperbolic claim that it is some singular root for lack of participation in a process that is demonstrably active without the promise of monetary compensation is not only ignorant, but also delusional to the point of stupidity.

the reality is that people actuall enjoy quake so much that, rather than playing to win money, they will PAY TO PLAY.
