its shit, and tries to imitate goth rock and proper chessie hardcore metal

if your gonna look like a twat and cant handle proper metal, you want some tekno

Techno is emo? LOL. Techno is like happy music, good stuff. Emo music is like those death metal songs where the 'singer' is all in black with face paint on and fucking growling like a dog. Shit's just pathetic.

death metal songs where the 'singer' is all in black with face paint

doesn't happen m8.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn7avji_S28

Emo death metal at its crappiest.

Where is the emo part in your link ?
You obviously don't have any clues of what it is :)

That's neither emo nor death metal

neither death nor emo m8

emo`s are middleclass think they`re goth but not goth, they just look like franky goes to hollywood gay along with all the other 80s gay pop acts

metal are just a bunch of stoners growing up, sitting on the ass or doing extream sports, or gunning down for drugs

tekno is`nt happy, that just club nights with clubland on the flyer or door, if clubland is`nt on the flyer, most DJ`s will be banging out all the dark n nasty stuff because you cant do it at home

so much fail in one post shouldn't be allowed

lol idiot :D

LOL indeed.

germans are gonna need it now

I don't know what it is.

emo`s tag alot of stuff as emo, but most of it is the same
http://www.last.fm/tag/emo

Most of the bands tagged 'emo' on last.fm are wrong.
They have been tagged 'emo' because some kids wearing black stuff and thinking they are cool emo but they obviously don't know what emo music is :)

You have a good definition and some great examples there : http://www.mesaverde.co.uk/mp3/

lol

Most of the comments are clueless. As for me, it's too screamy\cheesy.

Metalcore formula

Intro: dropD e-string picking
verse: DropD e-string picking with growls
Chorus: whimper vocals

Add for variation:
+ downtuned E + some more whimpering

hahaha

I like boysetsfire.

That is all.

Do you guys know Simple Plan?
I use to go to highschool with them; They add the best punk rock band ever.(reset) Real hard punk, You know NOFX style.. Anyways, they never made a penny, so they broke the band and started a new one called simple plan where they would sing about being 15 years old and crying alone in your room because nobody understands you. (comming from a group that is all over 25 of course..) They went on to sell millions of records and are now millionnaire.

Its sad to say, but emo sells.
The funny part is kids think they really listen to some hardcore shit.

* If your a simple plan fan and I offended you: stfu your a fag

So? 40 years ago disco sold, what's your point?

im sure you can do better than that.. your like a troll master...

You're*

Genuine question mistaken for trolling, success.

ok ralph, to answer your question, I dont think I had a point, just discussing on the topic...

What do you know about emo music ? :)
I know it sells
Maybe that was my point
also that kids are weak fags nowadays

Turbo agree on kids these days.

I can't say I'm an expert on emo music since listening to anymore than 20 seconds of it causes me to convulse and foam at the mouth. Of course it sells, just like the genres which were popular before it. Take "grunge", as it was notoriously called. It was pretty popular in the early to mid 90s and that sold pretty well. Remember the flannel phase? Kids these days wouldn't know much about that, though.

In any case, today's youth can be defined like so:

girlfriend: C'mon, lets have sex.
boyfriend: I'm too sad to have sex.
girlfriend: I'm sad too; lets have sex and cry.
boyfriend: I'm already crying.

ralph? RALPH?

pls go. :(

no

emo is a underground scene. It's a sub-genre of Punk-Hardcore.
The first bands appears to be emo are Moss Icon and Rite of Spring.

Then you can call the stereotyped guys/girls who wear skinny pants and have black/flashy color hair, an emo. But that style come from the mainstream part of emo (tagged as emo in last.fm) which is absoluetly wrong if we look at the definition of the emo scene.

Btw Simple Plan sucks. And It's not emo music at all :>

Real emo stuff :

and as you can see, guys who are playing in those bands don't wear skinny pants :)

the get up kids!

Loma Prieta is fucking brilliant :)

When you just type a controversial word in a topic, it's quite funny to see what sort of shit people say on it :D

damn, I was so sure liked boysetsfire ... :(

http://www.dumpert.nl/mediabase/1018241/4d114...eties.html

hahahhahahahahahahaha

as fishy said.. mainstream "emo" is not exactly emo in the original form
it's just a bunch of imagery and fashion diluted into newer musical currents that had no identity to sell themselves.

emo is now an umbrella term that can be applied to so many things it makes no sense.. from metalcore bands to pop music

Emo used to be coined by bands like Fugazi (who were actually good)

Ah well, wouldn't want to associate myself with the shit people spew from there now. The only thing close to 'emo' music that I could say I like is Sikth who are about as emo as cottage pie.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I16RnDOUWec

Yeah Sikth was a good band, I put that band in the "Mathcore" tag.
It becomes kinda gay to invent 348920 tags for bands :)

But if you like that kind of bands, check for "Mathcore"
Periphery is similar to Sikth
http://www.myspace.com/periphery

I knew Bulb a long time ago and liked his early stuff when it was more Meshuggah influenced but the more he added elements like a melodic vocalist and whatever to pander to the more mainstream the less I liked it.

I still prefer the early versions of Periphery's stuff when it went under the Bulb name and was digitally recorded (that is, with POD's, DKFH etc rather then accoustics. It sounded more digital and sharper) That plus it had better solos and vocals. It was overcompressed to fuck but just sounded like a wall of sound and so much more extreme then it does now. It just sounds tame in comparison

Oh you know Bulb, nice.
Tbh it's the same for me, I've just listen to the myspace since a long time, it's quite crap actually :/

You should try some emo/screamo bands, I'm sure you will like some of them :p

Not a emo band but they are fucking brilliant :)
(Singer and guitarist are from Mihai Edrisch)

looks a bit like both of you only list screamo when you think of emo.

Indeed, because emo scene is headed by the screamo bands nowadays.
The term 'screamo' has been made to differentiate the modern emo (chaotic, screamy voice) from the old emo (again, we are splitting the thing :/)

Like said in the link i've posted : http://www.mesaverde.co.uk/mp3/
"Throaty shouted vocals early-90s style emo (Circle Takes The Square, Ampere) and the post-rock with screamo (Envy, Daitro...) style seems to be the direction the emo scene is headed in at the moment"

You hit the nail on the head with that last quote.

Emo is a scene not a musical style.

it is now. it used to be a musical style, though.

That's not what the quote is saying, it specifies what kind of styles of emo (music) are currently the most played in the emo scene (which includes everyone playing any sort of emo).

I know and knew what it was trying to say, however what he actually revealed was something different.

He tells us that the emo scene is now into music that is stylistically different to that of early-90s emo and he even gives us a description of the sound, post-rock with screamo. Ergo 'emo' is basically a scene more so than a style, since the music described as being emo is stylistically different.

Put it this way:

Jay Z, the famous hip-hop artist starts writing a new album, however he decides he isn't interested in hip-hop anymore and instead he writes an opera.

Is Jay Z's new album a hip-hop album? No, of course it isn't. What if every hip-hop artist followed suit? Is opera now hip-hop? No, of course not. People would be talking about how hip-hop died when all the artists went and started making opera music.

That isn't the situation we have here. Instead of it being considered a different style, the emo scene calls it emo and carries on like it did before albeit listening to a new style of music than what it was before.

That's one way of looking at it, the other could be that music is evolving and this includes that some parts that always were present get shifted more into the focus than others.
It's not like 'post-rock with screamo' is so completely new musically speaking. What I think of the essence of post-rock (long build-ups etc.) was included in emo to begin with (Rites of Spring, Moss Icon and others). Only the term 'post-rock' is new.

The term post-rock is older than emo itself and has very little to do with what you consider the essence of post-rock. It's also not too great a term anyway (same with 'post-metal' and other such tags).

Anyway I'm not interested in this discussion (genres, styles and scenes) I just generally find most 'styles' of music generally are better described as scenes so it's not just emo.

omg this heat emirate??

The term post-rock is older than emo itself

The term "post-rock" is believed to have been coined by critic Simon Reynolds in his review of Bark Psychosis' album Hex, published in the March 1994 issue of Mojo magazine.[5]

(wikipedia)

So, no, it's likely to be almost 10 years older than 'emo'.

Anyway, I partly agree with the notion that many contemporary music 'styles' could rather be described as 'scenes', but I don't think this particularly applies to emo. At least when talking about the narrow definition of emo such as found on fourfa.com.

If you read further it was used in 1975 with a different use, which was the point I was making, it's a term that was used for artists like Don Caballero and Mono within a decade of each other; neither are remotely similar.

He tells us that the emo scene is now into music that is stylistically different to that of early-90s emo and he even gives us a description of the sound, post-rock with screamo. Ergo 'emo' is basically a scene more so than a style, since the music described as being emo is stylistically different.

I don't think he's saying that either.
He's even saying that the current emo music (or at least some artists) are sticking to the early-90s emo, while others have polished the post-rockish elements that imo have already been present in emo music in the 80s.

I really don't see how this classifies as 'doing something stylistically different', when it's pretty clear to me that 'emo' was never meant to be exactly this way or another.

Also, you are still to point out how exactly e.g. Mesa Verde are fundamentally stylistically different from let's say Navio Forge.

cutting edge topic

interesting

in 89, when my older brother brought home Fugazi's first 12"
Getting Still life - from angry heads with skyward eyes in the mail in 94. At that time i was ordering from ebulltion all the time. Loads off great records.
Seeing great "newer" bands like off minor, funeral diner, stop it, la quiete.
These where punk/hardcore band refrered to as emo, and has nothing to do with todays mainstream belief of what emo is (like some kid cutting himself or some stupid bad band or whatever)

Fugazi where good(minor threat before them to) emo bands of today arent, there like midway between goth/hipster/boybands just a shit combo if you ask me

i was gonna write an informative response to this but fuck you

Probably my favorite emo song:
Fire Team Charlie - Battle of Marathon

From 2007 btw. Discuss.

With Math-Rock influence, good :)

You think? Especially the focus on bass riffing strikes me as rather oldschool emo.

If you dig this song, check out their whole discography, especially the 10" from 2008.

Sounds like early ATDI.

My favorite emo songs.

The new Kidcrash EP sounds really good on the first listen. I like the darker sound and the more intense vocals, e.g. on "Misogamist".
