I'd say from 4 P.M. (16:00) to 1 A.M (01:00). Also depends on what day it is. Most active in the evenings. However, this may change drastically if people were more enthusiastic about playing pickups. I remember spontanctf when games started early in the morning and the pickups ran until late at night.

I play pub CTF everyday, for me it's the best game mode ever in quake :) You have to use your brain to achieve something, not like in CA (90% aim).
I play on 8 years old laptop in windowed mode with 5 euro mouse without mousepad, with crappy internet but I can still trick the entire enemy team of 120hz aimers just by my movement, defrag and evading skills - that's why I love CTF so much.

Then #playquake may be a good place for you to receive some challenge, with more serious gameplay. :-)

This is interesting since I wanted to talk about CTF in the forums these days,just didn't find the time to wrote a message yet.

I already tried one ctf pickup, it took a lot of time to start because people didn't add. One it started, it was ok.

I find this mode very cool but never really played it a lot. Recently I played some games and enjoyed it, mainly because I got better at moving and timing.

The thing is, #playquake is a weird name for a CTF based channel. Perhaps the community should start a new channel like #ctfpickups, that would make more sense. That way, we just need to focus on these "pickups" channel and promote them everywhere we can.

Quake has no "match seeker" like Starcraft 2 does,but if IRC channels are properly advertised I think it can more or less play the same role.

As far as I know, the name is ok. Most people knows about the channel, but chooses to play on public servers instead. Partly because they think no one will invite standard-membership and they don't want to wait long for a pickup to start.

The main goal should be to promote the channel so people are enthusiastic to play more CTF seriously and to make the channel run faster. Autoteams like in TDM-pickup may be a solution and to set a timelimit at maximum 5 minutes to join the server.

so what 3 pickups starting at the same time ? 3 different servers, and ofc, if you are for instance added to both ctf and tdm, and a tdm game starts, you will get autoremoved from ctf.
it's really simple, and has been proven to work.

also a downside with several different channels to add in(instead of 1 channel with 1 bot sorting it all out), is that you for instance !add in #tdmpickup, and it doesn't start for say 30 min, and while waiting for it to start you !add in #playquake, and that pickup starts, you most likely will forget that you added tdm and now that game will start and will be 1 man short because of you and you'll get banned and whatnot for noshow.

we already got issues with people being confused of which pickup they added to and which server to join, and that's only from the tdm games from #tdmpickup. we have more than twice the people of cpmpickup and warsowpickup combined on an average night

but how is having several channels to be added in resolve this problem other than make it worse when you are for instance added in both ctf and tdm and forget to remove in 1 chan when a pickup starts in the other?

Well what the #tdmpickup bot lacks is a !server command like the playquake one and the bot can pm the server info for the players added. This can be brought even further by making the bot allow only !server command from added players and set the server info to the game they are added to.

The problem i find is that a div1 team consisting of aim heavy players can own teams that have a very strong TP, but lack hack aim , will loose most of the time. That shouldn't happen,..people like fulgore who focuses on movement (tricks,RJs and super slick strafe jumping) should dominate! Not like fucking winz running in with quad and 50% lg..fuck you winz!

Quake CTF is great and the best mode for sure. I played many pickups but got tired of playing the same shit for a decade (45% p9, 45% p1 and 10% ironworks or p5). TDM would be as dead as CTF if they would have continued to play dm6 and osp5 all the time.
Playquake needs to make a new mappool without old maps to rise again. I dont know if this already happened since I dont play anymore, anyway, Ill try to play some games this weekend if anyone invites me.

tbh new map pool should be something like,

p1 cause it's epic and even bad teams can play good on it (since it's that kind of map).

c7 to prevent all the vanilla ql whine (even tho after 5 years it's boring as fuck to play it over and over again)
coldcathode cause it's new
infintiy cause it's new, even if it's designed with c(rap)pm gameplay in mind more then osp/qln

so that's 5 and I'd keep it at that, at least for competitions, so new maps DO GET PLAYED, instead of dropped and ignored.

Nonetheless, if people would want 7 maps in the pool, I'd add finnegans/w3 because the map just requires SICK teamplay and is probably the hardest map to play in ql + it was never played competitively in ql. For the last map I guess I'd put in c2 since it's an old favorite and there's actually more then 1 way to play it.

c2 dunno, i find it can be a lot of fun, even with the other team having better aim..good swimmers and sneaky attacking can win you the map,..but i know a lot of people hate it because of that open mid

With infinity I think it's safe to say that even though its new, its just plain bad and shouldn't replace anything. Reflux, c2 and fluorescent are better options imo

biggest difference between tdm and ctf community is that the tards who get constantly warned, kicked and banned in #tdmpickup (for good reason) are the same guys who are 'stars' in CTF and some people actually think they are cool and imitate them. rofl

"adult" is probably the wrong word, when I see how much is even flamed in the #tdmpickup channel and the mods do most of the time nothing about it, if its a regular player. if its a new guy that flames a regular, then he gets banned, but not the other way round

When I was an admin in #playquake, I had to fight hard to get them permanently banned, as some of the other admins thought we needed them to keep the channel active. My argument was that while the cunts who ruined pickup do indeed play a lot of games, their behaviour was putting off other players from adding as they couldn't be arsed with the makie/conan show.

In the end I did manage to win the other admins round and get them permanently banned, as it is a sad state for a pickup channel if you need cunts like them to keep it alive, IMO if a pickup ever gets to that stage then it should be shut down immediately.

Anyways after a month one of the other admins unbanned them for god knows whatever reason, I think it was q50 because he's friends with them and in their private channel. During the month that makie/conan were banned, the number of pickup games in #playquake increased than over the previous month.

I personally find the rage/trolling amusing, but i am well aware its not for everyone...A lot of players posses that div1 arrogance(DP *cough* :DD )..one way i see it turned around if the most enforced rule and most important one was to prevent people from bashing beginners...No one wants to be called "fucking shit noob" .."dont fucking ever add again"

q50 probably unbanned them because #pq was dead (summer of 2012 was pretty much max 2 pickups a day or non at all)

All this happened way before summer 2012. Can't remember the exact dates but it could even be as far back as October 2011

Bottom line was that the banning system used wasn't a deterrent: 1 day bans etc, and they'd been given so many chances in the past. The 1-month ban did see some improvement in behaviour but from what has been said in this thread I can assume normal WOROLOL business has resumed.

Basically the admins need to get some backbone and ban the troublemakers, it'd make the pickups far more enjoyable and did show it lead to more games being played not fewer.

i can't enjoy pub games in any way...i play ql for the competitive factor, you just don't get that in pubs, so intsalling a lightweight program like irc, really shouldn't be a problem for anyone.

in ql, no. There were and are still some games that end up being a bit competetive though, they are rare but I was wrong to say that it was entirely without spirit, just alot less then cw's, pcw's or even pickup

Used to love ctf , but the (admittedly long ago) times i have added up to pickup, games took over 25 mins to start and then it was nothing but abuse and whining for 20-45 mins (inc rage quits and subs). So just stopped bothering.

IMO, if you really want to revive the scene, create a newb-friendly 5v5 channel (or a less elitist one, if you prefer) where good players are also welcome (as long as they don't act like complete idiots on a daily basis), and forget about the mandatory german server.

Can't be any worse than the North American community: same 10 people adding, same 5 people spamming forced unfunny humor and un-funny memes/youtube links all day in CAPS, same 3 people who refuse to play on certain servers unless they have their precious 30 ping (OMG 60 PING IS TOO HARD)

yeah 75 is still tricky, rl and especially plasma are hard to hit. lg is so so and rg is ok if you can get rid of the feeling that you need to lead constantly (which makes you react slower).

You improve on positioning and decision making when you play against better players, aim remains the same but you do push yourself harder compared to pubs

stable ping is all important. if you have pl or spikes etc it doesnt even matter much what you ping. zoidoff had that problem with his 30 ping, spikes etc all over the place, you cant just hit anything like that.

and i can tell you esr-guys, video processing is a great fun and with youtube tutorials much easier then i expected. and the best thing is, when you made enough ql-related videos, you will get unbanned if they catch you cheating, just like the zeroql monkey.

playquake staffers stepped up after seeing this thread. they picked up cenix to help admin so he can ban people looking for pcw in the channel. probably because if someone wants to pcw the pickup is instantly dead so they can't tolerate that.

I think you should calm down at times and realise that harassing people isn't always the way to go :)

Other things include, being more helpful towards the newer players that really need help. Instead of dishing them and harassing them, try to offer them advise so that they can improve. Yelling at people so that they won't bother coming back, that is the problem in our pickup.

ClanBase is hosting cups for ctf, but there are the usual people joining and leaving the cups. Noone has an obligation to host cups for ctf, but we do it because we want the community to stay alive. Do we get paid? Instead, admins receive harrasments all the time and it makes this "job" so unrewarding in terms of getting respect.

Btw, if you think that your's and makie's behaviour in the pickup towards others are fine, I guess I should just stop there :P Because that's where we fundamentally disagree on. That is the root of the problem.

CTF is my love, I play CTF since the beginning (I'm old, have no time and also pretty far from being any good, I just play it because it's fun and I love it).
Running servers, watching the community evolving and playing the game for decades, one thing I can tell you for sure: every single time the Q3 CTF pickup people recruited players from the community, those players disappeared pretty soon and I never seen them again (except some very rare exceptions)... both in Q3 and QL, the recruiting waves gave a pretty significant blow to the CTF player base, what you could feel immediately. Suddenly seeing the people - you added and played for weeks - on pickups servers and then never seeing them again.... just bad.
