about mystery, I find Memento or The Prestige are much better work by Nolan than inception, dunno why people liked inception that much, its pretty average compared to what he is capable of.

Also most Hitchcock movies are still fun to watch even after 40 years, quite an accomplishment.

i never knew those 3 were by the same d00d, and although I was hyped for inception it was kinda a let down, not nearly as amazing as peeps seemed to say, prestige was much more epic

vertigo, the movie that invented the 'see someone - turn away for a second - look back - HE'S GONE!!!', awesome!

drag me to hell is good for a group of friends to laugh at, pretty bad for horror imo

yea i remember going to it on release in theaters and we considered it more of a comedy by the time it was over

I thought it was supposed to be a horror-comedy from sam raimi, like his "evil dead" series, it does succeed at being that.

horror movies are a lot like comedians. I don't think any of them are any good. it may be a failing of the imagination on my part, or perhaps from my life experiences I have a callused heart and mind. they don't achieve what I presume to be the intended effect--fear.

some surreal movies have quite the "airy" and psychedelic impression on me, though, like Lost Highway. perhaps I should try experimenting with drugs that I might appreciate horror movies for once.

everyone has something that they don't like to see/feel and if that particular horror movie has it, then you'll freak the fuck out. Maybe you just havent seen enough horror movies so that you'd find what you are afraid of.

Have you watched the BBC's Sherlock Holmes? It was a 3 episode mini-series. First and third episodes were really good, second was alright.

I'd say most of these are not your typical horror/mystery movies but still interesting takes on the genres/generally good movies. for more recent high gore stuff watch the already mentioned martyrs.

antichrist, eyes wide shut, and stalker are more of the noiry, ethereal/surreal type things I mentioned above. I quite like all of those three movies, particularly Eyes Wide Shut (it is horribly underrated).

I'm not sure if everyone would agree it's as serious as the others, but I'd add Bubba Ho-tep.

If you like surreal movies watch some by Jodorowksy ( El Topo, The Holy Mountain).

Eyes Wide Shut is fucking great and Kubrick is a genious. Also has one of my favourite endings in a movie.
Bubba Ho-Tep on the other hand should be on any list of movies. Doesnt matter if it is horror, comedy or drama :)

yea I think that's my favorite ending to a movie probably. well, it's up there, with movies like Planet of the Apes (I watched it having not had the ending spoiled as many people probably do--lucky me).

i saw the ending of planet of the apes on tv...missed some parts in middle/start and i never understood the ending till now xD

Totally agree on eyes wide shut being underrated. I think it has to do with the whole cruise/kidman thing.

Anyways... when it comes to horror I havent seen so much lately.

Watch The Thing (1982) if you havent seen it yet. The Ward has been released last week or so and it was quiet ok. New Carpenter is always good.

I am currently waiting for Attack the Block which will be released in September. Hope I can catch before it at the Fantasy Filmfest.

If you want to watch something trashy I can recommend Bad Biology. It even features some kind of inside-pussy-pov.

For mystery check out Polanskis The Tenant. I enjoyed that one a lot.

Dead snow

Hey guys looking for this freaky old movie from the '70s (?); I can't remember it's name (Might've just been one word) but I do remember some scenes from the very start.

It's a black'n'white grainy film, bit like some kind of art student's project. The story (If you can call it that) starts out showing this wooden house which has an open door/entrance. The camera switches to one in the corner of the house and we see a man in drags in a chair. Psychotic music fills the empty air as we see this figure cutting at himself with what I recall is a pair of scissors. He's disemboweling himself, organ by organ as he shrieks in pain. Soon as the figure dies, collapsing to the floor, another white heavenly figure appears, it's a woman, who then gives this figure a handy dandy.

The story behind it is that "God is dead", implying that this figure is a dying God and that this womanly figure is the Virgin Mary, who then gets the seed of God by giving the old dead bastard a quickie and then she gives birth to a man (Perhaps Jesus?).
